Man hides from police in retention pond after he ‘went to get a soda'
A man was arrested by police in a retention pond on Friday morning.

Around 430p.m., officers were checking on a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the WestSpring Inn in Westlake, CBS-affiliate WOIO reported.
They saw a man driving around and stopped to talk with him.
He told officers he was staying at the hotel.

He stepped away from the officers, saying that he was going to 'get a soda' from the front desk area.
Officers learned the man had a felony warrant.
A person at the hotel told officers that the man had run across the roadway into a nearby wooded area.
The man, who was found partially submerged in the retention pond with his hands under the water, was taken into custody.
The man was charged with failure to comply and resisting arrest.

Hours long standoff in northern Colorado ends, suspect in custody
Police in northern Colorado have taken a suspect into custody after a standoff that lasted several hours Saturday afternoon. According to the Loveland Police Department, officers closed Boise Avenue in both directions near Silverleaf Drive due to an incident near Shadow Court around 2:26 p.m. Authorities said the suspect was "contained" inside the home but asked residents to remain inside while officers and SWAT members tried to resolve the situation. The police department has not released information on what led up to the standoff.

Maxwell Frost: ICE ‘human trafficking' migrants to other nations
Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost (D) criticized the Trump administration for their deportation policies following national protests regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and removals. 'There is no legal process for people,' Frost said during a Thursday appearance on CBS' 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.' 'We have ICE federal agents pulling up, terrorizing our communities, hopping out of unmarked vans, stealing and yes, kidnapping people, not giving them their day in court and yes, human trafficking them to other nations, other countries around the entire world,' he added. His comments follow mass Los Angeles protests regarding ICE's detainment of 44 individuals. Local lawmakers said detention centers were overflowing with immigrants who have not been given a court date while arrests increase, leaving those in custody to sleep outside in tents. Earlier this week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said drivers in the state would not be held liable if they hit protesters blocking roadways. President Trump's border czar Tom Homan has also issued stronger deportation policies pledging to crack down on 'worksite enforcement' on Thursday and detaining illegal immigrants while on the job. The Trump administration also resumed immigration efforts at farms and hotels this week after previously pausing operations due to business owners' concerns about staffing shortages. Federal judges have recently blocked the White House's efforts to remove immigrants to places outside of their country of origin including Libya and Saudi Arabia. Frost said immigration efforts are now 'outside the bounds of the law' and fall well beyond the scope of mass deportation as the president promoted on the 2024 campaign trail. 'Due process is something that applies to every person in this country, regardless of your status,' the Florida lawmaker said. 'So this is from the party that likes to talk a lot about the American exceptionalism, but they want to rip away the few things that make our country actually exceptional. And part of that is the fact that our rights are for everybody,' he added.

Crematory shut down after whistleblowers blow lid on disturbing practices
Illinois officials permanently shut down a Chicago-based crematory on Thursday after whistleblowers flagged the disturbing way the bodies were handled, including human remains that were stuffed in broken coolers. The Heights Crematory saw its licenses revoked following a months-long investigation alleging gross malpractice at the suburban funeral home, where at least 19 bodies were found inside a broken refrigerated trailer in February, according to State Comptroller Susana Mendoza. 'The practical effect of this order is that Heights and its owners will never operate a crematorium in the state of Illinois again,' Mendoza said in a statement. 4 The Heights Crematory was permanently shutdown on Thursday, with its operators losing their license. Google Maps 4 Illinois investigators found more than two dozen bodies had been improperly stored and handled in the crematory. CBS Issues at the crematory became public after whistleblowers spoke to a local CBS News crew earlier this year, accusing the business of improperly handling the bodies they were supposed to be taking care of. Along with the bodies stored in broken refrigerated units, investigators found another group of six to seven corpses that were thrown on top of each other on the main floor of the crematory as they waited to be burned. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office also said it received more than 500 boxes of ashes from Heights Crematory that had never made it to the families of the deceased. During the initial investigation, Mendoza said she was 'appalled, disgusted, and deeply saddened by the disrespect Heights Crematory showed to the remains of the deceased.' 4 Bodies were found stacked up on each other on the main floor of the business. CBS 'When I saw these pictures, I felt that our dog got a more dignified treatment in death than these people did?' Mendoza told reporters back in March. 'These are people. They're people's loved ones, family members. And to see anyone treated in that disrespectful, undignified manner in death was disgusting to me,' she added. The Heights Crematory was temporarily shut down, with its owners expected to attend a hearing on June 24 to learn the fate of their business. 4 Illinois State Comptroller Susana Mendoza said she was disgusted by what investigators found at the crematory. CBS The hearing, however, has now been canceled following the comptroller's order to keep the crematory shuttered. The State of Illinois has never shut down a crematory in such a manner before, but Mendoza told CBS it needed to happen due to what the investigation turned up. Representatives for the Heights Crematory could not be immediately reached for comment.
