Urbana seeking Emergency Roof Repair Grant program applicants

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Urbana is accepting applications for its Emergency Roof Repair Grant program while funds last.
The city's Grants Management Division is seeking applicants for this program, which aims to repair hazardous or damaged roofing conditions for owner-occupied units, especially those that have conditions that pose a threat to the safety of the occupants in the home.
Champaign Park District moving forward with pickleball complex, more projects
This grant distributes a maximum of $15,000 per project. Additionally, these grants are given out to eligible households on a first-come, first-serve basis while the funds are still available.
This specific program is funded through the American Rescue Plan Act, and the funds received must be expended by the end of the 2026 calendar year.
In order to qualify for the program, applicants have to own and have lived in the home to be repaired for a minimum of one year, have homeowners' insurance and have a total household income of a maximum of 80% of the area median family income as determined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Crews working to reduce flooding in Birmingham's Highland Park neighborhood

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Crews have started working on historic flooding issues in Highland Park, according to the city of Birmingham on Wednesday. Drainage improvements are expected to reduce the flooding problems on 26th Street South and Caldwell Park. The initial work will be along 26th Street South between Red Mountain Expressway and 10th Avenue South. The project will end at Highland Avenue. Construction is expected to continue until summer 2026. Birmingham's City Walk in need of a sustainable funding source The city stated those driving in the area should anticipate delays. Those living and working in the affected area will receive updates as the project continues. The city estimated the project will cost $5.9 million, with money coming from the city's capital budget and American Rescue Plan Act funds. Iroquois County to retest warning sirens next week after sirens fail to sound

WATSEKA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Iroquois County EMA will be retesting all sirens across the county this upcoming Monday after the normal monthly test didn't go as planned. Coordinator for the county EMA Scott Anderson said in a press release Friday that following the regular monthly test of the warning sirens throughout the county, it was discovered that all the sirens — except for those in Watseka — failed to sound. As a result, all the sirens in the county will be re-tested between 10 a.m. and noon on June 9.
