Ethan Walker's strong bullpen outing leads Kentucky past USC Upstate 7-3 at the Clemson Regional
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Luke Lawrence went 3 for 4 with a run scored, Ethan Walker only allowed one hit in five innings of relief and Kentucky beat USC Upstate 7-3 on Saturday at the Clemson Regional.
Kentucky (30-25) moves on to take on the loser of the Clemson-West Virginia matchup in an elimination game on Sunday. The first trip to the NCAA Tournament for USC Upstate (36-25) came to an end.
Kentucky starter Nic McCay allowed three earned runs in the fourth as USC Upstate tied it at 3.
Walker (2-1) struck out the side in the sixth and Kentucky retook the lead in the bottom half on a bunt by Patrick Herrera for a well-executed squeeze play.
Kentucky added three runs in the eighth. Lawrence singled for the third time, stole second and scored an insurance run on Cole Hage's single through the left side. Then Hudson Brown singled with the bases loaded to score two on his first hit of the tournament.
Walker did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the ninth. He finished with seven strikeouts, two in the ninth, and only allowed three base runners.
Carson Hansen hammered an opposite field three-run homer in the first for Kentucky. James McCoy went 2 for 2 to tie his career-best eight-game hit streak.
Upstate reliever Darin Kuskie (5-2) allowed three earned runs in two innings.

'We had a lot of things going our way,' Earnhardt said. Earnhardt — who won NASCAR's most-popular driver award 15 times — made a pit stop from his day job as team owner at JR Motorsports with normal crew chief Mardy Lindley suspended one race because of a lug nut infraction this month at Nashville. Aside from his duties as team owner, Earnhardt also was at Pocono for his role on the Prime broadcast for the NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday. 'Lot of fun for me today,' Earnhardt said. 'I missed the thrill of competition. I love broadcast, don't get me wrong. But nothing compares to driving or just being part of the team. Being an owner doesn't really deliver like this. This is a lot of fun.' Earnhardt had his wife and two young daughters in tow with him as he made the celebratory walk to victory lane. Oldest daughter Isla Rose clutched the checkered flag while youngest Nicole Lorraine soaked in the scene from her dad's arms. AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a 4-under 66 on Saturday for a share of the lead with Steven Alker in the Kaulig Companies Championship, the third major of the year on the PGA Tour Champions. Seeking his four victory of the year, Jimenez played a five-hole stretch in the middle of the round at Firestone South in 4 under, making birdies on Nos. 7-8 and 10-11. The 61-year-old Spanish star dropped a stroke on the par-3 12th, then parred the final six holes. Alker, tied for the second-round lead, had a 67 to match Jimenez at 8-under 202. Jimenez won the Trophy Hassan II in February in Morocco, the Hoag Classic in March in Newport Beach, California, and the Principal Charity Classic in a playoff three weeks ago in Des Moines, Iowa. He has 16 career victories on the 50-and-over tour. Alker birdied the par-4 17th to pull even with Jimenez, then made a 5-footer for par on the par-4 18th after missing the green long and left.
