Microsoft plans thousands of job cuts next month, and these employees are likely to lose their jobs
Microsoft
is preparing to eliminate thousands of jobs primarily targeting its sales division, with the cuts expected to be announced in early July as the company continues restructuring amid massive AI investments, according to people familiar with the matter.
The layoffs will mark the third major workforce reduction this year for the Redmond-based tech giant, following 6,000 cuts in May and over 300 additional eliminations just weeks later. Bloomberg first reported the planned summer layoffs, with sources indicating the timing coincides with the start of Microsoft's new fiscal year beginning in July.
Sales teams face heaviest impact at Microsoft
Unlike previous rounds that primarily affected software engineers and product developers, the upcoming cuts will disproportionately target customer-facing roles. Microsoft's sales and marketing division employs approximately 45,000 of the company's 228,000 total workforce as of June 2024.
The company signaled this shift in April when it announced plans to use third-party firms to handle more software sales to small and mid-sized customers. Sources told Bloomberg the reductions won't exclusively affect sales teams, though they will bear the brunt of the cuts.
AI spending drives cost-cutting measures
Microsoft's layoffs reflect the broader challenge facing tech companies balancing AI investments with operational efficiency. The company has allocated roughly $80 billion for data center spending this fiscal year while executives have pledged to Wall Street to control costs in other areas.
CEO
Satya Nadella
recently described earlier cuts as a "realignment" rather than performance-based decisions, telling employees at an internal town hall that "this was not about people failing. It was about repositioning for what comes next."
The timing follows a pattern for Microsoft, which often announces organizational changes near the end of its fiscal year. The company previously eliminated 10,000 positions in January 2023 after pandemic-driven hiring, and made additional cuts to its videogame division following the Activision Blizzard acquisition.
Microsoft declined to comment on the planned layoffs, with the final number of cuts still being determined according to sources familiar with the matter.

Rs 26 lakhs awarded to employee for not working a single day for four months. Here's what happened
A man in Abu Dhabi has been awarded AED 110,400 (approximately Rs 26 lakh) in unpaid wages, despite never having started work at the company that hired him. The decision came after a court ruled in the employee's favour, highlighting that the delay in his joining was entirely the employer's fault. Employee Signed Contract But Never Got to Work As per a report by Khaleej Times, the employee, whose identity has not been disclosed, signed a fixed-term employment contract with an Abu Dhabi-based company. The agreement promised a basic monthly salary of AED 7,200, with a total compensation package of AED 24,000. The contract covered the period from November 11, 2024, to April 7, 2025. However, despite this agreement, the individual was never actually permitted to begin work. Frustrated by repeated delays and the absence of any opportunity to start his job, the man eventually filed a lawsuit seeking his withheld salary for the contract period. The court accepted his claim and ordered the company to compensate him for four months and 18 days of unpaid wages, after deducting eight days he admitted to being on leave. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Comfortably: 60 m² Prefab Bungalow for Seniors in Tanza Pre Fabricated Homes | Search Ads Search Now Undo Court Places Responsibility on Employer The Abu Dhabi Labour Court held the employer accountable for the delay in onboarding. Citing Federal Decree-Law No. (33) of 2021, the court underlined that employers are legally required to pay wages on time, following standards set by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It also referred to Article 912 of the Civil Transactions Law, which states that a worker's right to wages cannot be denied unless the employee has formally waived that right or acknowledged non-entitlement. The court examined various documents including the wage report, employment contract, and case file, and found that the fault clearly lay with the company. The evidence confirmed that the delay was not caused by the employee, as the employer had failed to provide any proof of misconduct or absenteeism. Employer's Argument Rejected by Court In response to the lawsuit, the company argued that the employee had taken leave and never reported to duty. However, the court found no records or documentation to support this claim. No formal investigation had been conducted into the employee's alleged absence. Consequently, the court dismissed the company's justification and concluded that the employee's failure to start work was directly linked to the employer's own inaction.

AQR's Cliff Asness Sides With Jim Chanos in Critique of Michael Saylor's Strategy
Bloomberg Published 21 Jun 2025, 01:26 AM IST (Bloomberg) -- AQR Capital Management's Cliff Asness says he's in agreement with famed short seller Jim Chanos when it comes to his criticism of Strategy founder Michael Saylor's claim that the use of convertible debt affords the leveraged Bitcoin proxy downside protection while continuing to accumulate the cryptocurrency. The critique is centered around whether there is 'recourse' for the company formally known as MicroStrategy Inc. to pay back holders of its convertible bonds, through which Strategy raised roughly $10 billion to fund Bitcoin purchases. While Saylor said this type of debt 'is not going to get called' and can be paid off with stock if the price of Bitcoin tumbles, both Asness and Chanos disagreed. In a Friday post on social media platform X, Asness said Chanos 'is of course right.' It is yet another twist as the back and forth between Chanos and Saylor is becoming a Wall Street battle for the ages. In separate Bloomberg interviews last week, Chanos said the Saylor's model to value the crypto-treasury firm is 'financial gibberish' while Saylor argued that Chanos just does not understand it. Earlier, Chanos recommended an arbitrage trade to short the shares of Strategy and buy Bitcoin, betting the large premium the stock commands over the value of its token holdings will shrink. Shares of Strategy were little changed on Friday, and have risen 27% so far this year. The stock had surged more than 3,000% since Saylor began buying Bitcoin in the middle of 2020.
