Could China help broker a ceasefire between Iran and Israel?
China is expected to play an 'active' role in trying to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, but analysts warned there may be limits to what it could achieve.
The two countries
traded strikes for a fifth straight day on Tuesday , as China warned its citizens to leave both countries as 'soon as possible' because of the 'severe' security situation.
President Xi Jinping, speaking during a visit to Kazakhstan for a summit with Central Asian countries, called on all parties to work to de-escalate the conflict as soon as possible, saying: 'China stands ready to work with all parties to play a constructive role in restoring peace and stability in the Middle East.'
Over the weekend, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke to his Iranian and Israeli counterparts, Abbas Araghchi and Gideon Saar.
He condemned Israel's attack as an 'unacceptable' breach of international law but also said Beijing was ready to play a 'constructive' role in helping the two sides resolve their differences.
The Beijing-backed security group the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation – which Tehran joined as a full member in 2023 – has also 'strongly condemned' Israel's strikes on Iran and called for a settlement 'exclusively through peaceful, political and diplomatic means'.

Pakistan gets caught in Iran-Israel disinformation crossfire
Pakistan , still on high alert after last month's brief aerial clash with India, now finds itself swept into the digital maelstrom of disinformation accompanying the escalating hostilities between neighbouring Iran and Israel. Advertisement Determined to distance itself from the turmoil unfolding just across its southwestern frontier, Islamabad has offered moral support to Tehran by publicly criticising Israel , while simultaneously backing diplomatic efforts to revive a nuclear deal between Iran and the United States But the disinformation war has found fertile ground in the country. In the hours after Israel's strike on Iran on June 13, a flurry of AI-manipulated videos surfaced on social media, each seemingly crafted to paint Pakistan as Iran 's willing accomplice. One doctored clip appeared to show Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif claiming that Islamabad had tipped off Tehran about Israel's surprise assault – an attack that came just two days before Iranian and US negotiators were set to meet in Oman. Another falsified video featured Mohsen Rezaei, a former commander-in-chief of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, asserting that Pakistan had pledged to launch nuclear weapons against Israel if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 's government ever used them against Iran. US President Donald Trump speaks as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu waves following a meeting at the White House in April. Why US aircraft carrier's voyage to Middle East is causing ripples around Taiwan
The Pentagon has rerouted an aircraft carrier strike group from the Indo-Pacific to the Middle East, marking the US Navy's fourth such manoeuvre in less than a year and prompting words of caution in Taiwan Advertisement Analysts said the United States would need to look at ways to balance immediate operational needs in the Middle East with long-term strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific, as fluctuating and prolonged conflicts make increased demands on American military resources. According to US and other media reports, the nuclear-powered USS Nimitz halted operations in the South China Sea on Monday to sail to the Middle East to support the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group. The carrier cancelled plans to dock in Vietnam this week, Reuters reported on Monday citing sources, one of whom said the US embassy in Hanoi had mentioned 'an emergent operational requirement'. 01:16 US Navy jets fly over American aircraft carrier in South China Sea US Navy jets fly over American aircraft carrier in South China Sea The latest US Navy redeployment comes as arch-enemies Israel and Iran are engaged in their worst hostilities in decades.
