VinFast tweaks sales plan ahead of its India debut
VinFast
has recalibrated its India sales plans ahead of the launch of its
electric SUVs
scheduled for the upcoming festive season. The Vietnamese company has pared its sales volume target for the first year of launch by a third to 3,000 units, even as it continues to evaluate the method of CKD (completely knocked down) assembly for the V7 and V6 models.
The company is also set to delay the launch of these models by a month due to an underdeveloped sales network, according to people aware of the company's plans.
Production at VinFast's facility at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu-originally scheduled to begin on June 30-has been pushed back to July 30. Consequently, bookings for the
VF7 and VF6 models
will open in mid-July, with customer deliveries expected by mid-August.
An email sent to the company on Tuesday seeking comment remained unanswered till the time of going to press on Sunday.
"VinFast's full-fledged plans will unfold only next year when they introduce the VF 3, the company's affordable SUV. This year will mostly be about making an entry and testing the market," said one of the people cited above.
The delay is being attributed to a fledgling distribution strategy and lack of network readiness. After the

in January, VinFast appointed dealers for 40 locations. However, a majority of them have since withdrawn their letters of intent (LoIs), citing the company's inconsistent approach to distribution planning, pricing, and product positioning, the people said. As of now, only eight to ten dealers remain, they said.
"There was a lot of back and forth. They do not seem to have clarity on how many sales touchpoints to have, what price point to launch the models at, and how many units to sell. We couldn't commit investment with this lack of clarity," said a dealer principal who withdrew the LoI a couple of months ago.
"Since the auto show, VinFast hasn't done much on brand activation. Most are unaware of the brand in India," said another dealer who also opted out.
Ashish Jain, the executive in charge of network development, seems to have resigned, said some of the people cited earlier.
Jain did not respond to ET's message seeking comment and phone calls.
VinFast has built a 400-acre integrated EV manufacturing facility with an annual capacity of 50,000 units in Tamil Nadu. At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, the company showcased a range of models it plans to launch in India, including the VF 3, VF 7, VF 9, and VF e34 SUVs.
Electric car adoption in India continues to grow steadily. In May 2025, electric passenger vehicles accounted for 4.1% of the industry car sales, up from 3.5% in April and 2.6% in the same month last year, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations.

Contract maker Zetwerk set to pump Rs 500–800 crore for component making
Zetwerk is looking to pump in Rs 500–800 crore as the Bengaluru-based unicorn embarks on manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCBs), enclosures and electromechanical components such as heat sinks and sensors, said its co-founder Rahul Sharma 'We are very excited about the component PLI (production-linked incentive) and have seen a lot of traction,' he told ET. While the application for the government's PLI scheme is being prepared, Zetwerk has forged technology tie-ups with companies in Taiwan and is eyeing setting up manufacturing plants over the next one year. 'We are in talks with a Taiwanese company for PCBs and have gotten into a definitive agreement with them," Sharma said. "We are also speaking to a South Korean company. And for products like enclosures, we are partnering with an Indian company since that capability already exists here. Within enclosures, we are looking at enclosures for laptops and non-Apple mobile brands and products." Once we receive the necessary government approvals, we will move forward with these partnerships,' he said. Once the necessary approvals are obtained, Zetwerk would set up the manufacturing units, Sharma said. 'We are already present in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka with plants in the electronics sector. Now, with the component PLI, we would be setting up new plants and are in close talks with a few of the state governments,' he said. While Sharma did not name the states that Zetwerk was engaging with, he said none of them had reached a definitive agreement yet. He also said that segments like electromechanical components, unlike PCBs, can be housed within the existing units. 'PCBs cannot be stationed at the same place where our existing EMS (electronic manufacturing services) factories are stationed,' he said. 'It will definitely be in a different place because it has different requirements for polishing control, power and other factors. Same goes for enclosures where we don't have to have these facilities situated in our existing clusters." Sharma further said, 'We have also hired one of the big four firms to help us prepare an application which is suitable for the government to evaluate.'

DGCA to kickstart inspection of Air India's main hub
New Delhi: The civil aviation regulator will conduct a comprehensive review of Air India 's main base in Gurugram from Monday. The exercise, which was planned before the airline's plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, entails checking the carrier's records of aircraft and whether they are airworthy, along with training and duty period records of the flight crew, according to a document seen by ET. The inspection is part of the annual surveillance programme of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and not triggered by the crash, said a senior DGCA official, who did not wish to be identified. It comes at a time when regulatory scrutiny of Air India's operations has increased following the crash. The DGCA has asked its inspectors to provide details of all inspections and audits conducted on Air India since 2024. The DGCA has also revamped its audit procedure to make it more comprehensive. The revamp comes in the wake of the crash of Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft in Ahmedabad which killed 241 people on board and more than 30 on the ground. Live Events "Traditionally, regulatory and safety oversight functions within Indian aviation have been conducted in silos, performing inspections and audits specific to their respective domains. These activities include planned or unplanned surveillance inspections, random spot checks and ramp inspections, which primarily assess compliance and safety within individual aviation segments," the DGCA said in a notice, a copy of which was seen by ET. The new framework marks a paradigm shift, aiming to evaluate the aviation ecosystem holistically, moving away from fragmented oversight models, it said. The audits will examine three broad areas - the effectiveness of an organisation's Safety Management System, the robustness of its operational practices and its compliance with regulatory provisions. A senior official of the DGCA said these special audits will be conducted by officials with expertise in different areas such as air safety, airworthiness of aircraft, training standards of crew and air navigation. The exercise will be conducted periodically for all airlines, airports, aircraft maintenance organisations and pilot training schools. "A serious incident or a crash or continuous non-compliance may trigger this audit but it will also be done periodically, giving prior notice to the company," the official said. On Sunday, Air India said that it will temporarily reduce 118 weekly flights operated with narrow-body aircraft across 19 routes and suspend operations on three routes.

ASEAN co-chair rebukes Piyush Goyal over 'B-team of China' remark
New Delhi: The Asean co-chair for the review of India FTA has expressed displeasure over commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal's recent remarks, describing several countries in the region as a "B team of China".
