The Ahmedabad plane crash has shattered several families, leaving them in shock. The families and friends of the victims are still struggling to process the loss and accept that their loved ones will not return. British national Javed Ali Syed, his wife Mariam, and their children Amani and Zayn were among the 241 victims who died after the London-bound AI 171 crashed on 12 June.
Javed, who acquired British citizenship after marrying Mariam, moved to the UK 11 years ago. The family had travelled to Mumbai last week to visit Javed's ailing mother.
'She is suffering from a heart ailment, and moreover, the festival of Eid ul-Adha was scheduled to take place. So Javed came with his family to get her treated and celebrate the festival with us," cousin Saood Memon told the Times of India.
He also added that the couple and their children had hoped to book a flight from Mumbai to London, but unable to secure one, they travelled to Ahmedabad to fly from there, according to the TOI report.

Javed worked as a manager at the Best Western Kensington Olympia Hotel, while his wife, Mariam, was a brand ambassador at Harrods. The bodies of the British family have not yet been recovered.
Imtiyaz, who was in Ahmedabad searching for the bodies of his brother, was deeply shocked by the incident.
Meanwhile, the British High Commission in India has established a reception centre at the Ummed Hotel near Ahmedabad airport to offer support and guidance to the families and friends of British nationals. The victims include 53 British citizens.
According to an official statement, the UK Reception Centre will be open from 9 am to 9 pm daily, starting today. In a post on X, the British High Commission in India stated, 'The UK has set up a Reception Centre in the Ummed Hotel to provide support and advice for the families and friends of British nationals following the plane crash on 12 June. The UK Reception Centre, near Ahmedabad airport, will be open from 09:00 to 21:00 every day, starting today."

DNA confirms AI crew member Nganthoi's identity
Guwahati: The identity of the cabin crew member on the ill-fated Ahmedabad-London Air India flight, Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma of Manipur, has finally been confirmed after a DNA match, her family members said on Saturday. Manipur lost two of its daughters — Nganthoi (20) and Lamnunthem Singson (26) — who were among the crew members aboard the Air India flight that crashed on June 12. Nganthoi's sister Gitanjali told TOI from Ahmedabad on Saturday that the authorities have confirmed her identity among the deceased in the Air India flight crash. "DNA of my sister has matched with our family. We have got the confirmation today after a long wait," said Gitanjali. One of Nganthoi's family members said they are expecting to bring her mortal remains to Imphal on Sunday. It was a patient wait of more than a week by the family members of Nganthoi, a Meitei girl, for the confirmation of her mortal remains through DNA match. Gitanjali and a few of her family members have been camping in Ahmedabad since June 13. "Air India is arranging our return to Imphal with Nganthoi's mortal remains. We are not sure in which flight we are coming. It may be through a connecting flight to Imphal," the family member said.

Auto driver sentenced to life imprisonment for dowry death
Bengaluru: The stable statements from witnesses, police investigation, and circumstantial evidence corroborated helped in clinching life imprisonment for a 30-year-old auto driver, facing charges of abetting the suicide of his wife, a homemaker through dowry harassment. The convict is Anil N alias Anil Kumar of Maralawadi Town in Kanakapura. Harohalli police had arrested Anil in May 2020 after his wife, R Ashwini, 23, died by suicide. A mother of three children, including a special child, Ashwini married her long-time friend Anil Kumar despite her family's opposition. However, Anil started harassing Ashwini for dowry. He was also accused of having an affair with another woman. Anil was beating up Ashwini regularly over trivial issues. Depressed over his harassment, Ashwini hung herself inside her house on May 14, 2020. The previous night, Ashwini's neighbours had called her parents, saying Anil was badly beating her over dowry issues. Ashwini's father, Rajanna, a farmer, filed a complaint, stating: "Already we gave the couple over 70 grams of gold ornaments. Still, Anil was beating her up for more dowry." Harohalli cops arrested Anil after booking him under the IPC section 304B (dowry death). While submitting the chargesheet to court, police added statements from individuals who had, on many occasions, advised Anil not to ill-treat Ashwini and beat her up for dowry. Public prosecutor MK Roopalakshmi told TOI that the chargesheet witnesses, who had seen Ashwini's ordeals, stood firm during the trial. "Ashwini's parents, her neighbours, and others made statements during the entire trial. Also, the circumstantial evidence mentioned by the police during investigation played a vital role in convicting Anil," she said. Another police officer said they explained to the court how Anil neglected his three children after Ashwini's death. "The children are looked after by Ashwini's parents. Not even one day did Anil visit them or enquired about them. This matter was brought to the court's notice to explain Anil's attitude," he said. Anil, who was out on bail, was present in the court when Judge Kumar HN from additional district and sessions court, Ramanagar, passed the orders. Also, the court slapped a fine of Rs 35,000. Anil is shifted to the district prison.

Ludhiana: Roadways conductor ‘thrashed' by pvt operators; union halts buses
Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at the Ludhiana interstate bus stand on Saturday after contractual workers of the Punjab Roadways abruptly halted bus services for nearly an hour from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm. The shutdown was prompted in protest against police 'inaction' over an alleged assault on a Roadways conductor — Surendra Kumar — by private bus staff on the bus stand premises. The sudden disruption triggered traffic chaos outside the bus stand as several buses got stuck in a haphazard manner at the terminal and on adjoining roads, hampering the regular flow of traffic. Shamsher Singh Dhillon, state general secretary of the Punjab Roadways, Punbus and PRTC Contractual Workers' Union, said, 'On Friday night, some private bus staff heading to Delhi assaulted Punjab Roadways conductor Surendra Kumar who was on duty in a Ferozepur depot bus going to Chandigarh.' 'When the bus halted at Ludhiana bus stand at around 9.30 pm, a migrant family, unfamiliar with the city, asked conductor Surendra Kumar for help in boarding a bus as they had to go to Bareilly. While he was assisting them, staff of a private bus tried to forcefully take the family into their Delhi-bound bus. When Kumar resisted, they misbehaved with him and then brutally assaulted him,' he said. A written complaint was submitted to the police station at the bus stand, but the authorities failed to take timely action, Dhillon said, adding that the bus operations were halted at around 2.30 pm on Saturday. Subhash Chandra, in-charge of the bus stand police post, said, 'We received a formal complaint and have summoned both parties. The matter has now been resolved mutually.' When contacted, Navraj Batish, general manager of Punjab Roadways, stated, 'The shutdown took place without any prior notice, despite the police already investigating the issue. Such sudden disruptions cause heavy losses to the government. Whoever is responsible must bear the consequences.' The protest caught daily commuters off guard, leaving many stranded without any alternatives. Shanvi Verma, a CA aspirant from Jagraon, said, 'I travel to Ludhiana daily for my coaching classes. When I reached the bus stand after finishing my classes, I found out that the buses were not operating. I feel stuck with no transport in sight.' Echoing similar sentiments, Harjinder Gill, a commuter heading to Bathinda, said, 'My uncle is hospitalised and I had taken a half-day leave to visit him. My family is alone there. It is absurd that common people like us are forced to bear such inconveniences without any fault.'
