England v Spain clash descends into chaos with huge melee after Young Lions' win

England booked their place in the semi-finals of the under-21 European Championship on Saturday by beating Spain 3-1 and sparks flew after the full-time whistle
England and Spain's under-21 players clashed in a huge melee after their fiery European Championship quarter-final encounter. There were multiple skirmishes on the pitch after the final whistle, with England having ran out 3-1 winners to book a tie with the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
It boiled over Trnava, Slovakia as Spain's anger didn't mix well with England's celebrations. Coaches from both teams had to split the players up, with the match officials also getting involved.

Spain's Rafa Marin was sent off following the full-time whistle, while England goalscorer James McAtee picked up a booking.

Eventually they dispersed, with brief handshakes between players and staff being exchanged. Lee Carsley's side can now focus on continuing their defence of the title, having lifted the trophy in 2023.
Skipper McAtee and Liverpool attacker Harvey Elliott, one of only two Three Lions stars to have lifted the trophy in 2023, inflicted early damage with two quick-fire goals inside the opening 15 minutes before Elliot Anderson capped the victory with a stoppage-time penalty. Carsley's inspired changes - there were four in total - initially raised eyebrows but they sparked England into life despite the controversial omission of powerhouse midfielder Anderson.
The defending champions, who had looked flat and underwhelmed in a goalless draw against Slovenia before lumbering to defeat against Germany in their final group match, are now alive and kicking in Slovakia following a dogged team display that was also littered with character. England survived two early scares, first Diego Lopez headed over from close range before Spain were awarded a penalty when Lopez's shot struck the hand of Charlie Cresswell. Cresswell had attempted to tuck his arms behind his body and thankfully, that was swiftly recognised by VAR assistant Daniele Chiffi and the decision was overturned by referee Simone Sozza. England wasted no time in using that good fortune to their advantage as returning captain McAtee fired the opener on 10 minutes after Spain failed to clear their lines following Alex Scott's dangerous corner. Scott's delivery skimmed off the head of Benat Turrientes before Cristhian Mosquera diverted the ball into the path of Manchester City star McAtee, who gratefully swept home. Five-time champions Spain looked shellshocked five minutes later when Carsley's hungry Three Lions ruthlessly doubled their advantage through Elliott. It was a goal manufactured on Merseyside, Bayer Leverkusen-bound centre-back Jarell Quansah ventured forward and let fly from distance, the shot was spilled by Alejandro Iturbe and Elliott beat the offside trap to poke into the empty net.

Fluid England were now purring and nearly added a third when Tino Livramento powered down the right before Spain somehow weathered the storm. La Roja were handed a lifeline six minutes from the break when Cresswell chopped down Alberto Moleiro in the box and this time, his blushes would not be spared. Former Leeds team-mate Mateo Joseph initially grabbed the ball but was stripped off spot-kick duty after missing the target from 12-yards in Spain's opening group fixture against Slovakia. Valencia's Javi Guerra showed forward Joseph how it's done, calmly wrong-footing James Beadle. However, Brighton goalkeeping prospect Beadle did come up trumps on the hour mark to twice deny Guerra via a crucial double save before Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton, making his first start of the competition, almost fired in a third.
Jack Hinshelwood narrowly headed over at the far post but England did finally put the game to bed at the death before tensions boiled over at full-time. In the final exchanges, Jonathan Rowe raced in behind and was chopped down by Spain goalkeeper Iturbe and Newcastle ace Anderson made no mistake from the spot.

Liverpool could use two players to produce amazing transfer swap deal

Liverpool have already made big moves in the transfer market this summer and confirmed Florian Wirtz's arrival at Anfield on Friday but more major deals could await Liverpool have dominated the summer transfer window thus far. They've completed the biggest deal so far in securing Florian Wirtz's signature and could pay up to £116million for the privilege. And the Reds have also completed one of the most notable deals too by bringing in £10m for Trent Alexander-Arnold. The full-back moved to Real Madrid just weeks before his contract at Anfield was set to expire. ‌ But, according to reports in Italy, Liverpool could yet be involved in another mega deal. Arne Slot's side are said to still be interested in a striker and that could provoke some big movement. ‌ The Reds have been linked to moves for Newcastle star Alexander Isak and Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike and neither player would come cheap. But some creativity could make a move for another striker possible. Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web claim Liverpool have made a proposal to Napoli for Victor Osimhen. The Serie A champions are keen to offload the Nigeria international after failing to sell him last summer and the Merseyside club may have come up with a solution for everyone. The Reds are reported to have offered up Darwin Nunez and Federcio Chiesa in exchange for the 26-year-old who starred on loan at Galatasaray in 2024/25. Osimhen has also been linked with Manchester United in addition and is said to have snubbed a move to Al-Hilal. Darwin is expected to leave Anfield this summer as he goes in search of greater playing time, while Chiesa has been told by new Italy boss Gennaro Gattuso that he must play more frequently to be part of his plans. 'In these days, I called 35 players [who did not make the squad], I spoke to everyone,' Gattuso said earlier this week. 'Even Chiesa, whom I told to play consistently. ‌ "There are players who have been out but who can lend a hand. The pitch speaks: if you do things well, the doors of the national team are open." Swap deals rarely move as smoothly however with so many moving parts beyond simply agreeing a deal. And it has been suggested that Osimhen may in fact be waiting for United to make their own move. Rio Ferdinand told his Rio Presents YouTube channel: 'No.9? They already know who I want. The comments know, the people know who I want, who I would go and get: Osimhen! 'It looks like he's turned down Al-Hilal… he must be waiting for Manchester United. I don't know if Manchester United are going to come. That's the problem.' We deserve it so much – Harvey Elliott hails England's quarter-final victory

The Young Lions benefited from an early let-off after a VAR check resulted in an overturned penalty before captain James McAtee netted a 10th minute opener, Elliott scored five minutes later and substitute Elliot Anderson added a penalty in second-half stoppage time. Javi Guerra's 39th-minute penalty denied a clean sheet for the defending champions, but it was nevertheless a splendid night for Lee Carsley's men, who face the Netherlands in the final four on Wednesday. What a win. What a performance. OUR #YOUNGLIONS ARE INTO THE #U21EURO SEMI-FINALS! 👏 — England (@England) June 21, 2025 'Incredible. Lost for words, I think,' said Elliott. 'I said at the start of the game it was going to be very tough, they're going to play an incredible game against us, but I thought the way the lads handled it, handled the pressure, conceding a goal and being determined to keep on going, keep on fighting, we deserve it so much. 'Now it's kind of time to celebrate, but we need to think about the semis now. Celebrate, recover, rest, go again.' Tyler Morton will miss the last-four clash through suspension after he was booked against Spain, while Napoli's Rafa Marin saw red before a post-match scuffle broke out between the sides. Elliott added: 'It was always going to happen. I think it's just passion from both teams, it's just one of them. I was trying to calm everyone down, because at the end of the day we have everything to lose. They don't if they get sent off. 'We have to focus now, we can't get too carried away, we can't lose players for the semi-final.' Manchester City midfielder McAtee was more subdued than his team-mate, adding: 'We're over the moon, but the focus is the semi-final now. We're happy about the win, but we need to switch focus.' England boss Carsley was delighted by the way his men responded after nearly conceding a penalty in the early stages of the first half. 'We talked about getting a fast start and to give the penalty away after a minute, obviously then going to VAR – the lads showed a lot of character,' Carsley said. Through to the semis! 💪 — England (@England) June 21, 2025 'I thought the first half we were so good. I was saying before the game, I think the longer we can stay in, the more fluid we will become. Some really outstanding performances and they should be proud of themselves.' England will now get some much-needed rest and a day off before turning to their semi-final tie. Carsley added: 'The big thing is this can't be our final. This can't be our highlight of the competition, there's better nights to come.'
