Govt employee accuses 2 visa agents in 22.5L UK job fraud
Ahmedabad: A govt employee from Gandhinagar on Monday filed a complaint with CID Crime accusing two men of cheating him out of Rs 22.5 lakh by promising UK jobs to his son and daughter-in-law.
Another complainant also has accused the same agent of cheating him of Rs 18.44 lakh with a similar promise.
The assistant city engineer with a municipal office has alleged that a man from the city and his accomplice from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, took money from him in parts between Feb 2023 and March 2023.
The family had approached the city-based visa agent through a mutual acquaintance. The agent returned Rs 1 lakh when a purported Thailand job offer failed, winning the family's trust.
Later, he allegedly promised a job for the son at a care home in Colchester, UK, and asked for Rs 30 lakh but settled for Rs 22.5 lakh. A portion of this amount was allegedly transferred to his partner's account, and the rest was handed over in cash, the complaint said. In March 2023, the Ahmedabad agent gave a certificate of sponsorship and helped the son get a UK visa. After reaching the UK, the son found no job had been arranged.

INDORE: In a significant breakthrough in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, the Shillong police officials recovered the charred remains of the bag which was brought back to Indore by key accused, Sonam, after the murder. The bag, the officials believed, contained key evidence including mobile phones, Raja's gold jewellery. The police have been on the lookout for the bag. The recovery was made from a vacant plot in Hare Krishna Vihar Colony near MR-3 in Indore. The operation was carried out by Shillong Police in coordination with Indore Crime Branch and forensic experts, who collected the partially burnt electronic components and blackened metallic fragments from the site. The Shillong SIT officials had on Saturday late night arrested Silom James, a property dealer from Mahalaxmi Nagar in Indore. Silom had rented the flat to Vishal for Rs 17,000 a month. Sonam shifted into the flat after returning to Indore. After the arrests of other accused in the case from Indore, Sonam left for Ghazipur on June 8, leaving the bag behind. Two days later, Silom allegedly entered the flat using a duplicate key and took away bags, clothes, food items, and other belongings which he claimed he destroyed at the vacant plot. Police sources said that CCTV footage sourced by them shows the accused Silom removing the bag from the flat in his car on June 10. Earlier, Silom had appeared before the media on June 13, claiming he recognized one of the accused, Vishal, after seeing him in TV news and newspaper reports. Meanwhile, the second accused Ballu alias Balvindar, was arrested from Ashoknagar and brought to Indore on Sunday afternoon. Both have been booked for aiding murder accused and tampering with evidence. Sunil, booked via an application by Vishal, had unknowingly transported the bag. Sunil told police that on May 31, around 1pm, he went near Church School in Nandbagh where a young man, suspected to be Vishal alias Vicky, handed him a bag. He was instructed to deliver it to Heera Bagh. About an hour later, upon reaching Heera Bagh Colony near Dewas Naka, another man received the bag and paid his fare. This revelation confirmed that the bag belonging to Sonam and Raja had remained in the flat even after their departure. SIT officials checked the CCTV footage, it was found that while the bag was taken to the flat, it did not come out when Sonam left the city. Two days later, Silom was seen taking it with him. Man killed in last month's encounter was a govt school cook, officials say; police maintain Maoist link
A 38-year-old tribal man, who was among the seven killed in an encounter between Maoists and security forces at Indravati National Park in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on June 5, worked as a cook in a government school in the local village for over a year, officials said. Police have said all seven of those killed were Maoists, including the cook, Mahesh Kudiyam. Kudiyam, from Irpagutta village, was a cook at a local school and also a member of the CPI (Maoist)'s National Park area committee, carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, police said. His family, however, denied the allegations and told Bastar-based YouTube channel, Bastar Talkies, that he was killed while he was out grazing cattle. Bijapur Collector Sambit Mishra said an impartial magisterial inquiry was being conducted into the incident. After the exchange of fire on June 5, the body of a member of the Maoists' Central Committee, Sudhakar alias Gautam, was recovered on the same day. Over the next two days, six more bodies were recovered, including that of the Maoists' Telangana State Committee (TSC) member, Bhaskar, as well as Kudiyam. An official from the Bijapur education department confirmed to The Indian Express that Kudiyam was a cook at a local school in the National Park area and was hired in September 2023, drawing a salary of Rs 2,000 per month. The official said that due to summer holidays, he was on leave. An official statement released by Inspector General of Police for Bastar Range, Sundarraj P, also said Kudiyam was a cook at the school, but maintained that he was also a Maoist. 'During inquest proceedings, it was confirmed that Mahesh Kodiyam was a party member of the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation operating in the National Park Area division, and he had clear links with the proscribed group. It has also come to light that Mahesh Kodiyam was working as a cook assistant at the primary school in Irpagutta village. His appointment had been made by the village school management committee, and he was being paid remuneration for this role until March 2025. The circumstances under which Mahesh Kodiyam came into contact with senior Maoist leaders, like Central Committee member Gautam and State Committee member Bhaskar, are currently under investigation. A thorough, impartial, and professional inquiry is being conducted into all aspects of the case.' The statement also urged individuals 'directly or indirectly associated with the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation to immediately sever all such ties'. It said, 'Continued association with this extremist outfit poses a serious threat not only to public safety and regional peace but also to the lives and future of those involved.' However, Kudiyam's wife, brothers and some local residents spoke to the Bastar Talkies YouTube channel and claimed he was not a Maoist. 'Kudiyam was just a cook and a peon in the school. On the day of the encounter, he had gone to graze his cattle,' local resident Irma Vela told the channel. Kudiyam's wife, Sumitra, appealed to the government to provide support to the family as he was the sole breadwinner. The couple had seven children. Sumitra told the channel, 'How will I raise these children by myself?' One of his four brothers, Ajay, said, 'I have studied up to class 6. I do not know what happened. I worked as a coolie in Andhra. I came (days) later and learnt he had gone to graze buffalo and was killed.'
