Royal Challengers Bengaluru to play another IPL final: What's different for RCB this time? These 5 things

Mint03-06-2025

Royal Challengers Bengaluru reaching the IPL final again has created huge excitement. It's been an 18-year wait for them. Now, fans are asking, 'What's different this time?'
This season, many key changes and strong performances suggest that 2025 could finally be the year for RCB.
RCB have always been led by seasoned international cricketers. In the previous 3 finals, Bengaluru were helmed by Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori and Virat Kohli, respectively. This time, however, Rajat Patidar will lead them in the IPL 2025 final.
Patidar is still awaiting his T20I debut for Team India. He has played only 1 ODI and 3 Test matches. Though new to captaincy, he has impressed with his calm nature and strong performance. His mix of team unity and individual focus is working.
RCB made history this season by winning all away matches in the league stage. No other team managed to do it before in IPL. They even broke old losing streaks at Chepauk (vs CSK) and Eden Gardens (vs KKR).
This shows their strong mindset and ability to handle tough conditions. This will give them confidence ahead of the final in neutral Ahmedabad.
This season, RCB are not just about Virat Kohli. While Kohli has hit 8 fifties, others have stepped up too. Phil Salt gave fast starts, Patidar led well, Hazlewood shone with the ball and Suyash impressed as a spinner.
With nine different Player of the Match winners, RCB now look like a complete team. Gone are the days when they depended on stars only.
RCB reached the final with a powerful win in Qualifier 1 against Punjab Kings. They bowled PBKS out for just 101 and chased the target in only 10 overs, winning by 8 wickets.
RCB have always been about confidence and aggression. But, that big win further enhanced their morale. Unlike IPL 2016's close Qualifier 1, this one was complete domination, that too against the table toppers.
RCB showed remarkable composure in pressure games this season. They chased 228 against LSG, thanks to RCB debutant Jitesh Sharma. After Kohli's dismissal in the 12th over, Sharma – who hardly had had insignificant contributions with the bat before this – did not panic. His unbeaten 85 off 33 balls took RCB home.
Bengaluru edged past CSK by 2 runs in a last-over thriller at Chepauk. It was their first win against Chennai at the venue since 2008. Their strong mindset was clear in tough 'do-or-die' league matches this year.

Jofra Archer To Make Comeback In IND vs ENG 2nd Test? Heres What We Know

England may be about to unleash one of their most lethal weapons as reports suggest Jofra Archer could return for the second Test against India at Edgbaston on July 2. The 30-year-old fast bowler, whose career has been plagued by injuries, is reportedly set to make his red-ball comeback for Sussex in their County Championship match against Durham beginning June 22. Although Archer's name was initially absent from Sussex's official 12-man squad, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed he will be traveling with the team to Chester-le-Street — a quiet move believed to be aimed at avoiding media attention. Also Read: Rishabh Pant To Get Banned? ICC Investigates Heated Ball Change Outburst During IND vs ENG Headingley Test The Barbados-born pacer last played first-class cricket in May 2021, a match he couldn't complete due to a recurring right elbow injury. Since then, Archer has been restricted to white-ball formats, featuring in the 2025 IPL season for Rajasthan Royals before a thumb injury sidelined him once again. This injury also kept him out of the first Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, which India dominated with a 471-run first innings at Headingley. Concerns peaked when Sussex left Archer out of their official squad announcement on Saturday. But England selector Luke Wright later clarified the omission was a mistake, reaffirming Archer's inclusion in the travelling party and his readiness to play — barring any last-minute setbacks. England's Bowling Crisis Deepens The return of Jofra Archer couldn't come at a more critical juncture. England's pace attack, led by Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes, looked toothless in the series opener. With Mark Wood still recovering from knee surgery and James Anderson being rested, the team is lacking firepower against a confident Indian batting lineup led by new skipper Shubman Gill. Archer's presence could offer England the aggressive edge they desperately need. His ability to extract pace and bounce, even from docile surfaces, makes him a match-winner in red-ball cricket. In 13 Tests, he has taken 42 wickets, and if he proves his fitness this week, he's expected to walk back into the playing XI for Edgbaston or potentially the third Test at Lord's from July 10. Ben Stokes and the Archer Connection England captain Ben Stokes has long expressed his desire to see Archer back in whites. Speaking earlier this month, Stokes said: 'Randomly, a couple of times he would just send me a text... I was like, 'Let's just hold it there. I know you're in a good spot right now but let's not rush it.'' Stokes emphasized how Archer's long list of injuries has been mentally and physically draining for the player, but also shared optimism: 'It's really exciting for England — but even more so for Jof — that he's finally in a position where we can plan a proper return.' The Verdict: Will Archer Play the 2nd Test? While Archer's fitness remains the ultimate variable, the signs are promising. If he completes the County match unscathed, England's selectors are likely to fast-track his return to Test cricket. With the Ashes 2025 looming, building match fitness and confidence will be crucial — and a high-profile series against India is the perfect proving ground. Until then, England fans will watch Sussex's game at Chester-le-Street closely, hoping to see Jofra Archer in rhythm, pain-free, and ready to don the England whites once again.

IND vs ENG: Sanjay Manjrekar forgets Virat Kohli as Shubman Gill's celebration sparks déjà vu!- Watch

Sanjay Manjrekar, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli Shubman Gill , India's new Test captain, displayed intense emotions reminiscent of Virat Kohli 's leadership style during Day 2 of the first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy match against England at Headingley on June 22, 2025. The 24-year-old captain celebrated animatedly when Mohammed Siraj appeared to dismiss Joe Root , though the decision was later overturned on DRS review. Gill also marked his captaincy debut with a century, becoming the fifth Indian captain to achieve this feat. The celebration moment caught the attention of the commentary box, particularly former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar , who drew parallels between Gill's passionate display and previous Indian captains. Captain Gill, we are seeing this version for the first time. His celebration… it reminded me of someone, but I'm struggling to place it. MS Dhoni never celebrated like that from mid-on, and it's definitely not Rohit Sharma 's style. Could be a No. 4 batter... My third guess would be Ajit Wadekar," Manjrekar said during commentary. The incident occurred when Siraj bowled to Root, and the umpire raised his finger. Gill charged toward Siraj in celebration, pointing with purpose. However, the celebration proved premature as Root's review showed the ball had missed the edge, leading to the decision being overturned. Gill's century in his first Test as captain placed him in an elite group of Indian cricketers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lékař varuje: 'Hlavní příčina velkého břicha nemá nic společného s kaloriemi …' Dozvědět se víc Undo He joined the ranks of Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli, Vijay Hazare, and Dilip Vengsarkar, who all scored centuries in their debut matches as Test captain. Gill's century made him the 23rd player in Test cricket history to score a hundred in their first match as captain. He also became the fourth-youngest player to achieve this feat, following Herbie Taylor, Alastair Cook, and Steve Smith. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? The transformation in Gill's on-field demeanor, from his typically calm batting style to an energetic captain, sparked discussions in the commentary box, with experts like Navjot Singh Sidhu and Varun Aaron joining the conversation.
