IMSA Watkins Glen results, points: Acura wins again as Blomqvist saves just enough juice
Stretching his hybrid battery to the aboslute limit when a rival couldn't, Tom Blomqvist took the lead on the last lap to win the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar race at Watkins Glen International. Blomqvist's No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-06 crossed the finish line with less than 1% of its battery power reamining and finished 1.880 seconds ahed of the No. 40 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac. The No. 10 WTR Cadillac finished third. 'The guys gave me a target, and we were able to execute,' Blomqvist told NBC Sports' Dave Burns on Peacock. 'The car came alive there. I knew we just needed a bit space. We were able to capitalize on a couple of restarts. The guys did a great strategy and the pace was set to be able to hit those really big fuel targets ,and that's what enabled me to go to the end and the others not. IMSA WATKINS GLEN RESULTS: Click here for overall l By class 'So really proud of everyone. It was an up-and-down race for us. We had a few mistakes here at the beginning, but we made the most of it there at the end, so I'm so happy for the guys. It's been a really tough year. We haven't really had what we believe we deserve.' Earl Bamber had been in the lead on a restart with 3 minutes remaining, but his No. 31 Cadillac finished fifth after being forced to make a pit stop when its battery expired just before taking the white flag. Just before the last restart, Nick Yelloly also had pitted from second in the No. 93 MSR Acura. That had Blomqvist's co-driver, Colin Braun, nervous atop the Meyer Shank Racing pit stand. 'Tom did a great job there at the end saving the fuel,' Braun said. 'Man, the guys on the pit box were sweating bullets up there, but they made it happen there, so I'm pumped.' With the No. 93 's May 31 victory at Detroit, Meyer Shank Racing's Acuras have won two consecutive races after Porsche Penske Motorsport opened the 2025 season with four wins. 'The guys have really stepped it up,' Blomqvist said. 'We're just getting better and better every race, so hopefully more to come.' The No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 finished fourth to move into the championship lead by 12 points over the No. 7 963, which finished a season-worst 47th. After a promising start in which Felipe Nasr moved from 10th to the lead, things went awry when Nick Tandy went into the Turn 1 wall with just over 90 minutes remaining. The No. 7 Porsche 963 required major repairs that cost the team more than 10 laps in the pits. Hall of Fame trainer Lukas ill, won't return to racing: Churchill Downs
Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who saddled four Kentucky Derby winners among his 15 winners of US Triple Crown races, has been hospitalized with a severe infection and won't return to training, his family told Churchill Downs on Sunday. In a release posted on its website, the Louisville track that hosts the Kentucky Derby said the horses in the 89-year-old Lukas's care had been transferred to veteran assistant Sebastian Nicholl. Advertisement "According to the family, Lukas, 89, has battled a severe infection that has worsened his condition," Churchill Downs said on its website. Lukas "has declined an aggressive treatment plan" and will soon return home to spend his remaining time with his wife, Laurie, and other family members." Lukas is one of the most accomplished trainers in US racing history. His 15 Triple Crown victories are second only to Bob Baffert's 17 and he is tied with Ireland's Aidan O'Brien for most Breeders' Cup wins for a trainer with 20. He saddled his most recent Triple Crown race winner last year with Seize the Grey in the Preakness -- his seventh Preakness triumph. Advertisement "Wayne is one of the greatest competitors and most important figures in Thoroughbred racing history," Churchill Downs president Mike Anderson said. "He transcended the sport of horse racing and took the industry to new levels. "The lasting impact of his character and wisdom, from his acute horsemanship to his unmatched attention to detail, will be truly missed. "The enormity of this news is immense, and our prayers are with his family and friends around the world during this difficult time." During a career spanning six decades, Lukas amassed 4,967 documented Thoroughbred wins and his horses earned more than $301 million from 30,607 starts, including 1,105 stakes wins of which 637 were graded stakes. Advertisement Nicholl, an Englishman who has worked with Lukas since January 2002, said Lukas's legacy "will never be matched. "Every decision I make, every horse I saddle, I'll hear his voice in the back of my mind," Nicholl said. "This isn't about filling his shoes -- no one can -- it's about honoring everything that he has built." bb/js

Advertisement Lukas is affectionately known around the barns and the racetrack as 'Coach' because he coached high school basketball before his professional career with horses began. Even with months to go before his 90th birthday, he would get up on his pony in the early morning hours and go out to the track himself, rather than letting his assistants do the day-to-day work. Born Darnell Wayne Lukas on Sept. 2, 1935, in Wisconsin as the second of three children, he rose to prominence in the sport with quarter horses in races that are effectively sprints. He moved into thoroughbreds in the late 1970s and won his first Preakness with Codex in 1980. Lukas has 4,967 documented victories in thoroughbred racing, with his horses earning more than $310 million from more than 30,600 starts.
