Tributes pour in as boxer Georgia O'Connor dies aged 25 after cancer battle
Tributes have poured in after the death of British boxer Georgia O'Connor, who has passed away aged 25 after suffering from cancer.
O'Connor won multiple youth medals and represented Great Britain before going 3-0 as a professional. The Durham boxer last competed in October 2022, outpointing Joyce Van Ee on an all-female card at London's O2 Arena – an event headlined by Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall.
In an Instagram post in January, O'Connor revealed her diagnosis and said she suffered from 'colitis and PSC [primary sclerosing cholangitis], two diseases that dramatically increase the chances' of cancer.
On 9 May, she married her partner Adriano Cardinali. He had left his job to support O'Connor during her treatment, according to the boxer's mother.
'We are heartbroken by the passing of Georgia O'Connor,' read a social media post from Boxxer, which promoted her final fight, on Thursday (22 May). 'A true warrior inside and outside the ring, the boxing community has lost a talented, courageous and determined young woman far too soon.
'Georgia was loved, respected and admired by her friends here at Boxxer. Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this difficult time.'
Founder and CEO of Boxxer, Ben Shalom, also posted a message on his personal social media accounts.
'It's hard to make sense of this… a lot goes on in life but nothing else matters other than your family and your health,' wrote Shalom. 'My heart goes out to Georgia's parents and partner, who I know did everything they could tirelessly and are going through so much right now.
'Georgia was an inspirational person and one I'll never forget. So sorry for her family and all her friends. Truly heartbreaking.'
England Boxing wrote: 'We're deeply saddened by the passing of Georgia O'Connor. A gifted boxer and beloved member of the amateur boxing community, she won medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games, Youth Worlds & European Championships. Our thoughts are with her loved ones.'
'Everyone at Queensberry Promotions [is] deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Georgia O'Connor,' read another social media post. 'All of our thoughts are with her friends and family during this difficult time. Rest in peace Georgia.'
Meanwhile, Sky Sports said, 'The thoughts of everyone at Sky Sports Boxing are with Joe Gallagher and Georgia O'Connor,' referencing coach Gallagher's ongoing cancer treatment.

Premier League contact Chelsea over Boehly ticket website
The Premier League have written to Chelsea to seek clarification over the club's position with ticket re-sellers - amid controversy over Todd Boehly's involvement in Vivid Seats. Boehly is both a director and investor in Vivid, described as an "unauthorised ticket seller" by the league, and also owns a 13% stake in Chelsea. The website lists Chelsea matches on its platform, with some tickets last season at Stamford Bridge going for as much as £20,000. It is not allowed to operate in the United Kingdom, although is permissible overseas. Chelsea Supporters' Trust asked the Premier League to "act and investigate" the situation which they believe is both a "breach of trust and "a clear conflict of interest" in an open letter issued in March. Premier League CEO Richard Masters has explained they are discussing the matter with Chelsea in a situation described as "ongoing" at a Football Supporters' Association event last week. The Supporters' Trust has also submitted evidence against the American company to the government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).Boehly, Chelsea and Vivid have been contacted for further comment. Vivid CEO Stanley Chia is quoted by Sportico , externalas saying "economic and political volatility" has impacted the ticketing market as the company's share price fell by 61% this have recently pledged to take action on ticket touting, although without naming Vivid or other ticket re-sellers, which the CST letter said it was "encouraged" by. There have been concerns about a "flat" atmosphere at Stamford Bridge, highlighted by previous manager Mauricio Pochettino and echoed by current head coach Enzo Maresca at times last season, amid trials of a singing section in the Conference are currently participating in the Club World Cup in the United States and next face ES Tunis in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

Carlos Alcaraz beats Lehecka to extend win streak and regain crown as king of Queen's
Carlos Alcaraz was initially not quite ready for the moment when he moved within touching distance of another Queen's title. In the final stages of a bruising second set tiebreak, the score level at 5-5, Alcaraz threw in a double fault against a soaring Jiri Lehecka. He soon found himself battling in a final set he would have rather not contested. Alcaraz handled this moment of adversity with the same self-assurance and courage he has shown so many times before while demonstrating his growing maturity as he refocused to close out the in-form Czech Lehecka 7-5, 6-7 (5) 6-2 and triumph at Queen's for the second time in his career. With his third title in a row following victories at the Italian Open and Roland Garros, Alcaraz has now extended his career-best winning streak to 18 matches. A two-time defending champion at Wimbledon, Alcaraz's march through the draw has provided him with the perfect preparation for greater challenges ahead. He will head to the All England Club as the clear favourite as he tries to become the fifth man in the Open Era to win three singles titles in a row. Alcaraz has built such a supreme résumé at a faster rate than all but only a couple of male tennis players in the history of the sport but for the stratospheric heights his game has already reached, and the many occasions when it seems like he is capable of absolutely anything on the court, his form could also be temperamental. He continued to work through his service games throughout the second set, putting an increasing amount of pressure on Alcaraz's serve. By the final stages of the tiebreak, Lehecka was in control of the baseline. Under pressure for the first time, Alcaraz double faulted at 5-5 in the tiebreak as Lehecka took the set. American McCartney Kessler secured her third career title, defeating Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 7-5 in a rain-interrupted Nottingham Open final. Kessler, who recorded her first main draw tour-level win on grass earlier this month at Queen's, dominated the match from the outset and sealed victory in one hour and 34 minutes. "I'm super excited to have another title. I've gotten to another final, another great week of tennis for me. I want to start by congratulating Dayana on a good week as well," Kessler said. "She's a really tough competitor. We've had three really competitive matches, so congrats on a good week." Vondrousova's career had already been derailed numerous times by significant injuries before her Wimbledon win and she has been continually sidelined since then. Having fallen from her career high ranking of No 6 a year ago, Vondrousova defeated the world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Madison Keys, the Australian Open champion, en-route to her third career title.

Sugar adds Euro gold to world and Paralympic titles
