Paras Dlamini's debut album offers a fresh take on South African jazz

TimesLIVE06-05-2025

Internationally acclaimed jazz artist Paras 'Sibalukhulu' Dlamini is set to release his highly anticipated debut album Ingoma Busuku – Song of Night.
In March, Dlamini released the single Indimbane Yezizwe, a powerful track that made waves on the global jazz scene and advocated for unity and self-empowerment across the African continent.
Speaking to TshisaLIVE, he said Ingoma Busuku is an album that blends southern African idioms with innovative jazz sensibilities, creating a captivating musical journey.
'This project was born out of a creative synergy that took shape during Linda Sikhakhane's SA/Swiss Celebration Group Tour in early 2023. I first caught attention for my feature on Sikhakhane's previous album Isambulo, where I contributed to the track uNongoma. This collaboration led to the creation of Ingoma Busuku, an album that reflects my rich cultural heritage and my innovative approach to jazz,' he said.
Produced by Blue Note Records artist and composer Nduduzo Makhathini, Ingoma Busuku is a spiritually charged album that promises to make listeners dance, meditate and reflect. Dlamini is accompanied by the eloquent company of saxophonist Linda Sikhakhane, alongside the SA/Swiss Celebration Group featuring Swiss pianist Lucca Fries and drummer Jonas Ruther, with French bassist Géraud Portal.
'My voice, rooted from my native Zulu language, shines through in the album's grooves, which is complemented by his multidimensional musical influences. Whether through soulful ballads or rhythmic explorations, I offer a fresh take on South African jazz that speaks to both local and international audiences.'

Designer on a mission to redefine African Print

Nhlakanipho Masuku (30), an emerging designer, is on a mission to change perceptions of African print through his brand, Sheshu Xabange – which means 'Think Fast'. Nhlakanipho learnt the art of sewing from his mother, who taught him to create garments from scratch. This early exposure ignited a passion for design that has stayed with him ever since. After matriculating from Allen Glen High School, he decided to pursue his passion and launched Sheshu Xabange in 2018. His journey is about more than creating striking garments – it is about empowerment and inspiring the next generation of fashion creatives. 'The name Sheshu Xabange is more of an inspirational term that encourages youngsters to stand firm and believe in themselves,' he says. 'Most of us associate African print with traditional weddings or ceremonies, but I wanted to change that perception and show it can be worn on the streets and look stylish.' As he honed his skills, Nhlakanipho began to see fashion as a tool for empowerment, particularly for young people. Sheshu Xabange draws inspiration from his personal experiences, including the loss of friends to substance abuse. 'I use it as therapy and a way to express myself. Some of my collections feature symbolic colours and detailing to represent the journey of healing and self-love. 'My collection includes jackets, skirts, shorts, blazers, and everything is unisex,' he adds. His brand has gained recognition on the fashion scene, with showcases at Soweto Fashion Week and Newton Fashion Week. He hopes to one day show his work at fashion weeks in New York, Paris and Milan. Through his brand, Nhlakanipho also aims to raise awareness of key issues affecting young people and to empower them through education, campaigns and community involvement. 'I want to use my brand to give back to the community and support the youth. Whether by teaching them sewing skills or involving them as models or marketers; I want to make a difference,' he says. WATCH: Youth choir thrills as Kruger sunset and bush sounds play along

The Ndlovu Youth Choir received a well-deserved 'golden buzzer' from the Kruger National Park audience at Friday night's (June 13) Kruger Concert for Conservation organised by the SANParks Honorary Rangers. The choir first shot to fame in 2019 when they ended in the top 10 of America's Got Talent, stealing the hearts of the judges and audiences in the process. From humble beginnings as a choir from a remote village in Limpopo, the group's new-found fame took them on a global journey, performing, producing music albums and garnering millions of views on social media platforms. With perfect weather and a magical setting, the evening started with the 500 guests enjoying harvest table delicacies and sipping on a variety of great wines, gin and bubbly. WATCH THE VIDEO HERE: Set against the sunset canvas of red and orange and the life-size Honorary Rangers elephants standing tall next to the main stage, the Skukuza runway was transformed. Better ambience could not have been asked for when the concert commenced with the Lowveld group, Meisie Music, featuring Naomi Tagg and Janette Rottcher on violins, with Lizanne Barnard on piano, vocals, flute and drum. Their renditions of 'The Fire Within', 'My Sarie Marais', 'Now We are Free' and 'Mamela' lay the foundation for the rest of the programme. With everyone in high spirits, the internationally acclaimed Ndlovu Youth Choir burst onto the stage after a short break, filling the air with vibrant song and dance. Crowd favourites like 'My African Dream', 'Shosholoza', Toto's 'Africa', and a twist on Kurt Darren's song 'Kaptein' had everyone tapping their feet. You could hear a pin drop when their adaptation of 'Nessun Dorma', with its distinct African sounds, was performed. The audience rewarded it with a standing ovation. Even more unexpected was the rendition of 'Bohemian Rhapsody', unlike anything heard before. Ralf Schmitt, the co-founder and artistic director of the Ndlovu Youth Choir, proudly announced that the official release of the song will take place in the next few weeks. The youngsters' powerhouse vocals, irresistibly combined with mesmerising choreography and infectious energy, ignited the audience, and by the time they played out with 'Pata Pata', everyone was on their feet. The evening not only shared a musical message of hope, love and cohesion, but also kindled the African spirit of those in attendance. The main sponsors, First National Bank and Suzuki Nelspruit, were equally impressed with the evening. Head of fundraising for the Honorary Rangers Lowveld Region, Linda Pieters, said the event exceeded all expectations. 'We are truly blessed with the generosity of our sponsors and the guests who attended. The funds will be used for various approved projects in the Kruger National Park.'
