Blinkit workers in Varanasi go on strike over fair pay and heat safety measures

The Hindu29-04-2025

Blinkit workers in Varanasi who went on strike to demand fair pay and safer working conditions during India's extreme summer heat had their IDs blocked by the platform, claimed the Gig & Platform Service Workers Union (GIPSWU).
About 150 Blinkit workers in Shri Ram Colony, Varanasi, went on strike on April 26, per the union. Their demands included an end to mandatory work between 12 PM and 4 PM due to the extreme heat, the provision of shaded waiting areas with drinking water and fans, and cotton uniforms for the summer.
'On April 27, 2025, a company representative threatened the striking workers with police action and demanded they sign affidavits vowing to never strike again. The workers remain resolute in their demands,' said GIPSWU on its website.
The union claimed that Blinkit management blocked the IDs of around 150 workers, due to their strike.
#Blinkit has blocked IDs of 150 workers for exercising their constitutional right ofvgoing on strike to demand:
-An end to mandatory work between 12-4 pm.
-Shaded waiting areas with drinking water, and fans.
-Cotton uniforms for the summer.#WorldDayforSafetyandHealthatWorkpic.twitter.com/uAmPEkOW0e — Gig & Platfrom Services Workers Union GIPSWU (@GIPSWU_) April 28, 2025
GIPSWU called the move 'unconstitutional' and shared photos and videos of the striking workers, who are seen chanting in Hindi, 'Fulfill our demands, stop our exploitation, and long live labour unions!'
As India heads into a scorching hot summer, gig workers and quick commerce delivery professionals who travel long distances by bike in high temperatures face the risk of heat-related health conditions or even heat death.
'All over the world, gig workers are expected to rush through extreme heat, rain, and snow with no breaks for food or water or bathroom... all for a 10 minute delivery...' said GIPSWU in a post.
Blinkit is yet to officially respond to the strike.

Nalanda University adds 4 new PG courses, V-C says reinforcing its role as centre of high learning

Nalanda University Vice-Chancellor Sachin Chaturvedi has announced four new postgraduate courses in economics, hindi, mathematics and philosophy, taking the total PG programmes to 12. Chaturvedi, who is also the Director General of Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), joined as the university's V-C last month. He said, 'Expansion of courses are meant to expand academic scope and reinforce NU's role as a premier centre of research and high learning.' The new courses are in consonance with the blended vision of ancient and new Nalanda universities to focus on mathematics and philosophy. Meanwhile, Hindi has been added as part of the Central government's thrust to promote mother tongue, and economics is added as per the V-C's vision. 'The spirit of Nalanda has evolved as a vibrant expression of continuous engagement with eternal values and the civilisational ethos of the east. It embodies a rich intellectual tradition, marked by openness, inclusivity and a globally oriented outlook. Building upon this legacy, the vision for the new Nalanda is shaped by a forward-looking blueprint rooted in integrative wisdom. It draws inspiration from an eastern worldview in which faith, intellectual inquiry and material well-being are not regarded in isolation, but as deeply interwoven dimensions of holistic human existence.' The previous PG courses included historical studies, ecology and environment studies, Buddhist studies, comparative religions, Hindu studies (Sanatana Dharma), world literature, archaeology, international relations and peace studies, and MBA in sustainable development and management. NU, established under Nalanda University Act, 2010, started functioning from 2014 with two PG courses having only 12 students. PM Narendra Modi formally inaugurated NU campus — spread over 455 acres at Rajgir foothills — last year. Santosh Singh is a Senior Assistant Editor with The Indian Express since June 2008. Banks must protect govt incentive funds from loan deductions: Melukote MLA

Mandya: Melukote MLA Darshan Puttannaiah urged that bank managers write to their central offices requesting the installation of software that prevents govt incentive funds from being deducted for loan repayments. Once a loan is taken from a bank, the EMI amount is automatically deducted from the account on the scheduled date each month, he said. Speaking at a meeting with various bank managers at the DC's office here, he said when the govt provides incentive funds to farmers or citizens, and they are automatically adjusted towards loan EMIs, people have to visit the bank and request a reversal to their subsidy accounts. However, only about 3% of the population have the capacity to approach banks and raise such issues, which is why a software solution is essential. He emphasized that banks function because of customers. Many poor farmers in rural areas are bank customers, and bank staff must treat them with respect. Deputy commissioner Kumara said various govt-provided benefits—like social pensions, milk incentives, Anna Bhagya, Gruha Lakshmi funds, MGNREGA wages, and crop loss compensation—should not be deducted for loan repayments, out of humanitarian concern. He urged the bank staff to communicate in Kannada, especially since Mandya is a district of farmers. Though many bank officials and managers know Kannada, they often speak in English or Hindi. This attitude must change, he said. He also pointed out the scheme that offers a 3% interest rebate to farmers who repay their crop loans within the stipulated time, and asked the banks to make farmers aware of this benefit.

Myntra launches quick commerce service in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai: How it is different from Blinkit, Zepto and others

Myntra has rolled out its "M-Now" 30-minute delivery service to Delhi-NCR and Mumbai, following a successful pilot in Bengaluru, a report has said. Unlike Blinkit, Zepto and other food-related quick commerce platforms, M-Now will specifically focus on delivering clothes, including from premium brands, in 30-minutes. Notably, Blinkit and Zepto also deliver some basic apparels such as tees and shorts. The M-Now service, first trialed in Bengaluru last December with around 10,000 SKUs, now offers collections from nearly 600 brands. Customers in the expanded zones can now get rapid delivery on items from popular names like Vero Moda, Mango, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Levi's and even luxury beauty and accessory brands such as Dyson, YSL, Prada, Carolina Herrera, and Huda Beauty, as per a report by The Economic Times. Myntra CEO Nandita Sinha had previously indicated the company's plans to bring the service to Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. She noted a "significant demand from fashion-first and trend-focused premium customers for quick deliveries." Compre já Undo Myntra's move is part of a larger trend in India's e-commerce landscape, where fashion platforms like Ajio and Nykaa, along with new-age brands such as Newme, Slikk and Blip, are all exploring ultra-fast delivery. This momentum was initially sparked by quick commerce pioneers like Blinkit, Instamart, and Zepto, who expanded beyond groceries to include fashion and apparel from brands like Jockey, Manyavar, Puma, and Adidas. The report also pointed out the challenges, saying that one key hurdle is customer behaviour. As per as Snitch founder Siddharth Dungarwal, while initial interest in fast delivery is high, shoppers often revert to purchasing only basic wardrobe essentials like black t-shirts or shirts through these services.
