Researchers sound alarm after recording sudden drop in species used to help fight diseases: 'That is really, really dangerous'

One Florida lizard species has been distracting mosquitoes away from humans and bearing the brunt of their bites.
However, that lizard's population is dwindling, leaving increasing mosquito populations to feed on other animals and people instead.
As WLRN and The Miami Herald jointly reported, brown anole lizards have been declining in numbers due to reptile collectors releasing their unwanted pets in the wild — primarily, the outlet said, the larger Peter's rock agamas were out-competing the brown anoles for food, dwindling the local population. In the past, brown anoles were prime targets for local mosquitoes.
The report noted that an agama "hides in cracks and crevices as soon as the sun begins to set," generally making it less susceptible to mosquito bites than brown anole lizards. Researchers studied whether fewer brown anoles means more birds will get bitten by mosquitoes. Birds are dangerous hosts because of their propensity to spread mosquito-borne diseases.
To test their theory about mosquitoes' shifting behaviors, the researchers captured and studied mosquitoes and studied the DNA to identify forensic evidence of what they were biting when they had anoles in their area and when the researchers had caught many anoles and subtracted them from the area. The hypothesis was that when there are not many anoles in the area, the rates of bird bites rise.
This WLRN and Miami Herald report came in the middle of these efforts, so it's a "to be continued" for now. But when the results are available, they hope to better understand how humans' introduction of non-native species damages ecosystems and has unintended consequences that risk human health.
A University of Florida invasion ecologist, Melissa Miller, said, "Brown anoles seem like such a small component of the ecosystem, but even removing that can have impacts that are felt much higher up the food chain, all the way to humans."
This research is significant because of the disease risks mosquitoes carry and because mosquito activity is becoming more common in places like Florida. Our planet's steady overheating is creating ideal conditions for mosquitoes to thrive and multiply.
With this population boost comes the increased spread of vector-borne illnesses that cause people to become very sick and even die. Mosquitoes are evolving and adapting to rising global temperatures, making diseases like dengue, malaria, and Zika more common in places they've never existed.
It is expected that within the next 25 years, mosquito season in the U.S. will last two months longer than it does now.

"That is really, really dangerous, because toward the end of the transmission period, that is when most of these mosquitoes are infected," said Miami-Dade's Mosquito Control's division chief, Dr. John-Paul Mutebi. "They keep on picking up the pathogens as the season goes."

Hank Woolley was visiting the Natural History Museum of Utah one day when he stumbled across a jar labeled 'lizard.' Inside was a 76-million-year-old fossil that paleontologists had uncovered from Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in 2005. It was eventually transported to the Natural History Museum of Utah in Salt Lake City, where it ended up being stored in a jar. Woolley, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County's Dinosaur Institute, opened the jar to find a fragmentary skeleton, which inspired him to dig deeper. 'We know very little about large-bodied lizards from the Kaiparowits Formation in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah, so I knew this was significant right away,' he explained in a statement. That decision a few years ago is now helping researchers gain a better understanding of the fossil's importance, as it gives them an improved glimpse of what Utah's ecosystem looked like 76 million years ago. Woolley is the lead author of a new study identifying a prehistoric ancestor of the Gila monsters that roam southern Utah and the Southwest U.S. today. His team's findings were published in the journal Royal Society Open Science on Tuesday. 'Discovering a new species of lizard that is an ancestor of modern Gila monsters is pretty cool in and of itself, but what's particularly exciting is what it tells us about the unique 76-million-year-old ecosystem it lived in,' said co-author Randy Irmis, an associate professor at the University of Utah and curator of paleontology at the Natural History Museum of Utah, and one of the study's co-authors. Paleontologists knew the fossil was 'significant' when they first uncovered it two decades ago, Irmis explains. They brought it back to Salt Lake City, where it sat and waited for the right expert to know its gravity. Woolley, who specializes in lizard evolution, happened to be that guy. He quickly got to work assembling the team that pieced together the fossils and then analyzed its skull, vertebrae and limbs, as well as other features. The team discovered that the lizard was much more intact than many lizard species of its time, and that they had uncovered a species previously unknown to experts. The species would have been about the size of a raccoon, making it one of the smaller creatures of its time, which is when southern Utah was more of a subtropical floodplain, researchers point out. The team decided to name the species Bolg amondol, or 'Bolg' for short. It's a nod to the goblin prince from J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit,' largely for the lizard's goblin-like skull. 'The fact that Bolg coexisted with several other large lizard species indicates that this was a stable and productive ecosystem where these animals were taking advantage of a wide variety of prey and different microhabitats,' Irmis said. The team says the discovery could help piece together the evolution of lizards, especially since it was a precursor to modern-day species like the Gila monster. Irmis co-authored another study published earlier this year that explored how crocodiles and alligators may have survived extinction, which included species that would have existed at the same time as Bolg. Meanwhile, the researchers also believe there were probably other species like it that existed during the Late Cretaceous Period, which is a more probable theory thanks to Bolg. The next discovery could be waiting to be uncovered in Utah's public lands, or stored safely away in a jar like Borg.

Zika cases detected in Woodlands: What you need to know about the virus

SINGAPORE - Two Zika cases have been confirmed in Woodlands Street 11 and Street 32 on June 19. The National Environment Agency (NEA) said enhanced surveillance has revealed persistent Zika virus signals in the area, which suggest it is an area with likely Zika transmission. The Zika virus has been found in wastewater or mosquito samples collected in the vicinity of the reported cases. A check on the NEA website shows that as at June 18, there are no Zika clusters in Singapore. Here's what you need to know about the virus: Zika is a viral infection spread mainly through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito, which also carries the dengue and chikungunya viruses. It can be transmitted through sex, transfusion of blood and blood products, or from mother to foetus during pregnancy. There is no noticeable pattern as to when Zika cases tend to peak. The symptoms of Zika and dengue are similar. The viruses can be differentiated by virological tests. Only one in five people infected with the virus displays symptoms. The most common symptoms are fever, rash, headache, joint and muscle pain, and red eyes. The symptoms usually develop between three and 12 days after the mosquito bite and often lasts between four and seven days. Nausea and vomiting may also occur. Individuals who suspect they have contracted Zika should see a doctor quickly, advised NEA. A reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test uses blood and urine tests to determine the infection. Zika infection in blood can be detected between five and seven days of the onset of symptoms, and in urine within 14 days of the first appearance of symptoms. Unborn babies are at greatest risk should their mother get infected with the Zika virus. Between 1 per cent and 10 per cent of women infected during pregnancy give birth to babies with birth defects. The most common defect is microcephaly where the baby is born with a much smaller head and often a smaller brain that might not have developed properly. Other birth defects include difficulty swallowing, hearing loss, and vision problems and seizures. Not all babies born with congenital Zika virus will have all of these conditions. Some babies develop long-term health problems later on in their life. There is no known cure for the Zika virus, but symptoms of the infection can be treated. To avoid getting infected, people are advised to use mosquito repellant and wear clothing that covers the body, arms and legs. NEA also advises the public to prevent mosquito breeding by removing stagnant water at home and surrounding areas. Stagnant water in potted plants should also be emptied regularly. Sleeping under mosquito nets and in rooms with wire-mesh screens can also help keep out mosquitoes. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the first notable outbreak of the virus was in 1952. It was first identified in monkeys in Uganda in 1947. WHO declared the virus a public health emergency in 2016. The first imported case of the virus in Singapore was in May 2016. The first local cluster was detected in August 2016 in the Aljunied area, with a total of 298 cases. The outbreak was contained in four weeks. According to NEA's website, about 72,000 gravitraps are currently deployed across Singapore. There have been a total of seven laboratory-confirmed Zika cases in Singapore as at June 12, 2025. There were 13 recorded cases in 2024. There is currently no evidence that suggests pregnant women are more vulnerable to the Zika virus. However, the effects of the infection are more severe should a pregnant woman contract it. The unborn child can develop a range of birth defects such as microcephaly and other issues later in life. Zika-associated birth defects are more common in infants born to women with exposure to the virus early in the pregnancy. The highest risk of Zika-associated birth defects is with infections that occur during the first and second trimesters of the pregnancy. If a non-pregnant woman contracts the virus, future pregnancies are unlikely to be at risk. The RT-PCR test, which looks for genetic material of the virus in blood or urine, can be used to determine if a pregnant woman is infected. If a pregnant woman is tested positive or inconclusive for Zika, she will be referred to a maternal foetal medicine specialist for counselling and management. She will be closely monitored and offered regular foetal ultrasounds. The healthcare professional may suggest amniotic fluid testing. She should take strict precautions against mosquito bites. There is no need to see a doctor if she is well. If she has symptoms of a possible Zika virus infection, she should seek medical attention immediately and consult an obstetrics and gynaecology doctor. Rare animal hiding in outback photo helps solve decades-long mystery

When you look at this picture of a tiny dragon lizard camouflaged against its red, rocky outback habitat, it's not hard to understand why no one had seen one in decades. Dr Jane Melville is an expert in Australia's dragons, but there's one species she's never seen in the wild — the hidden dragon. 'They're so hard to find,' Melville, the senior curator of terrestrial vertebrates at Museums Victoria, told Yahoo News. Over a decade ago, Melville spent a week searching the last places where hidden dragons were collected — the hillsides north of the famous Wolfe Creek crater in 1979 and Wave Hill in the Top End in 1984. 'We walked around for a week looking for the dragons, but didn't locate them,' she said. 'We know very little about them. They're quite small, so they have quite small home ranges, and they live on this rocky, stony ground.' It's unknown whether they have vanished from those places, and how rare they are elsewhere. In 2011, a botanist accidentally photographed one in the Kimberley, but that was the only sighting until a massive discovery in 2016. In its isolation, Australia developed more lizard species than anywhere else on the planet, with goannas evolving to fill the role as a top-tier predator in some parts of the country, similar to how the now extinct 3.6-metre-high moa was once dominant in New Zealand. For years, the hidden dragon was known by just six 'old' scientific specimens. Measurements taken of the animals late last century were enough to confirm they were a separate species, but it wasn't standard practice to take genetic samples at the time before preserving them in chemicals, so which genus they belonged to was unknown. Excitingly, the dragons were found again at five new sites in the remote central Kimberly in 2016. One of the first to see them was Stephen Mahony, an expert field ecologist who specialises in tracking down reptiles. He was volunteering with non-profit Australian Wildlife Conservancy at its Mornington-Marion Downs Wildlife Sanctuary in 2016. Thousands of years of evolutionary development has given the hidden dragon the ability to camouflage against the earth, but luckily for Mahony and his colleague, this one was easy to see. 'We were driving a car, and saw out the car window a tiny dragon perched on a rock next to the road. We were pretty amazed, because we as ecologists instantly recognised that this was a dragon that hadn't been seen in years,' he said. 'We went back for a search the next day and found several more. Some of them were on top of rocks, some were under rocks, and others were sitting out in the open, but curled up really cryptically, mimicking the rocks themselves.' Because the hidden dragon appeared visually unique when studied last century, it was placed in its own solitary genus called Cryptagama. But new genetic material collected from 2016 onwards that Melville and her team examined, confirmed it was actually part of the Ctenophorus genus. 'Ctenophorus is the biggest genus of dragon lizards. We revised its taxonomy to take it out of the genus Cryptagama and into the genus Ctenophorus, which means it's now Ctenophorus aurita,' Melville said. Her team says this new research into the hidden dragon, "completes the puzzle" of our understanding of the genetic lineages of known Australian dragon species. These findings were published in the Australian Journal of Taxonomy in June. It's not the first time lizards from other genera have been reclassified as Ctenophorus, a genus with remarkable diversity. Researchers have discovered earless dragons that were once classified as Tympanocryptis are actually genetically Ctenophorus. It also includes fast-moving Central Australian sand-dwelling military dragons and robust netted dragons that live in the desert. 'It's really interesting that one related group of lizards has spread across these arid and semi-arid environments across all the different habitats available, from rocky deserts to sandy deserts, with this diversity of morphology,' she said. 200-year-old mistake corrected after 'suspicious' details emerge Details in satellite photos spark 'worrying' prediction Tourists almost kill 'world's oldest' creature There's a key reason researchers need to describe these rare and cryptic species in such detail — it's often the only way to ensure they aren't wiped out. It was Melville's 2019 paper that revealed what was believed to be one species of grassland earless dragons in the eastern states was actually four. Crucially, this meant at the time that two of them, the Victorian and Bathurst species, could have been extinct as they hadn't been observed in decades. This would have been the first time a reptile had gone extinct in the wild on mainland Australia. The Victorian species was rediscovered at one site in 2023, and it's unlikely to exist anywhere else in the wild, and researchers are still searching for evidence that the Bathurst species survives. The world is undergoing a human-driven mass extinction event, believed to be wiping out species 1,000 to 10,000 times what would naturally be occurring. In Australia, habitat destruction, climate change and the spread of invasive species all remain key threats to native wildlife. There's no doubt that some small species with limited home ranges have vanished entirely without anyone ever knowing they existed, a phenomenon referred to as silent extinction. Melville thinks it's entirely possible there could be more species of dragon lizard, camouflaged in remote parts of Australia still waiting to be described. 'It wouldn't completely surprise me if there were,' she said. 'I was up in the Kimberley some time, up on the Mitchell Plateau, and I saw a dragon that was completely different. We called it Diporiphora pallida and it's the only one that's ever been caught. They could be up there everywhere, but no one goes there.'
