
ASOS on the right track with profitability boost despite ongoing sales fall
So, let's look at the numbers. Adjusted group revenue fell 13% to £1.291 billion. But the adjusted gross margin rose to 45.2% from 40.3%. Adjusted EBITDA was £42.5 million, a vast improvement on a £16.3 million loss on that basis a year earlier. But while adjusted EBIT also improved, it was still a negative figure to the tune of £39.6 million compared to an EBIT loss of £98.1 million in the previous year. The adjusted figure before tax was still a loss but narrowed to £69.5 million from £120 million. Net debt also reduced to almost £276 million from just under £349 million.
Those adjusted figures clearly show a definite improvement as do most of the firm's statutory figures. Statutory group revenue was down 14% at £1.299 billion but the gross margin increased from 40% to 45.1%. The statutory operating loss was £210.1 million, a hefty figure but better than the equivalent loss of £246.8 million a year earlier. That's also the case for the loss before tax, which was £241.5 million, narrowing from £270 million.
The company said customers are 'responding well to increased newness and speed to market'. In the UK, its largest market, ASOS Design total sales rose 9% YoY in H1, growing market share, enabled by its 'market-leading Test & React (T&R) and investments into quality'. Globally own-brand full-price sales also returned to YoY growth in H1.
But why did sales continue to fall during the first half? ASOS said that 'in line with guidance, H1 revenues declined 13%, a continuation of FY24 trends, driven by annualising declines in old inventory and optimised performance marketing'.
ASOS also said it made significant progress on key strategic initiatives. It successfully scaled T&R to over 15% of own-brand sales, on track for its 20% full-year target. Flexible Fulfilment (FF) models are now at around 7% of third-party GMV, with major new market and partner launches set for H2. Added brands included Bimba y Lola, Jimmy Fairly and Oh Polly among more than 25 new brand partners in H1, and a further 40 set to launch in H2, as well as more exclusive collections.
It also embedded its new organisational structure in H1, designed to accelerate decision-making and empower a culture of continuous innovation. In H2, initiatives will include launching Topshop.com, the ASOS.WORLD loyalty programme, live shopping features, enhanced search and personalisation, as well as further leveraging AI across the business (including through its AI stylist), and 'addressing causes of unnecessary returns'.
And it said it's improving its US proposition with US customers now accessing a greater product range via UK fulfilment, following changes to its global distribution model. We're told the 'early response has been strong, with double-digit run-rate sales improvement and significantly higher full-price mix'.
From H2, a full hybrid US model will be in operation, including a smaller, more flexible local site and Partner Fulfils rollout. Of course, it continues to 'closely monitor the evolving US tariff outlook and see[s] opportunity to respond as necessary through improved agility and flexibility of our sourcing and distribution model'.
It also reiterated its FY25 profitability guidance. Driven by a significant increase in its full-price sales mix, it continues to expect a gross margin of at least 46% and adjusted EBITDA to increase by at least 60% to £130 million-£150 million.
But for FY25, it expects revenue growth towards the bottom end of the consensus range. Yet the year's GMV growth is expected to be 1-2ppts better than revenue growth.
CEO José Antonio Ramos Calamonte said of all this: 'H1 FY25 is the strongest sign yet that our new commercial model is working. We are driving a significant transformation in profitability, with positive adjusted EBITDA. Customers are responding positively to our focus on full-price sales, speed to market, and quality. Importantly, these successes have been achieved whilst maintaining strong cost control and improving our inventory health. We look forward to a fantastic pipeline of new products, brands and customer experiences, and remain confident in our ability to deliver sustainable, profitable growth.'

EU remains ‘highly vulnerable' and dependent on US defence production
Despite recent efforts to boost European defence production, the bloc remains 'highly vulnerable' and heavily reliant on the United States—particularly for major, high-end defence equipment—according to a new analysis by the Brussels-based economic think tank Bruegel. Trade statistics show that the value of weapons imported to Europe increased from approximately $3.4 billion for the period 2019–2021 to $8.5 billion for 2022–2024 across the 27 member states, with the US leading this increase despite concerns over its capabilities. 'Europe has the industrial production capacities to increase production of tanks and infantry fighting vehicles,' said Guntramm Wolff, Bruegel's senior fellow, during the launch of the report Fit for war by 2030? on Friday morning.* 'What is more concerning is the more modern weapons systems, where we have limited capabilities,' he added. Bruegel and Kiel Institute for the World Economy researchers have detected that the reliance on the US for certain defence and security domains is very high, including hypersonic missiles, next generation jets, AI integrated systems and intelligence services. 'There has been some increase in various systems—artillery in particular has grown substantially—but these increases are still relatively small compared to the overall demand,' Wolff said. For example, the report notes that Europe held 1,627 main battle tanks in 2023, while projections suggest 2,359 to 2,920 will be needed in the coming years, depending on the scenario. As for air defence systems such as the Patriot and SAMP/T, stock levels in 2024 stood at 35 units—far below the 89 required. 'Major investments in research and development will be essential,' the authors advise EU policymakers and national governments, especially given Europe's lagging defence R&D compared to global competitors. In 2023, Europe invested €13 billion in military R&D. By contrast, China invested €21 billion, while the US allocated a staggering $145 billion. In March, the European Commission unveiled its rearmament initiative—now called Defence Readiness 2030—with a target of mobilising up to €800 billion to address the bloc's most critical defence shortfalls. Meanwhile, NATO is expected to call on its 32 members to increase defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2032—or potentially by 2035—a target Spain has already criticised as 'unreasonable'. But simply increasing budgets won't solve the problem, the report warns. 'More military spending will not automatically and immediately translate into military capabilities, especially if the defence industrial base is already under strain,' the researchers argue. The real challenge, they stress, lies in converting funding into tangible capabilities through a coherent, forward-looking strategic and operational plan. With the European defence market still highly fragmented, greater integration would improve cost-effectiveness. But alongside procurement reform, military planning must also be strengthened. 'This is really about rebuilding the ability to understand war through the lens of peer conflict—and that is just as much of a challenge as disbursing the money,' said Dr. Alexandr Burilkov, assistant director for research at the GLOBSEC GeoTech Center. According to the researchers' estimates, even the proposed €800 billion may fall short—insufficient to cover the development of missile capabilities, procurement of tanks, artillery, and infantry fighting vehicles, modernisation of forces, and investment in air defence systems. Russian drones struck the Black Sea port city of Odesa and the northeastern city of Kharkiv overnight, killing at least one person, Ukrainian officials have said. The attacks against Odesa sparked fires in several apartment blocks, Ukraine's Emergency Service said. Flames engulfed a four-storey residential building in the city, which partly collapsed and injured three emergency workers. A separate blaze spread across the upper section of a 23-storey high-rise, leading to the evacuation of 600 residents. In total, one person was killed and 14 others were wounded in the overnight strikes against the port city, according to Odesa's regional prosecutor's office. Europe's lithium quest hampered by China and lack of cash
Even the bloc's broader energy security and climate goals could depend on securing a steady supply of the key mineral, used in batteries and other clean energy supply chains. But Europe has run into a trio of obstacles: lack of money, double-edged regulations and competition from China, analysts told AFP. China has a major head start. It currently produces more than three-quarters of batteries sold worldwide, refines 70 percent of raw lithium and is the world's third-largest extractor behind Australia and Chile, according to 2024 data from the United States Geological Survey. To gain a foothold, Europe has developed a regulatory framework that emphasises environmental preservation, quality job creation and cooperation with local communities. It has also signed bilateral agreements with about 15 countries, including Chile and Argentina, the world's fifth-largest lithium producer. But too often it fails to deliver when it comes to investment, say experts. "I see a lot of memoranda of understanding, but there is a lack of action," Julia Poliscanova, director of electric vehicles at the Transport and Environment (T&E) think tank, told AFP. "More than once, on the day that we signed another MoU, the Chinese were buying an entire mine in the same country." The investment gap is huge: China spent $6 billion on lithium projects abroad from 2020 to 2023, while Europe barely coughed up a billion dollars over the same period, according to data compiled by T&E. Lagging investment At the same time, the bottleneck in supply has tightened: last year saw a 30 percent increase in global demand for lithium, according to a recent report from the International Energy Agency (IEA). "To secure the supply of raw materials, China is actively investing in mines abroad through state-owned companies with political support from the government," the IEA noted. China's Belt and Road Initiative funnelled $21.4 billion into mining beyond its shores in 2024, according to the report. Europe, meanwhile, is "lagging behind in investment levels in these areas", said Sebastian Galarza, founder of the Centre for Sustainable Mobility in Santiago, Chile. "The lack of a clear path for developing Europe's battery and mining industries means that gap will be filled by other actors." In Africa, for example, Chinese demand has propelled Zimbabwe to become the fourth-largest lithium producer in the world. "The Chinese let their money do the talking," said Theo Acheampong, an analyst at the European Council on Foreign Relations. By 2035, all new cars and vans sold in the European Union must produce zero carbon emissions, and EU leaders and industry would like as much as possible of that market share to be sourced locally. Last year, just over 20 percent of new vehicles sold in the bloc were electric. "Currently, only four percent of Chile's lithium goes to Europe," noted Stefan Debruyne, director of external affairs at Chilean private mining company SQM. "The EU has every opportunity to increase its share of the battery industry." Shifting supply chains But Europe's plans to build dozens of battery factories have been hampered by fluctuating consumer demand and competition from Japan (Panasonic), South Korea (LG Energy Solution, Samsung) and, above all, China (CATL, BYD). The key to locking down long-term lithium supply is closer ties in the so-called "lithium triangle" formed by Chile, Argentina and Bolivia, which account for nearly half of the world's reserves, analysts say. To encourage cooperation with these countries, European actors have proposed development pathways that would help establish electric battery production in Latin America. Draft EU regulations would allow Latin America to "reconcile local development with the export of these raw materials, and not fall into a purely extractive cycle", said Juan Vazquez, deputy head for Latin America and the Caribbean at the OECD Development Centre. But it is still unclear whether helping exporting countries develop complete supply chains makes economic sense, or will ultimately tilt in Europe's favour. "What interest do you have as a company in setting up in Chile to produce cathodes, batteries or more sophisticated materials if you don't have a local or regional market to supply?" said Galarza. "Why not just take the lithium, refine it and do everything in China and send the battery back to us?" Pointing to the automotive tradition in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, Galarza suggested an answer. "We must push quickly towards the electrification of transport in the region so we can share in the benefits of the energy transition," he argued. But the road ahead looks long. Electric vehicles were only two percent of new car sales in Mexico and Chile last year, six percent in Brazil and seven percent in Colombia, according to the IEA. The small nation of Costa Rica stood out as the only nation in the region where EVs hit double digits, at 15 percent of new car sales.
