New electric ferry praised as 'real step change'

Yahoo23-05-2025

Two-time Olympic sailing champion Iain Perry has said a new electric ferry for the Isle of Wight will be a "real step change".
At a maritime industry event on the Isle of Wight, BBC South was invited onto a smaller, demonstration version of the craft as it made a short journey on the Solent.
The new passenger ferry, with capacity for 150 people, is expected to begin crossings early next year.
Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel, said she hoped the addition to the fleet would help the company move from a 35-minute to a 30-minute timetable.
It comes after criticism from the prime minister, as well as Conservative MP for Isle of Wight East Joe Robertson.
Robertson said passengers had faced "excessive ferry prices and bad services," while Keir Starmer said services for islanders had "simply not been good enough."
Red Funnel had previously apologised for "any inconvenience", and said it had "faced some challenges" and not met its punctuality targets.
Artemis Technologies, run by former Olympian Perry, are the company behind developing the new ferry.
The electric crafts use hydrofoils - underwater wings that lift the vessel's hull out of the water as it moves, which the company claimed reduces drag and increases speed.
"It's halfway between a plane and a boat," said Perry.
"You get to a certain speed and it takes off and flies above the waves," he said. "It's going to be a real step change."
Ms Collins said the new addition to the fleet was taken to help the company meet its decarbonisation targets and provide a faster service.
"As an industry we need to decarbonise, and decarbonisation is something we can't do on our own... we have to do it in partnership," she added.

NBA star Kevin Durant becomes minority shareholder at PSG

According to an official club communiqué, NBA icon Kevin Durant has become a minority shareholder in Paris Saint-Germain. While Durant had previously held an indirect stake in the club through Arctos Partners he has now taken on a direct equity role. Durant, a two-time NBA champion and Olympic gold medallist, is expected to play an active part in PSG's basketball project, which includes plans to launch a professional franchise. The percentage of club ownership remains unchanged for now, as Durant's new role represents a transfer of shares from Arctos to him personally. Advertisement According to a report from The Athletic, QSI revealed that it had been approached about the possibility of launching a basketball franchise in Paris back in March – with the NBA looking to expand into Europe. Adam Crafton reports that the 36-year-old had previously invested a single-digit million share in PSG made via Arctos Sports Partners. This latest deal sees Durant exit the stake acquired via Arctos, with his exit taken up via other money from the fund. 'It is an honour to partner with QSI and be a shareholder in Paris Saint-Germain — a club and a city that is so close to my heart,' said in a communiqué. 'This club has big plans ahead and I can't wait to be a part of the next phase of growth; and to explore new investment opportunities with QSI.' GFFN | George Boxall

Historic HBCU Expands Academic Playbook

Stillman College has long punched above its weight in the world of sports. From Olympic gold medalists to Super Bowl champs, the small HBCU in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, has churned out elite talent on the field and on the sidelines. Now, the Tigers are looking to own the front office, too. Starting in Fall 2025, Stillman College will offer a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management. This new degree program will provide students with a new pathway into coaching, athletic administration, and the multibillion-dollar sports industry. It's the 19th major offered by the institution and one that reflects the growing demand for career-ready HBCU graduates in sports-related fields. "Tuscaloosa is one of the most successful sports cities in Alabama," said Tim Williams, Chair of Stillman's Department of Kinesiology. "Adding a BS in Sport Management is a logical step based on the interests of our students, faculty, and colleagues in athletics." The new major will live at the intersection of academics and athletics. Offered through a collaboration between the School of Education's Department of Kinesiology and the School of Business, the program includes coursework in sport facility management, compliance, policy analysis, and even a deep dive into personal branding and NIL (Name, Image, Likeness)-a nod to the modern realities of college athletics. Stillman is also looking to leverage its local Alabama connections. They plan to offer internships and hands-on experiences through its athletic department and events, such as the 2026 HBCU Athletic Conference Basketball Championships, which Stillman will co-host with Visit Tuscaloosa. Dr. Carol Williams, Dean of the School of Business, said the program is about more than just sports. It's about building opportunities and growing enrollment. "It's been a truly rewarding experience to bring this program to life," she said. "Most inspiring is the promise it holds for expanding academic offerings and driving growth at Stillman College." Stillman joins a growing list of HBCUs stepping into the sports business space. Programs at institutions like Howard University, North Carolina A&T, Winston-Salem State, and Florida A&M are already prepping students for careers in sports law, marketing, analytics, and agency work. Kevin Durant Buys Minority Stake in Champions League's Paris Saint-Germain

NBA star Kevin Durant has purchased a minority stake in Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain, the French soccer club said Friday. Qatar Sports Investments, PSG's majority shareholder, signed an investment and strategic partnership agreement with Durant, the club said in a statement. Financial terms were not disclosed. The announcement comes amid talks between the NBA, FIBA and other entities about the potential of adding a new league in Europe. Durant will provide expertise on the PSG's multi-port strategy, including potential expansion into basketball, the club said. "Under the terms of the partnership, Durant — via his media and investment company Boardroom, co-founded with long-time business partner Rich Kleiman — will acquire a direct minority stake in the club," PSG's statement said. The Phoenix Suns forward is a two-time NBA champion and became the first four-time men's gold medalist in Olympic basketball history when the U.S. took gold at last summer's Paris Games. This also isn't his first soccer venture, as he has a minority stake and consulting agreement with MLS' club, the Philadelphia Union. "It is an honor to partner with QSI and be a shareholder in Paris Saint-Germain — a club and city that is deeply close to my heart," the 36-year-old Durant said in comments provided by PSG. "This club has big plans and I look forward to being part of the next phase of growth and exploring new investment opportunities with QSI." [Related: Kevin Durant Trade: Cases For, Against Rockets, Spurs, More Acquiring Suns Star] As part of the deal, Boardroom Sports Holdings — Durant's personal investment vehicle, which holds stakes in a number of major sports teams and leagues — and QSI will join forces on a wide range of commercial, investment and content production initiatives. PSG added that Durant will support the club's diversification and growth strategy, as well as the club's development in the U.S. and other international markets. "Together with Kevin, we look forward to developing ambitious initiatives that will drive the continued global growth of Paris Saint-Germain and QSI," PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi said.
