HIV-positive man welcomes Berkshire hospital A&E blood testing

BBC News10-03-2025

A man living with HIV believes a new initiative to test people for the virus when they visit A&E will help save lives.Patients aged 16 and over who receive blood tests while at Royal Berkshire Hospital's (RBH) emergency department will also be checked for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.The hospital in Reading is in a "high-prevalence" area for the blood-borne viruses, and has become one of 47 across the country running the opt-out tests.Allan, from Maidenhead, said because he was diagnosed early, effective medication meant the virus was now undetectable and not transmittable.
'I thought my life was over'
Speaking about his HIV-positive status publicly for the first time, Allan wants to challenge the stigma around it."I can understand some of the ignorance, because I myself was ignorant until I got it and I learned a little bit more about it", he said."Initially it affected me a lot because I isolated and I thought my life was over."But now he said the virus has minimal impact on his life, and only crosses his mind when he takes his medication. He said: "It's the people that don't know they've got HIV that are the ones that pass it around, unknowingly."Once you know then you can do something about it. Why would you not want to know?"
The scheme has also been expanded to other hospitals across the south, including Southampton General Hospital, Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole Hospital, and Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.Patients can opt-out of the additional checks by telling a member of A&E staff. But RBH consultant physician Dr Alan Tang hopes most will realise the benefits of having their HIV status checked for free and confidentially."I think people are not diagnosed partly because they think they are low risk or have no risk at all," he said."So we looking at people who have no idea they could have been HIV infected, and therefore they could pass it on and become sick."
Rise in heterosexual referrals
The most recent NHS data, from 2023, showed a 15% rise in HIV cases across England, up from 2,451 to 2,810.Sarah Macadam, CEO of Thames Valley Positive Support, expects the A&E testing will lead to an increase in demand for the Slough-based HIV charity."We're aware that more people will be diagnosed with HIV and therefore more people will need our support," she said."The highest rise in new referrals for us, is heterosexual people - that's the biggest group that we see coming through our doors in need of support having been diagnosed."
Consultant microbiologist at RBH, Dr George Jacob, said even though HIV was not curable, it was very treatable with early detection and diagnosis."With HIV and hepatitis B, there's very good anti-viral treatment available that can suppress the disease, enable patients with the infection to live long, productive lives, with very limited complications," he said. The government said it wants to end new HIV transmissions in England by 2030.

You've probably heard about microdosing weight loss jabs, but now this same A-list trick has hit the haircare market. Microdosing, using small amounts of a product, is the latest trend when it comes to boosting midlife hair. As we know, volume vanishes from all the wrong places as we age and, sadly, that includes once-luxurious locks, which might become thinner, flat and dull looking.

'I'm a gut health scientist - what I eat daily is tasty and boosts weight loss'

Jordan Haworth, a gut health scientist who is known as Mr Gut Health online, has shared what he eats in a day to support his gut health and weight loss Our digestive system, often referred to as our guts, is crucial for digesting food, absorbing nutrients, and expelling waste. It's vital to look after our guts, which are instrumental in breaking down what we eat so that the body can produce the necessary chemicals for proper functioning. Studies have shown that gut health can influence both our physical and mental wellbeing. Connections have been made between the gut and various aspects of health including the immune system, autoimmune diseases, heart disease, cancer, and more. ‌ A gut health expert has divulged his dietary habits, adhering to the Mediterranean diet, renowned for bolstering gut health and offering additional perks like aiding weight management. ‌ The Mediterranean diet promotes a style of eating reflective of the culinary traditions of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, such as Spain and Greece. It favours a plethora of wholesome foods including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, seafood, legumes, and nuts. Jordan Haworth, known online as Mr Gut Health, is an experienced gut health scientist with over seven years under his belt. Revealing his daily intake as a "full time gut health scientist", Jordan begins with ginger and turmeric shots to "kick start the old immune system". Research suggests that the combination of ginger and turmeric could help diminish inflammation and pain, enhance immunity, and guard against chronic illnesses. The Manchester-based scientist kicked off his day with a spoonful of Psyllium jelly to "detox his gut". In an earlier video, Jordan demonstrated how he concocted the "gut health jelly" using just three ingredients. He mixed three teaspoons of Psyllium husk with 150ml of pressed juice such as grape, and a dash of lime to "make it sour". After letting it chill in the fridge for 10 minutes, it was ready to go. Jordan touted it as a "low calorie prebiotic jelly" packed with 12g of fibre to "keep you full". ‌ For breakfast, he tucked into a bowl of 5% Greek yoghurt, citing that the "fat in dairy is good for your brain". However, he didn't share any of the additional ingredients he might have thrown in. Alongside this, Jordan enjoyed some green tea and walnuts, which he also hailed as "good for your brain". ‌ Green tea is renowned for its potential health benefits, including bolstering cognition and aiding weight management. Walnuts, on the other hand, are a fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, boasting anti-inflammatory properties. Come lunchtime, Jordan whipped up a chicken and chickpea pasta salad, praising it as a great source of fibre. He dressed it with extra virgin olive oil, a cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, and tossed in extras like cucumber, tomatoes, olives and feta cheese. After downing a matcha energy drink to keep him fuelled, Jordan sat down to dinner: a watermelon feta salad paired with "fresh, crispy mackerel" and potato wedges. He rounded off the day with a pair of kiwis. Kiwis, packed with vitamin C and dietary fibre, are a fantastic choice. Some even suggest that consuming kiwi before going to bed can enhance your sleep quality, thanks to its serotonin content, a neurotransmitter instrumental in sleep regulation. Always seek advice from a GP or dietician prior to making significant alterations to your diet or embarking on a new eating regimen.

Ellis Jenkins, director at Expanding Horizons, said: "At Expanding Horizons, we care deeply about the quality of care our service users receive. "We seek to not only support individuals but empower them to be the best versions of themselves. "The fact that so many people in Wales are living with disabilities and severe mental illness underscores the critical need for tailored support which helps them gain or rebuild their independence. "Residents of South Wales deserve the highest quality of care, and we are thrilled to announce the acquisition of Enable Care Services as we continue to grow and expand our network. "NatWest has been exceptional throughout the process, demonstrating a deep understanding of our industry and our goals and we are incredibly grateful for their support." The deal includes two care homes in Cwmbran and one in Argoed. Expanding Horizons provides personalised support for people with learning disabilities and severe mental illnesses. The company marks its 20th anniversary this year. The expansion is aimed at meeting the rising demand for residential and supported living services across South Wales. According to Public Health Network Cymru, around 900,000 people in Wales live with a disability. This represents 27 per cent of the population, compared to the UK average of 22 per cent. Neil Williams, senior relationship manager at NatWest, said: "The work that Expanding Horizons does is absolutely invaluable to its service users and is the exact sort of community benefit that we look to support at NatWest. "We look forward to continuing our partnership and are excited to witness Expanding Horizon's continued growth and evolution." Expanding Horizons said the acquisition will improve its ability to deliver high-quality care across the region. The company currently operates a portfolio of care homes and supported living services in South Wales.
