Fahmi Reza issues letter of demand over ‘travel ban'

PETALING JAYA : Activist and graphic artist Fahmi Reza has issued a letter of demand to the authorities after being prevented from travelling abroad recently, despite no official travel ban in place.
The letter, dated June 13 and shared on Fahmi's social media pages, was addressed to Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain, immigration director-general Zakaria Shaaban, and home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
According to his lawyer, Yohendra Nadarajan, Fahmi was stopped at KLIA Terminal 2 on June 7 while trying to board a flight to Singapore. Immigration officials at the airport had reportedly told Fahmi to check with Bukit Aman on the travel restriction.
The next day, Razarudin was reported as saying there was no travel ban on Fahmi but that his name had been placed on an 'internal movement monitoring list for investigation purposes'.
Yohendra said that there is no basis under the law for Fahmi to be added to such a list, adding that Fahmi had previously been told, in 2022 when renewing his passport, that his name had already been removed from any such list.
He added that checks on the immigration department's website showed conflicting information, with the Bahasa Melayu version stating he was restricted, but the English version stating he was not.
For the record, the department has since acknowledged the discrepancy and said it was conducting a technical review.
'No authority has taken responsibility for the violation of our client's rights on June 7,' Yohendra said.
He added that Fahmi is demanding the removal of his name from all monitoring lists, the lifting of any travel restrictions, and compensation, with the amount to be determined.
'If no response is received within seven days from the date of this letter, we will assume the authorities have chosen to maintain our client's name on the listing and a travel restriction is still in effect,' he said.
FMT has reached out to Razarudin, Zakaria and Saifuddin for comment.

Former Masterchef finalist, ex-husband jailed 34 years for maid's murder

Ambree Yunos and his lawyer, Ram Singh, at the Kota Kinabalu High Court. PETALING JAYA : A Masterchef Malaysia finalist and her former husband have been sentenced to 34 years in jail after they were found guilty by the Kota Kinabalu High Court of killing their domestic worker in 2021. Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Sulang's former husband, Ambree Yunos, was also sentenced to 12 strokes of the rotan while she was exempted because of her gender, Sabah Media reported. Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Sulang. Justice Lim Hock Leng ordered their prison sentence to commence today. Ambree, a contractor, and Etiqah were charged with killing Nur Afiyah Daeng Damin, 28, at their condominium unit in Penampang between Dec 8 and Dec 11, 2021. They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty, or 30 to 40 years' jail, and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. Lim said the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt against the prosecution's case. He said the prosecution had proven three key elements – that the victim died from her injuries, that the injuries were caused by the two accused with intent, and that the pair had acted with a common intention. During sentencing, deputy public prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus sought the death sentence, saying the case had shocked both Sabah and the nation, and that it warranted the heaviest penalty possible. Dacia said the deceased was a young woman who had left her hometown for honest work amid the pandemic, but ended up losing her life at her workplace. She said the victim suffered daily and was denied her basic human rights. Ambree and Etiqah, who were represented by lawyers Ram Singh and Rakhbir Singh, were previously out on bail.

Sungai Kapar Kechil pollution caused by lorry dumping waste, says exco

The water at Sungai Kapar Kechil in Kapar, Klang, has turned dark blue after a lorry dumped waste into it, said the Selangor government. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Waste dumped into Sungai Kapar Kechil in Kapar, Klang, is believed to have caused the pollution which has turned the water dark blue. Jamaliah Jamaluddin, who heads the public health and environment committee, said checks by the state's water management authority (Luas) at the river mouth and upstream showed no source of water pollutants. 'Based on information by the complainant and an inspection carried out, we suspect the river was polluted by a lorry dumping waste into it,' she said in a statement, adding that it was a 'one-off' occurrence. She said Luas has since taken samples at the site as well as at the river mouth and upstream, which will be sent to the chemistry department for analysis. 'But we will be monitoring the site from time to time to ensure no recurrence,' she said. Jamaliah advised the people to be alert and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. 'We need everyone to play their part to ensure that Selangor's rivers and water sources remain clean, safe and sustainable,' she said.
