Our Guy in Vietnam, review: Martin is wasted on this feather-light tourist stuff

Telegraph01-06-2025

There is no one else like Guy Martin on British television. And there is no one else who can do what he does. So, to be blunt, why have Channel 4 sent him to undertake a job that Sue Perkins could do?
Our Guy in Vietnam (Channel 4), a two-part series to mark 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War, is not the usual Guy Martin gig – a daredevil challenge or an engineering geek's adventure – it is a bog-standard travelogue. 'We're in full tourist mode here,' says Martin. Yep. 'We don't normally do tourist things.' You do now, Guy.
'Yeah, Vietnam,' says Martin at the top of the programme, as if the audience had just shouted 'Vietnam?' at seeing the programme title. He's here, he says, because he's keen to get to the bottom of this 'Communism job' and we are treated to some GCSE-level potted history about Ho Chi Minh, the French occupation and central planning. The programme leans gently into Martin's strengths – vehicles, engineering, war history – and, as you witness him trying to pull a wheelie on a motorbike and sidecar, create some homemade napalm, zip down the Ho Chi Minh trail on a dirt bike, and detonate an unexploded cluster bomb, it feels like you are watching someone on a stag-do itinerary put together by a blokey amateur-history enthusiast. Even his patter is war-buffs-down-the-pub: 'It's not a point of debate. Vietnam won the war. Simple.'
Yet there was nothing here that Sue Perkins wouldn't do – tai chi down the park, hawking at a floating market, riding an overladen moped – and even the segments that should hold some weight, such as speaking to a man who was born with deformities because of Agent Orange, are gossamer-thin and over in the blink of an eye.
Some moments are just plain daft. 'Bus travel is quite a common form of travel in Vietnam,' says Martin. The voice-over teems with inane generalisations about the country ('The Vietnamese admire wealth') and some moments plumb depths of meaninglessness that even Inside the Factory and Gregg Wallace would fear. An electronic-vehicle factory site is, we're told, 'twice the size of Monaco'. We're not told how big Monaco is (about half the size of Central Park, since you ask).
It is arguably Martin's first misstep since he roared onto our screens in a cloud of exhaust fumes many years ago, and if the programme has merit, it's simply in spending time with him. There is something undeniably charming about watching a mechanic from Grimsby pottering about Hanoi, calling everyone 'duck' or 'big man', but Martin is wasted on this feather-light tourist stuff.
Occasionally, we get a glimpse of his unique appeal, such as when he notices that the thousands of lights in a gaudy temple are 'filament not LED' and frets about the cost, or when he visits Hanoi's famous Train Street and brings a tape measure so he can find out the track gauge. Martin has an idiosyncratic view of the world; Our Guy in Vietnam had everyone else's.

Stephanie Davis' tragic love life as ex dumps her months after giving birth

Hollyoaks star Stephanie Davis played Sinead O'Connor in the Channel 4 soap and has had her fair share of headline-hitting relationships - including a fling with Zayn Malik Actress Stephanie Davis has been left completely heartbroken, again. The 32-year-old who found fame on Channel 4's Hollyoaks confirmed over the weekend that her partner, Joe McKalroy, had dumped her – just months after she gave birth. It came following weeks of speculation surrounding their romance after Stephanie had shared a Father's Day message which didn't include Joe, with whom she shares her young son, Samuel. Stephanie welcomed her son in January this year and told fans she couldn't process the news. While Stephanie is known for her dramatic performances on screen, her off-screen love life has also frequently made headlines. From alleged infidelity in the Big Brother House to liaisons with co-stars and a romance with a boy band superstar, here's a full rundown of Stephanie's tumultuous love life. Joe McKalroy Stpanie found love in 2022 and appeared happily in love with Yorkshire lad Joe, whom she had called the "love of her life". But following weeks of speculation, she confirmed on Sunday that she and Joe had split. In an Instagram Stories post, she wrote: "Never in a million years did I think I'd be writing this. I've been left with no choice but to address the rumours." She continued: "This has come as a complete shock and has been an incredibly painful and unexpected time. Just four months after having a baby - one of the most vulnerable and emotional times in a woman's life - I've found myself facing this chapter on my own." Hinting at her past troubled romance with reality star Jeremy McConnell, with whom she shared a seven-year-old son, she went on: "After everything I've been through in the past, I truly believed I'd finally found my happiness - something secure and lasting. But that, heartbreakingly, hasn't been the case." Stephanie went on to write: "I'm grateful for the years we had because without us, I wouldn't have my Samuel. Who will always be my priority." And she concluded: "Right now, I'm focusing on healing, protecting my peace, and doing the best I can - being there for my two beautiful boys. Thank you to those who've reached out - your kindness has meant more than I can say. Stephanie X." Stephanie gave birth to young Samuel earlier this year and revealed to fans that she almost lost her son during "the worst pregnancy." Oliver Tasker Before finding love with her now ex-partner Joe, Stephanie was in a six-month relationship with bike shop worker Oliver. Oliver works as a buyer for Formby Cycles in Liverpool - a biking superstore owned by his parents. He began dating Stephanie at the start of summer 2021, but the couple called it quits in September that year, mere weeks after she disclosed a heartbreaking miscarriage. A source mentioned at the time that 'issues with trust' played a part, stating: "They had a great six months together, but Steph respects herself too much to feel like she should stay in a relationship that isn't working." Owen Warner Before her fling with Oliver, Stephanie was linked to Hollyoaks co-star Owen Warner, famous for his role as Romeo Nightingale on the hit Channel 4 soap. The former flames shared nine months together, moved in, and were even believed to be engaged at one point. However, the 23-year-old Owen allegedly confided to friends that he felt 'suffocated' by the relationship, which single mum Stephanie was reportedly pushing forward at '100 miles an hour'. Steph previously disclosed that their bond had grown so intense that her son Caben, whom she had with ex-partner Jeremy McConnell, started calling Owen "daddy". In September 2019, the Mirror exclusively revealed that Stephanie and Owen had parted ways. One insider revealed to the Mirror back then that Stephanie went ballistic after he swapped out his profile images on social media for ones sans her and blocked her. The insider further divulged: "It was all a bit too much for him, and him being the age he is, found it very difficult to breathe. It was all very suffocating." Owen has since been romantically involved with Love Island's Lana Jenkins and is now with Jemma Donovan, daughter of Jason Donovan, who made her Hollyoaks debut earlier this year. Jacob Gill Stephanie's name was linked to 'party animal' Jacob Gill in 2017, sparking rumours that the two were even engaged. However, a mate later spoke to the Mirror, claiming the romance was merely a 'fauxmance' concocted to get back at Stephanie's prior flame Jeremy McConnell. ‌ "This is all for Jeremy's benefit. All the posts that started appearing from her regarding Caben and his birthday are also to get a reaction from him," they divulged. The fling between the couple reportedly fizzled out by January 2018. Jeremy McConnell Stephanie had an incredibly tough time with her ex, Jeremy McConnell. Their love story unfolded in the full glare of the public eye, beginning on the Celebrity Big Brother set, where the flames of their on-again-off-again romance were first ignited, leaving fans reeling until their explosive last row. ‌ Even before they took their relationship public post-CBB, Jeremy faced cheating allegations the night prior to the CBB finale, despite her still being inside the house, which he vehemently refuted. Their time together was plagued with further infidelity whispers, and by just two months in, there were signs the relationship had turned violent. Allegations flew that during a holiday to Cape Verde, where it's believed their son Caben was conceived in April 2016, they wrecked a hotel room together. Upon learning she was expecting, Stephanie said Jeremy abandoned her, refusing her calls and persisting in his denial of the child's paternity right up until Caben arrived in January 2017. It was only after a DNA test confirmed his paternity that he accepted responsibility, though it remains uncertain whether he has contact with Caben following his conviction for assaulting Stephanie in March 2016, leaving her bruised and battered. ‌ A year later, Jeremy was found guilty of a horrific attack on Stephanie at her Liverpool home while she cradled their eight-week-old son. Stephanie disclosed that the stress had caused her to miscarry what would have been their second child together. In November 2019, Jeremy became a father again when his girlfriend Katie McCreath gave birth to their daughter, Storm. Sam Reece ‌ Before entering the Big Brother house in 2016, Stephanie was dating Manchester model Sam Reece. Despite her claims of intending to marry Sam, she cheated on him on national television by starting a relationship with Jeremy McConnell. Sam watched from outside as Steph and Jez's relationship deepened - they are even rumoured to have been intimate in the reality show house. Since then, Sam has appeared on Ex On The Beach and landed a role in Emmerdale. Zayn Malik ‌ Stephanie has also been linked to former One Direction member Zayn Malik, revealing that she ended things with him because he was seeing Perrie Edwards. She recounted their past, saying: "We dated for five months in 2011, just before he started seeing Perrie. We actually broke up because I found out he had been meeting up with Perrie. "It was just one of those things. Zayn is a good lad really, I don't have anything bad to say about him." Zayn's relationship with Perrie eventually ended, and he later became involved with American model Gigi Hadid. The couple welcomed their daughter Khai four years ago but have since parted ways.

Blankety Blank viewers jeer 'someone's getting fired' as Naga Munchetty makes show debut - complaining 'I can't believe they put her on' amid BBC Breakfast bullying probe

Naga Munchetty made her first appearance on Blankety Blank amid the BBC Breakfast bullying probe. The news presenter featured on Saturday's instalment of the iconic game show, hosted by Bradley Walsh. Other guests included Great British Bake Off star Sue Perkins, This Morning's Dermot O'Leary, Iain Stirling, Paralympian Ellie Simmonds and Layton Williams. However, many viewers were focused on Naga, as her Blankety Blank debut comes as she finds herself reportedly accused of bullying a member of staff, according to The Sun, and allegedly was spoken to by bosses over a sex jibe she made while off-air at BBC Radio 5 Live. Naga's representatives have been approached for comment and it is unclear whether she will rebut the claims in The Sun. BBC Breakfast is also reportedly undergoing a bullying probe which was launched into BBC Breakfast, with much of the upset centred around its editor Richard Frediani. Watchers took to social media to share their thoughts and one posted on X: 'Naga Munchetty on Blankety Blank after the headlines she's been making someone at the bbc will get fired for that #bbc #blanketyblank.' Someone else added: 'Naga hasn't been cancelled yet then #blanketyblank.' 'Bad timing to feature Naga #BlanketyBlank,' one viewer said, followed by a laughing face emoji. While according to the Express, another penned: 'Corrr, can't believe they put Naga on Blankety Blank after this week. Bit bad timing init?' According to The Sun, Naga used a slang term for a sex act during an off-air break. The alleged remark in 2022 was said to have stunned the studio and led to Naga being spoken to by bosses. It was then reported that on BBC Breakfast last year, Naga was spoken to over alleged bullying of a woman. The BBC are now reportedly facing questions over whether there are 'double standards'. However, many viewers were focused on Naga, as her Blankety Blank debut comes as she finds herself reportedly accused of bullying a member of staff, according to The Sun , and allegedly was spoken to by bosses over a sex jibe she made while off-air at BBC Radio 5 Live When contacted by MailOnline, a BBC spokesperson said: 'While we do not comment on individual cases, we take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously.' MailOnline previously contacted a representative for Naga Munchetty for comment. While in April, MailOnline exclusively revealed some staff had expressed unhappiness with the show's bullish editor Richard Frediani, accusing him of being on occasion 'aggressive' and 'belittling' towards his underlings. Meanwhile, it's being claimed by The Sun that tensions between two of Breakfast's hosts, Naga and Charlie, are threatening to explode, due to their opposing views behind the scenes. It's thought that the show's staff are feeling increasingly 'uneasy' around boss Frediani if they are not a person he favours, and host Naga is reportedly 'at her wits end' over the tensions. Sources also claim that Frediani feels he is 'untouchable' after the show scooped a BAFTA Television Award in May. It's also being claimed that some staff avoid being left alone with him following an allegation last year that he physically shook a lower-ranking female editor, with the complaint upheld following a BBC investigation. A source said: 'The probe into Fredi's bullying is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to BBC Breakfast. 'In reality, the smiles on the red sofa mask growing tension and an increasingly toxic culture, driven from the top down, with its unwitting presenters at the heart. 'Naga is incredibly approachable and friendly to everyone on set. Charlie is very professional and tries to disengage from any politics. But some stars, like Sally Nugent, are loved by Fredi, whereas others, like Naga and Charlie, are not. 'Frankly, he can be mildly terrifying if you're on the wrong side of him.' The source went onto claim that some younger staff are choosing to 'keep their heads down and weather the storm' due to fears for their jobs. A BBC spokesperson told the publication: 'While we do not comment on individual cases, we take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously and will not tolerate behaviour that is not in line with our values. 'We have robust processes in place and would encourage any staff with concerns to raise them directly with us so they can be addressed.' Blankety Blank airs on BBC One every Saturday at 8pm and is available to stream on iPlayer.

The episode in question will air on E4 on at 7pm. Bloodthirsty Jez Blake (Jeremy Sheffield) has struck again, claiming the life of Ian, a social worker who he believed knew way too much. The crazed killer, as viewers know, has thus far killed Dilly Harcourt (Emma Johnsey-Smith) and Abe Fielding (Tyler Conti) since rocking up in the village. His murder spree, however, dates back decades, with the twisted gardener keeping track of all his victims' names in a notebook which he keeps close. An unexpected turn of events last week confirmed that one of those victims was none other than Dennis Savage (Joe Tracini), whose disappearance Dodger (Danny Mac) is investigating, unaware the culprit is much closer to home. In a bid to get answers, Dodger met with Tori's social worker Ian, who confirmed that a member of the Blake clan was harassing Dennis prior to his vanishing. That person was none other than Jez, who watched the secret meeting from afar, spooking Ian, who swiftly made tracks. However, as he got back to his car, he was confronted by Jez in an alley way, who proceeded to murder him. Feeling a rush as he did so, Jez returned to the flat and informed Martha (Sherrie Hewson), who was less than pleased to learn that he had shed more blood.
