These things won't bother Shanto and me: Mehidy Hasan on taking over as Bangladesh ODI captain

Hans India13-06-2025

Dhaka: Mehidy Hasan Miraz confirmed the recent ODI captaincy shuffle will not affect the former captain Najmul Hossain Shanto or him as they collectively work as a team for the betterment of Bangladesh cricket.
In a surprise and shocking move, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Thursday appointed Miraz as ODI captain for the next 12 months. The 27-year-old will lead the team starting from the upcoming three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka next month, succeeding Shanto who remains Bangladesh Test captain with Miraz appointed as his deputy.
"I don't know how (the captaincy) was decided. It is usually done in a board meeting. Nobody can decide on their own. I think all of us are usually prepared mentally for any situation we may have to face (as far getting axed is concerned)," Mehidy told reporters on Friday.
"He was the ODI captain for a term, which had ended (in the Champions Trophy). They probably had conversations about the Test team. I am not sure if they spoke about the ODI team. Fahim sir (Nazmul Abedin - BCB cricket operation chairman) called me (yesterday) and said that they are going to give me the responsibility and he said that they don't have much time. They have to take a decision quickly. He said that they are planning accordingly."
Miraz shares a strong rapport with Shanto, having played alongside him and also captained him at various age-group levels, including the 2016 U19 World Cup. He believes the opener will have no issues playing under his leadership once again.
"He (Najmul) has been performing well in ODIs but it was the board's decision (to change the captaincy). We may not have fulfilled expectations in terms of team results during this period," he said.
"I don't think it will have an effect on the dressing room (change in captaincy). We are all playing for the country. These things won't bother Shanto and me. I helped him a lot during his captaincy. He will do the same. He will help me. We want to take Bangladesh forward.
"Shanto and I have been playing together since our Under-15s. We spoke about taking Bangladesh forward, it doesn't matter who is the captain. We have to play as a team. Our senior players brought us to a stage, and now we want to take the team further. It is our responsibility. We are going through a bad time but I hope that we can get over it quickly," Miraz added.

"He worked on certain things, credit goes to him...": Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak hails Shubman Gill

Leeds [UK], June 22 (ANI): Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak praised India test skipper Shubman Gill after his majestic hundred on captaincy debut against England on Saturday, in the first of five test match series at Headingley, Leeds. He said Gill had made specific changes in his batting, credited him with analysing what he needed to do, and felt he did really well. Sitanshu Kotak, while speaking in the post-match press conference, said, 'I think, after the Australia series, he [Shubman Gill] has thought of certain things, which he has implemented, after Australia, Champions Trophy, and then we had IPL. He worked on certain things, and as soon as I saw him in the nets, I spoke to him about the changes you made, and he said yes. So a lot of credit goes to him for analysing what he needs to do, and I think he did really well.' India were bowled out for 471 in 113 overs in the first innings, with captain Shubman Gill, vice-captain Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal all crossing the century milestone. Gill scored his century in 140 balls, making him the fifth Indian to have scored a century in his first Test as captain. He was dismissed on 147, trying to hit a six and complete his 150, but he was caught on square leg off Shoaib Bashir. Kotak also praised Pant for his brilliance in the middle. He felt the wicketkeeper/batter makes his decision when he bats and he plays aggressive shots, which does not mean that he can't play defensive cricket. 'Rishabh Pant, I think, is someone who makes his own plans, makes his decision when he bats, so this inning was a little different than you would see him normally, but that is his plan, the way he wanted to approach it, and when he wanted to attack, he did. So, because he plays aggressively, it does not mean that he can't play defensively,' he added. Pant was eventually dismissed on the second ball of the 108th over for 134 by Josh Tongue. India squandered the advantage in the first session on Day 2 as the side lost four wickets in the last half an hour. Shubman Gill (147), Karun Nair (0), Rishabh Pant (134) and Shardul Thakur (1) all lost their wickets. A century by Ollie Pope and his partnership with Ben Duckett helped England put up a strong reply against India in their first innings, ending the final session of day two of the first Test on a high. England earlier made a strong comeback, dismissing India for 471 after the visitors had ended the day yesterday on 359 for three and looked poised for a huge score. At the end of the second day's play, England were 209/3, with Pope (100*) and Harry Brook (0*) unbeaten. They trail by 262 runs. Brief Scores: England: 209/3 (Ollie Pope 100*, Ben Duckett 62, Jasprit Bumrah 3/48) trail India (Shubman Gill 147, Rishabh Pant 134, Ben Stokes 4/66). (ANI)

England put up strong reply to India's 471, Ollie Pope's century steers hosts to 209/3

Leeds [UK], June 22 (ANI): A century by Ollie Pope and his partnership with Ben Duckett helped England put up a strong reply against India in their first innings, ending the final session of day two of the first Test on a high. England earlier made a strong comeback dismissing India for 471 after visitors had ended the day yesterday on 359 for 3 and looked poised for a huge score. At the end of the second day's play, England were 209/3, with Pope (100*) and Harry Brook (0*) unbeaten. They trail by 262 runs. England kickstarted the final session at 107/1, with Duckett (53*) and Pope (48*) unbeaten. Ollie Pope reached his half-century in 64 balls, with eight fours, with the help of a first-ball four by Bumrah. Duckett and Pope tried to assert their dominance over India once again, however, Jasprit Bumrah came in clutch, leaving Duckett's middle-stump pegged back to end a 122-run partnership. Duckett was gone for 62 in 94 balls, with nine fours. England was 126/2. Bumrah also almost got Pope, but Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped him at slips. Root also survived a review by Mohammed Siraj, and England raced to the 150-run mark in 37.2 overs. Pope and Root continued to dominate pacers, taking their side closer to the 200-run mark and bringing up their 50-run mark in 81 balls. England reached the 200-run mark in 45 overs. Pope reached his ninth Test ton and second against India in 125 balls, with 13 fours. Root continued his poor record against Bumrah, falling to him for the 10th time, for 28 in 58 balls with two fours, thanks to a catch by Karun Nair. England was 206/3. Bumrah got Harry Brook dismissed on a no-ball. Brook and Pope made sure England ended the final session without any further damage. Earlier, England ended the second session at 107/1, with Duckett (53*) and Pope (48*) unbeaten. The second session started with India at 454/7, with Ravindra Jadeja joined by Bumrah. However, the pacers did not let India progress much, ending their innings at 471 in 113 overs. Skipper Ben Stokes (4/66) and Josh Tongue (4/86) were the top bowlers for England, while Bashir and Carse got one. Responding to India's first innings total of 471 runs, England lost Zak Crawley (4) early to Bumrah. Following that, Duckett and Pope made a meal out of the pace trio of Bumrah, Siraj and Prasidh, reaching the 50-run mark in 10 overs, with both batters cracking out boundaries. Pope in particular was looking in supreme touch, smashing pacers really well. England reached the 100-run mark in 21.3 overs, playing at almost five runs per over. The duo reached their 100-run partnership within a matter of just 126 balls, playing with an ODI tempo. Even India had some missed opportunities, but luck and lack of execution kept India away from success. Duckett reached his half-century in 68 balls, with eight boundaries, continuing his monstrous run as an opener. The duo made sure England ended session two without another loss of a wicket. India started the first session at 359/3, with Shubman Gill (127*) and Rishabh Pant (65*) unbeaten. The duo of Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse continued proving inefficient as Pant and Gill kept the scoreboard ticking, and there was an air of positivity as they both played with English minds by use of local language to talk about tactics. Pant in particular targetted Carse with some fours. India raced to the 400-run mark in 95.5 overs. Pant treated Shoaib Bashir's spin with disdain, reaching his seventh Test ton in 146 balls, with 10 fours and four sixes. The 209-run stand between Gill, Rishabh ended with the captain being caught by Josh Tongue at deep square leg on a Bashir delivery for 147 in 227 balls, with 19 fours and a six. India was 430/4. From then on, it was a collapse for India as skipper Ben Stokes denied Karun Nair a good outing, removing him for a duck and Tongue trapped Pant leg-before-wicket for 134 in 178 balls, with 12 fours and six sixes. The first session ended with India 454/7, with Stokes getting Shardul Thakur for just one run. India ended the first day at 359/3, with Shubman Gill (127*) and Rishabh Pant (65*) unbeaten. Earlier, a 91-run stand between openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul (42 in 78 balls, with eight fours) and Jaiswal's century (101 in 159 balls, with 16 fours) laid a platform for the captain-vice captain to fire. Brief Scores: England: 209/3 (Ollie Pope 100*, Ben Duckett 62, Jasprit Bumrah 3/48) trail India (Shubman Gill 147, Rishabh Pant 134, Ben Stokes 4/66). (ANI)

Rishabh Pant's innings was different from how he plays normally: Batting coach Kotak

Leeds, Jun 21 (PTI) Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak on Saturday said Rishabh Pant's stroke-filled 134 was different from his usual aggressive knocks, and admitted that India could not get the first-innings score they were looking for against England in the first Test. Pant struck 12 fours and six sixes to make 134 off 178 balls to become the third centurion of India's innings before the visitors collapsed on the second day from 430/3 to 471 all out. England fought back to make 209 for three at stumps, riding on Ollie Pope's unbeaten 100. 'Rishabh Pant is someone who makes his own plans. He decides (the way) and (then) he bats. This innings was a little different than you would see him normally but honestly that is all his plans,' Kotak told the media after the end of the day's play. 'The way he wanted to approach it and when he wanted to attack, he did (and just) because he plays aggressive (cricket) does not mean he cannot play defensive,' Kotak said. Kotak admitted his side suffered a batting collapse but wasn't too flustered about it, with India sill leading by 262 runs. 'It was a bit of a collapse, I would say, because batsmen were also there. From 430 for three to 471 all out, batsmen also got out in it, isn't it? So, it wasn't only the last five; it was a bit of a collapse. We were expecting better than that, but it can happen,' he said. Kotak said a busy calendar in the last few months did not give him a lot of time to work with skipper Shubman Gill, who he thought has worked on certain areas since the end of Australia tour. 'After Australia (tour) he has thought (about) certain things which he implemented,' Kotak said. 'Because after (the) Australia (tour) and England series (followed by) Champions Trophy and then we had IPL, I wouldn't say that I had a lot of time to do things (with Gill).' 'But obviously, he worked on certain things and as soon as I saw him in the nets, I did speak to him that 'you made certain changes' and he said yes. A lot of credit to him for analysing what he needs to do and I think he did it really well,' Kotak said. Kotak dismissed complacency in India's approach given that they ended the first day's play in a commanding position at 359 for three. "I don't think I saw complacency. But I think after 350 for three, you expect to get a big score because that time you are sitting in a comfortable position. I don't think people were satisfied at all,' he said. 'It is just (how) they (England) bowled well and (there were also a) couple of soft dismissals. 'After losing the toss the way we batted it was very good because at Headingley, normally on Day One, a lot of wickets get taken by the bowling side and results also show the same so we batted well on the first day,' he added. In the final minutes of the second day's play, Jasprit Bumrah (3/48) overstepped on a delivery which he had Harry Brook caught at midwicket. 'Normally, it doesn't happen, but it was a bit unfortunate. But I think, as a group of support staff or as a team also, it is one of those things which happen,' he said. 'We have been bowling well, apart from little patches where we (gave away) a few runs. All in all, it was very good and the wicket is also looking good; something (is) happening off the wicket,' he said.
