The second-generation Mahindra Thar is a rugged yet affordable compact SUV, which has been something of a hit in its home market of India. However markets such as South Africa have missed out on it so far.
Since its introduction in 2020, the latest Thar has found more than 250,000 homes in India, and its popularity has surged further since the introduction of the five-door Roxx version in late 2024.
When the latter was launched last year, Mahindra's head of automotive operations, Rajesh Jejurikar, told Business Today that the company had no immediate plans to export the model to markets outside of India. He said the factory would instead focus on satisfying demand in its home market.
'At this point of time, we are expecting that we are going to be pretty full with meeting domestic requirements for some point of time, so no plans on exports,' Jejurikar told the Indian publication.

Mahindra Thar Roxx.
Image: Supplied
However, that could be about to change. Mahindra recently increased production of the Thar in India, with capacity having increased from 6,500 units per month, in November 2024, to around 9,000 at present, Autocar reported.
This comes as rumours circulate about the Thar's possible South African introduction later this year.
Local Mahindra representatives announced at the recent Nampo show that the company planned to launch another SUV in South Africa this year, but they did not give any further details about this product. Yet given the options currently available in India, the Thar Roxx would appear to be the only viable option for local introduction.
Furthermore, local dealers that we spoke to say they're expecting the new model to arrive around September this year.
Interestingly, Mahindra was blocked from introducing the three-door Thar from the Australian market in 2021 after Jeep instituted legal action due to the vehicle's perceived resemblance to the Wrangler. But it is not believed that there are any legal impediments to the vehicle being introduced in South Africa.
What is the Mahindra Thar Roxx?
Although many have labelled it as a potential Suzuki Jimny killer, the Mahindra Thar Roxx is a somewhat bigger vehicle, with an overall length of 4,428mm stretching well beyond the Jimny's 3,820mm footprint.
However, the Thar Roxx is still relatively compact, given that a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited stretches out at 4,882mm, and its pricing certainly overlaps with the aforementioned Suzuki.
In India, the Thar Roxx costs between 12.99 and 23.39 Lahk (R271,000 to R489,000), while the Jimny 5-door sells for 12.76 to 14.96 Lahk (R266,000 to R313,000). Keep in mind that South African prices would be somewhat higher due to duties and other associated import costs.
The cabin is available with some high-end features.

Youth Month: Building a stronger CA pipeline by addressing the accounting skills gap

African women chartered accountants remain a minority. Image: File. As South Africa commemorates Youth Month, a time dedicated to honouring the role of young people in shaping the nation's future, it's a vital time to reflect on how we are preparing them for meaningful participation in the economy. One of the most impactful professional pathways is that of the Chartered Accountant (CA) - a role that underpins ethical, sustainable leadership in both business and the public sector. CA's play a pivotal role in ensuring financial integrity, driving strategic decision-making and upholding governance standards across sectors. Yet despite its significance, the CA profession remains out of reach for many talented South Africans due to persistent systemic barriers in our education and training landscape. The journey to qualification is demanding, requiring not only technical excellence but resilience, adaptability, and the right kind of support. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Structural challenges such as unequal access to quality basic education, limited career guidance, and the pressures of work and home life can disproportionately affect students. The result? Many capable young people are excluded from pursuing this career - not because they lack potential, but because they lack opportunity. To strengthen the CA pipeline, educational institutions should consider innovative ways to support aspiring accountants. Academic programmes should strike a balance between rigour and responsiveness, reflecting the real-life challenges students face. Flexibility is vital - whether through part-time study, half-workloads, online learning options, or inclusive teaching approaches that cater to diverse learning styles. Creating conditions where students can truly succeed requires programmes that integrate empathy, academic excellence, and a future-ready mindset. Comprehensive support is equally critical. Psychosocial services, academic scaffolding, and bridging programmes must be seen as essential, not optional. Students from under-resourced schools need more than just a seat in a lecture hall or course - they need targeted interventions that address learning gaps and boost self-confidence. Tools like structured weekly study plans, mentorship from recent PGDA graduates, access to engaged academic staff, dynamic online platforms, and a dedicated wellness team create a personalised support system. This ensures that students are not only academically capable, but also emotionally and mentally prepared and supported to navigate the demands of the CA journey and beyond. Today's accounting education must also evolve in line with the profession itself. It must include digital literacy, sustainability, and data analytics alongside traditional technical competencies. Career trajectories are also shifting - from audit and financial management to entrepreneurship and public sector leadership - and education must prepare students for this diverse range of roles. Encouragingly, results are beginning to reflect the value of these adaptive, student-centred approaches. Milpark Education's recent performance in the SAICA Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC) is a powerful example. More than 21% of all successful IAC candidates came from Milpark - a clear sign that flexible, well-supported online learning models can work, especially for students juggling multiple responsibilities. South Africa's youth unemployment crisis demands bold, innovative solutions. Building a more inclusive and accessible CA pipeline must be part of that response. By removing barriers and investing in the full potential of our youth, we don't just close a skills gap - we unlock opportunities for economic participation, ethical leadership, and nation-building. A future-focused, inclusive accounting profession can be a powerful engine for change. Sumaya West, Subject Head of Corporate Governance and Auditing at Milpark Education. Image: Supplied.

South African sporting weekend: Time to line-up some chores as we scrape the barrel

South Africa's Brad Binder will be hoping for a better for performance at the Italian MotoGP Grand Prix. Image: Lluis Gene / AFP This weekend could be the ideal opportunity to catch up on those chores that you have been ignoring since the start of the year. A bit of gardening, a bit of DIY around the house. Spend some time with the in-laws. It's the weekend to get your tax return in order and the ideal dust off that old gym card and do a bit of cardio. This is not the weekend you're going to spend on the couch and channel hop while watching your favourite sports teams in action. It's rather slim pickings, I'm afraid. Friday night is decent, with our first glimpse of the British and Irish Lions ahead of their tour of Australia, while the Proteas Women start their T20 series against West Indies. But Saturday and Sunday is looking rather dire, with only Brad Binder in the MotoGP, Mamelodi Sundowns in the Club World Cup and the second T20 between the Proteas and the Windies of national importance for - as sports minister Gayton McKenzie puts it - 'the best sports nation in the world'. Next Stay Close ✕ There's not a lot of rugby on Saturday and Sunday, as the Springboks' international season only kicks off next Saturday with a clash against the Barbarians in Cape Town. Rassie Erasmus' men will then play a two-Test series against Italy before concluding the winter window with a match against Georgia. The only Test match this weekend is the British and Irish Lions' match against Argentina on Friday night (9pm). That match is essentially a warm-up for their tour Down Under, which starts next Saturday with a game against the Western Force. The Super Rugby final between the Crusaders and the Chiefs could be a good watch to see how New Zealand rugby is going ahead of their Test series against France and Rugby Championship, which will see them host the Springboks in Auckland and Wellington later this year. After last week's gripping World Test Championship final, the Proteas men will enjoy a two-week break before getting back into action in a two-Test series against Zimbabwe away. England vs India should make for some good viewing for lovers of Test cricket, but it's not going to conjure up the same emotions we experienced last weekend. However, the Proteas Women are in action on Friday night and Sunday afternoon in the shortest format after they beat the Windies in the ODI series. The team will be involved in the Women's ODI World Cup in October and will definitely be worth the watch to see the next generation of Proteas greats. Sundowns' match against German giants Borussia Dortmund is probably the highlight of the weekend. It will be a fascinating watch to see how the Betway Premiership giants go against one of the best club sides in the world.
