PM: Najib's DNAA is a judicial matter, I didn't interfere
PUCHONG: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim asserted that he had no involvement in the court's decision to discharge former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak of three money laundering charges involving RM27mil from SRC International Sdn Bhd.
'That is the judge's decision and the Attorney General's. I do not interfere,' the Prime Minister said briefly when approached by reporters after performing Friday prayers at the Kampung Sri Aman Mosque here yesterday.
Anwar was commenting on High Court judge Justice K. Muniandy granting a discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) to Najib yesterday following a request from the latter's defence team, Bernama reported.
The grounds given by the judge was that the prosecution lacked the preparedness to proceed with trial and that the case had been postponed too many times since 2019.
The court was informed that the prosecution had yet to obtain the necessary documentary evidence.
The delay, the judge noted, had denied the accused the right to a fair and timely resolution of the case.
A DNAA means the accused is temporarily discharged from the charges, but may still be prosecuted for the same offences in the future if the prosecution decides to reinstate them.
The current case, which was discharged yesterday, involves three charges of money laundering involving RM27mil, allegedly received through Najib's three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank Bhd, AmBank Group Building, Jalan Raja Chulan, on July 8, 2014.
Najib had on Feb 3, 2019, claimed trial to the charges under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, which carries a maximum fine of RM5mil, up to five years' imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.
The former Umno president is currently serving a jail term in Kajang Prison for another case of misappropriating RM42mil in SRC International funds.
On Sept 2, 2022, he filed a petition for a royal pardon. On Jan 29, 2024, the Pardons Board halved his jail sentence from 12 to six years and reduced his fine from RM210mil to RM50mil.

4.8 million Sara recipients use MyKad to buy essential items
GEORGE TOWN: A total of 4.8 million out of 5.4 million recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid have used their MyKad to purchase basic necessities at registered premises nationwide as of this month. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said Perlis recorded the highest usage rate at 94 per cent, followed by 93 per cent in Sabah and Kedah, while Penang recorded 88 per cent. She said the figures reflect the growing effectiveness of the initiative, supported by various awareness and promotional efforts at both federal and state levels. "The ministry will continue to strengthen awareness campaigns to ensure more people benefit from this government aid, which is aimed at easing their financial burden. "We have also significantly expanded the number of recipients from 700,000 to 5.4 million since April," she told reporters during a Sara outreach programme at a hypermarket here today. At the event, Lim met with 100 Sara recipients in Penang as part of the ministry's effort to engage directly with urban communities. She said to date, 3,700 retail premises have registered under the programme nationwide, enabling recipients to shop closer to home. In Penang alone, 190 such premises are available. Lim added that since May 1, the programme was enhanced by expanding the list of eligible items to 14 categories, including household and personal hygiene products, medicines, and school supplies like uniforms and shoes. The maximum Sara aid for 2025 has been raised to RM2,100 from RM1,200 — a 75 per cent increase, she said. Couple held for series of housebreaking, robbery cases since January
MELAKA: Police have arrested a couple suspected of involvement in seven housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka and neighbouring states since January. Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the unemployed couple, aged 24 and 31, were arrested in Kuala Kurau, Perak, on June 4. "On May 28, police received two reports involving housebreaking and robbery in the Melaka Tengah district, linked to the couple. "Their modus operandi included targeting homestays and stealing various electrical appliances and furniture," he said in a statement today. Initial investigations found they were involved in three housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka Tengah, and four others in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Various items were seized, including electrical appliances, furniture, a gold bracelet, two cars, five pawnshop receipts, and five mobile phones. The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and Section 392 for robbery. In a separate development, Christopher said a clothing dealer was arrested for allegedly firing a shot from an air pistol at Jalan Johor, Semabok, on June 8. "Following intelligence gathering and a public tip-off, the 35-year-old suspect was arrested in Puchong, Selangor, on June 17. Police also seized a black bag, a silver-black air pistol bearing the inscription Pietro Beretta Gardone V.T., a speed loader, and 30 ball-bearing bullets. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until June 23 to assist in the investigation under Section 33 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief.
