Bengaluru Police raid over 17 bars for illegally employing female servers, engaging in unlawful activities
Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Police have raided 17 bars across the city on charges of illegally employing female servers and engaging in unlawful activities. The bars were also conducting overtime operations and obscene dances, violating the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
A statement released in this regard by the office of the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner on Friday stated that 11 special teams had conducted raids and found violations of guidelines.
The Bengaluru City Police Commissioner received credible information that several bars and restaurants in the West zone of the city were illegally employing female servers and engaging in unlawful activities. Based on this information, 11 special police teams were formed in the West zone.
"A special raid was conducted on bars and restaurants falling under the jurisdictions of Upparpet, Cottonpet, Kalasipalya, Cubbon Park and Ashoknagar Police Stations,' the statement said.
During the raid, it was found that 19 bars and restaurants were violating regulations by employing female workers who were provocatively dressed and standing near customers' tables in an indecent manner. Further violations included the absence of appointed female security guards, lack of cleanliness in kitchen areas, not designating or maintaining a proper smoking zone and operating beyond permitted hours, the statement said.
Customers who violated the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) regulations were fined on the spot. Reports have been submitted to the respective police stations for further legal action against the owners of the bars and restaurants, according to the statement.
Another significant finding was that violations were not limited to police regulations but also extended to health and excise departments. These findings have been communicated to the concerned departments, requesting appropriate action. Strict monitoring will continue for these commercial establishments in the coming days. If found violating regulations again, their licences will be cancelled, the statement said.
"If the public faces any inconvenience or notices any such violations, they are encouraged to call the helpline number. The identity of informants will be kept confidential,' Bengaluru Police said in the statement.
This special raid operation was conducted under the guidance of C. Vamsi Krishna, Joint Commissioner of Police, West Zone, and under the leadership of S. Girish, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Division, with the involvement of officers and staff from the Central and West Divisions as part of the 11 special police teams.

Bengaluru Doctor Threatens To 'Crash' Air India Express Plane Over Bag Space
A 36-year-old female doctor was taken into custody by Bengaluru Police after she allegedly misbehaved with cabin crew aboard an Air India Express flight and even threatened to crash the aircraft, earlier this week. The incident took place minutes before flight IX2749 was scheduled to take off for Surat International Airport from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), at around 2.30 pm, on Tuesday. According to sources, the female passenger, Vyas Hiral Mohanbhai, left her baggage in the first row of the aircraft before occupying her seat at 20F. When the cabin crew objected to her bag's placement and asked her to keep it in the overhead compartment near her seat, she refused. She, instead, demanded that the crew move her bag to her seat, the sources said. Despite repeated requests by the crew and the pilot's intervention, Ms Mohanbhai refused to comply and allegedly began misbehaving. The sources said she also shouted at fellow passengers who tried to reason with her. The situation escalated when she allegedly threatened to "crash the flight". The pilot and the crew alerted the security and CISF personnel, who subsequently removed her from the aircraft. The woman's behaviour threatened the safety of the remaining passengers, the sources said. The doctor is a resident of Shivanahalli, near Yelahanka, in Bengaluru. According to The Times of India, Ms Mohanbhai also abused and manhandled police officers at KIA police station. Her husband reportedly told police that she has stopped practicing medicine. The woman has been booked under sections 351 (4) (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) and 353 (1)(b) (statements of public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as section 3(1)(a) (act of violence against a person on board an aircraft in flight which is likely to endanger the safety of such aircraft) of the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against Safety of Civil Aviation Act, the Indian Express reported.

Calcutta HC orders resumption of MGNREGA in West Bengal from Aug 1
Kolkata, June 18 (UNI) In a major boost to the West Bengal government, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the Central government to resume the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme in West Bengal from August 1. The court emphasised that while the Centre is within its rights to impose safeguards or conditions to prevent corruption, it cannot indefinitely halt a public welfare scheme that serves millions. A division bench comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Chaitali Chattopadhyay delivered the order, stressing that the suspension of the 100-day rural job scheme — ongoing for three years — was unjustified despite allegations of financial irregularities. The Central government which funds the scheme entirely had suspended MGNREGA funding to West Bengal in March 2022, citing large-scale misappropriation. The court observed that the grievances of genuine workers cannot be ignored on account of administrative or political concerns marking a major development in the long-standing deadlock over the rural employment programme. Additional Solicitor General Ashok Kumar Chakraborty, representing the Centre, said that Central investigation teams uncovered irregularities in districts like Hooghly, East Bardhaman, Malda, and Darjeeling, involving embezzlement of over Rs 50 crore. A broader audit revealed anomalies amounting to Rs 613 crores, of which Rs 2.1 crores had been recovered by the state as of 2024. 'All the allegations are from before 2022. You are free to take any action regarding those. But the project must be started now,' Chief Justice Sivagnanam observed in response during the hearing. The court further clarified that MGNREGA, as legislated, does not allow for its indefinite suspension even in the face of corruption charges, and that any such action violates the spirit of the Act. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by the Paschim Banga Khet Majur Samiti, during which it observed that poor rural labourers should not be made to suffer wage losses and livelihood disruptions due to systemic failures. The bench further suggested that the scheme could be resumed in districts not affected by the alleged irregularities, while investigations continue in the four districts under scrutiny. West Bengal received Rs 7,507.80 crore under MGNREGA in the 2021-22 financial year. However, since then, no funds have been disbursed. The Centre had justified its actions by citing inconsistencies found in 31 out of 63 inspected worksites, according to RTI replies. In earlier observations also, the High Court had noted that the Centre's decision to withhold MGNREGA funds to West Bengal was unprecedented. While several other states had also reported financial irregularities under the scheme, none had faced complete suspension of funds over multiple years. The move, it said, had led to distress migration, financial instability, and stalling of rural development projects in Bengal.
