Sporting pioneer honoured with Welsh sporting accolade

A Pembrokeshire sporting pioneer has been honoured with one of the highest accolades in Welsh sport.
Matthew Evans, founder of the Long Course Weekend and co-founder of Ironman Wales, was officially inducted into the Wales Sports Hall of Fame.

He was also presented with the Lord Brooke Award for Outstanding Contribution to Welsh Sport during the ceremony at St Brides Hotel in Saundersfoot.
Mr Evans said: "To be inducted into the Wales Sports Hall of Fame with the Lord Brooke Award is truly humbling."
He began this journey in 2010 with the first Long Course Weekend, with Ironman Wales starting in 2011.
Mr Evans added: "Since then, we've developed world-class sporting events across Wales and around the globe — a journey made possible only through the support of an incredible team."
The award recognises the broad impact of Mr Evans' work on Welsh sport, tourism, and the nation's global reputation.

His events have generated millions in economic benefits, drawn thousands of visitors to Wales, and helped position the country as a leader in endurance sport.
Mr Evans said: "From a government that understood the vision, to a county that helped with the hard yards, to communities that came together to deliver a world-class visitor experience – and a team that disrupted the market and created something truly Welsh and world-class – this has always been about collective belief and effort."
The Long Course Weekend has grown into one of Wales's top sporting exports, with versions now held in New Zealand, Australia, Belgium, Maastricht, Mallorca, Holland, and Yorkshire.
Mr Evans has also developed a legacy programme for children, a volunteer scheme, and business partnerships that support host communities and promote long-term growth.

He said: "A heartfelt thank you to the athletes who've supported us so loyally over the years – and to their loved ones who party, cheer, and make our red-carpet finishes famous across the world.
"Your passion brings our events to life."
He finished his remarks by acknowledging a lifelong friend.
He said: "A final shout out to Scott Powell, who's been there since we were 16 years old – front row at Llandovery College – and still by my side today (although thankfully, he doesn't drop the ball anymore).
"This one's for us both, for the team, for the county, and for everyone at Major Events in Welsh Government."

Rams WR Davante Adams could move up these all-time NFL lists
Los Angeles Rams receiver Davante Adams heads into his 12th NFL season as one of the best players at his position. He's caught 957 receptions for 11,844 yards and 103 touchdowns in 164 career games. Adams will undoubtable add to those totals in L.A. with Matthew Stafford as his quarterback, even with Puka Nacua alongside him. Sean McVay loves his receivers and Adams might be the best one he's ever coached. It would certainly explain the coach's aggressive pursuit of Adams this offseason. Heading into the 2025 season, Adams ranks 20th in receptions, 33rd in receiving yards and 10th in receiving touchdowns. If he reaches his season-long averages, Adams will move up in all three categories. How far, though, remains up to him and the Rams. Adams needs just 14 receptions to move into 19th place ahead of Brandon Marshall. That seems like a lock unless Adams gets injured very early in the season. Adams also needs just 43 to break 1,000 career receptions, which only 15 other receivers have done. If Adams reaches his 89-catch average, though, he could rise to as high as No. 12 — Andre Johnson. And if Adams sets a career-high mark of at least 123 receptions (which he last did in 2020), he could push to as high as No. 8 ahead of Terrell Owens' 1078 receptions. Three active players who could shake up where Adams lands at the end of the season in career receptions: Keenan Allen (No. 18, 974), DeAndre Hopkins (No. 16, 984) and Travis Kelce (No. 14, 1004). All three are ahead of Adams and only Allen isn't on a roster at the moment. Adams can make a big leap in the all-time receiving yards record book. His 11,844 yards rank No. 33 in NFL history, and if he breaks his 1,077-yard seasonal average for his career, Adams would move up to No. 22. However, he'd once again be contending with Hopkins, who sits at No. 21 at 12,965. The other two active players on the list (Kelce at No. 28 and Mike Evans at No. 24) are less than 1,000 yards ahead of him, but would need very poor seasons to drop. The final major stat Adams could move up on the all-time list is receiving touchdowns. His 103 ranks No. 10 in league history, but there isn't a lot of room for improvement on that spot in 2025. Evans sits two touchdowns ahead of Adams at No. 9 with 105, while Tony Gonzalez's 111 career scores is No. 8. Adams averages nine touchdowns per season, meaning the highest he could climb is No. 8 if he can outpace Evans by at least two touchdowns. Adams would need 13 scores to move to No. 7, ahead of Antonio Games. He's only done that once in his career (2020 with the Packers). There is a lot of opportunity for Adams to eat in his Rams offense. And while the ultimate goal is a Super Bowl, moving up some record books is a nice consolation prize for the legendary pass-catcher.

Canine cowabunga: Repeat surf dog champions crowned in Huntington Beach
Petey the Surf Dog caught a long wave early in the small dog finals of the Purina Pure Plan Incredible Dog Challenge Western Regional competition on Friday morning. The 6-year-old West Highland white terrier from Huntington Beach rode it all the way in toward the shore, earning plenty of points. Petey's trainer, Kay DeLoach, marveled at the ride after the competition. 'He seems to adjust his balance so he doesn't fall off,' DeLoach said. 'It's amazing to watch.' Petey proved up to the challenge yet again at Huntington State Beach. He won the small dog competition at the 28th annual event for the second straight year, topping a terrier mix from Long Beach named Carson in the championship heat. Koa, an 11-year-old female Labrador from Carlsbad, was also a repeat winner in the large dog competition at the event, held between Brookhurst Street and Lifeguard Tower 2. Koa edged Charlie, a yellow Labrador from El Cajon, in the final heat. Petey racked up the points even in low tide conditions, advancing to the final after a 10-minute preliminary heat. 'It was hard,' said DeLoach, who oversees Westie Rescue of Orange County. 'I was definitely nervous. Somebody asked me how do you feel when they take him out like that, and I said, 'panic.'' But he proved up to the challenge. DeLoach, who has lived in Surf City for about 25 years, said it was very exciting to repeat in a home competition. Koa's trainer, Kristina Welsh, raised her arms in victory after the final results of the large dog competition were announced. Koa was actually racing against her husband in the last heat — Welsh said that the trainers staged a wedding between Koa and Charlie last year. Derby, a retired surf dog also from the San Diego area, served as officiant. 'Hopefully Charlie doesn't divorce her,' said Welsh, smiling, after the competition. 'I'm honored, I really am. I really wanted this for her, because this is just something that she loves so much.' Welsh said that with Koa advancing in age, she wasn't sure if she would be back competing in Huntington Beach again next year. She gave a shout out to the knowledgeable lifeguards assisting with the competition, for helping Koa get on some really nice waves. 'Dogs have so much more than being a house dog, you know,' Welsh said. 'She has found her passion, and we can share that with people. People can see her athletic abilities, but also just the fact that she's like every other kid that wants to go out surfing. There's no difference. She wants to spend her day surfing just like a typical Southern California kid. It's the cutest thing in the world.' Dan Nykolayko from Newport Beach did not quite see his 2-year-old French bulldog Rocket advance to the small dog finals. Nykolayko formerly trained Cherie, another now-retired champion French bulldog. 'She's at home, mad,' said Nykolayko, smiling, sensing a bit of jealously. 'She's been barking at us.' The Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Huntington State Beach, between Beach Boulevard and Newland Street. Dogs will try their skills in agility, diving dog, freestyle flying disc, fetch it and weave competitions. The event is free and open to the public.

Wrexham sign Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie on three-year contract
Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie has become the first summer signing of ambitious newly-promoted Championship club Wrexham for an undisclosed fee. Hardie had 12 months remaining on his contract at Argyle and Plymouth Live understands that he was offered a new improved one by the Pilgrims but Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, came up with a deal which was worth more than that. Advertisement Sky Sports News reporter Anthony Joseph posted on X (Twitter) tonight that it was understood Wrexham had paid in the region of £700,000 for Hardie, whose release clause in his contract was reduced after Argyle's relegation from the Championship. "The last couple of seasons, it's been good getting experience in the EFL Championship and it's experience I can lean on now. I've enjoyed playing there, and I've managed to score a few goals, so hopefully that can continue this season. 'I love how family-oriented the club is, the community is all together and it really is a one-club city. Everything is to do with the football, and I'm really excited to be a part of that – I'll give everything I've got for the badge.' Advertisement The move to Wrexham means Hardie can continue to play in the Championship following Argyle's relegation to League One and given the high profile of the north Wales club it could boost his chances of a first Scotland call-up. Hardie leaves Argyle in joint 12th position in the club's all-time scoring list with 74 goals from a total of 174 starts and 74 substitute appearances since first joining from Blackpool in January 2020. That was the first of two loan stints for the former Glasgow Rangers striker before he completed a permanent transfer to the Pilgrims early in 2021. Hardie was Argyle's top scorer last season with 12 goals in all competitions, one more than Mustapha Bundu, who is out of contract at the end of this month and has rejected the offer of a new deal.
