Bolton schoolfriends' epic journey to pay tribute to those who died in the Great War

Yahoo12-05-2025

Four childhood friends are undertaking an epic journey to visit the war graves of fallen soldiers from their school.
Colin Higham, Kevan Ball and Rob Taylor will cycle 634 miles along the Western Front Way next month, with Russell Jones providing support.
The trail follows the historic frontline of the First World War, from the French-Swiss border to the beaches of Belgium.
The quartet, who will all turn 65 this year, met when they were schoolboys at Rivington and Blackrod School, and will visit the graves of 16 of the 24 young men from their old school who died during the war.
Colin Higham was struck by the idea after reading The Path of Peace: Walking the Western Front Way by Anthony Seldon.
He said: "I had read this book and we were all sat there saying what are we going to do now we are retiring.
"I had started cycling again with a local group, and was also involved in the school again, having been to the chapel for a service and seeing the names of the fallen soldiers in the stained glass windows.

"The lads involved have stayed in touch for many years, and they said let's do it. Every few years we get together."

They will leave home on June 2, before beginning the ride in Basel on June 4.
The quartet are also raising money for three charities - the Royal British Legion, Children in Need and St Ann's Hospice. To donate, click here: https://justgiving.com/crowdfunding/alan-parkinson

"We have found the fallen soldiers' graves and memorials and we intend to visit them and photograph it.
"We are also going to get the children at the school involved, they will be able to track us on a daily basis and we can send photographs.
"The graves are in historical PNS/JNS and we are quite excited about it."

Kevan Ball said: "This challenge is about more than just a cycle ride. It's a journey of remembrance, honouring the memory of local heroes and supporting vital charitable causes that continue to make a difference in our community."
Vicki Walmsley, Headmistress at Rivington and Blackrod High School, said: 'I am proud to support these ex-pupils undertaking this phenomenal cycle challenge, demonstrating the same courage and resilience as the brave Rivingtonians who made the ultimate sacrifice in WW1.
"The selfless efforts these lads are making, for the benefit of great causes, demonstrates the values that we have always aspired to at Rivington and Blackrod School for more than a hundred years and continue to strive for today.'

Potential record deal puts Elliott's name back in the headlines as Albion are linked

Harvey Elliott, pictured with Yasin Ayari, could be on the move (Image: Simon Dack) Harvey Elliott's name is being linked with Albion again – after Liverpool clinched a record deal. The champions' move for Florian Wirtz will set them back an initial £100 million. That will become a British record £116 million if various clauses are met. Advertisement It also appears to affect Elliott's potential to play significant minutes for the Reds. Albion were believed to be interested in Elliott during the January transfer window and probably before that. That might at least partly explain why The Sun report him to be of interest to the Seagulls in the current window. He would command a sizeable fee and comes with some uncertainty over what he can produce in the Premier League on a consistent basis. But Elliott, who is currently with England under-21s at the Euros, has shown plenty of promise. He scored for Liverpool at the Amex towards the end of the season. Advertisement There is no suggestion that Albion have bid for Elliott but there is a theory the presence of his former Anfield mentor James Milner could help persuade the 22-year-old to move. Albion have an array of options in attacking midfield areas but plenty of outward activity is expected during the summer transfer window.

Buggyra Academy France returns to home soil in Nogaro. Heat will be a challenge for everyone, says team boss Fabien Calvet

After a successful start to the season in the French truck racing championship, the drivers of Buggyra Academy France will compete on their home track in Nogaro. The academy is based in the southwest of France, where the team's headquarters are located. Monaco/France, June 20, 2025 -- Following a strong result in Le Castellet, the academy drivers have a lot to build on. In the overall standings, Téo Calvet is defending his lead, Raphaël Sousa is second, and José Sousa holds fourth place. 'Nogaro is one of the most important races for us because it is the home of Buggyra Academy France. All our French partners will be there, as well as our families and the people of Nogaro who support us. Even the mayor of the town will be present,' noted Fabien Calvet, head of Buggyra Academy France. 'Nogaro is also a major racing challenge because all our students train there throughout the year. José and Raphaël Sousa also know the circuit very well—they've done a lot of laps there. After the good result in Le Castellet, we need to confirm the strong form of Téo, the trucks, and the whole team,' added the academy boss. Reigning champion Téo Calvet is looking forward to Nogaro. 'I love this race. I love the people here and the atmosphere in southwestern France. Our preseason testing here in Nogaro went pretty well, but the races will definitely be tough and competitive. Of course, we'll try to deliver the best possible performance. I feel confident, but we still need to stay cautious, because others can surprise us,' said the French driver. 'This is the academy's home ground, so we'll hope for a good result for both José and Raphaël Sousa. We'll be working as a team. The Sousas race under the VTR banner. This year, I chose to partner with Jonathan André from Lyon. We're good friends and he used to be my engineer. From that perspective, it was a good way to rebuild the team,' explained Téo. Alongside the narrow track, another big challenge awaits the drivers this weekend. 'They're forecasting very high temperatures—over 40 degrees during the weekend. That will obviously be tough not only for the drivers but also for the mechanics,' said Fabien Calvet. The race weekend of the French championship consists of four races in total. On both days, the starting grid for the first race is determined by qualifying and the following Super Pole session. The second race, which offers fewer points, features a reversed grid for the top drivers. Fabrizio Romano confirms Serie A club Como 'have tried to sign' Man United's Antony 'in recent days'

Serie A outfit Serie A have made an attempt to sign Manchester United winger Antony over the past few days, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed. Antony failed to live up to the massive £86m fee United forked out to secure his services from Ajax in the summer of 2022. Advertisement He registered only 12 goals and five assists in 96 appearances for the Red Devils, but a short loan stint with Real Betis in Spain seems to have reignited his form. Antony enjoyed a dramatic improvement in fortunes under Manuel Pellegrini, notching 14 goals contributions in 26 appearances – just five shy of his entire United tally in nearly a quarter of the time. The Brazilian has made no secret of his desire to continue with Betis, who are also working to try and agree a deal with United. Such is Antony's eagerness to return to Seville that he is reportedly willing to accept a 30% pay cut to make the move happen. Advertisement But Los Verdiblancos are not the only club eyeing Antony. He has also been linked to Juventus, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid. A report covered by The Peoples Person earlier this week relayed that Antony is also of interest to Premier League teams, with Brentford and Aston Villa having enquired about the conditions of a transfer. But, they were told that his top priority is Betis. Now, Romano has revealed that a new club has entered the fray for the 25-year-old, Como. Romano wrote on X, 'Italian side Como have tried to sign Antony in the recent days but Brazilian winger is giving priority to Real Betis return.' Advertisement 'Man United are also aware of Antony's preference to continue at Betis next season, no club to club agreement yet.' If United are unable to strike a compromise with Betis, then the Red Devils can rest assured that there will be no shortage of suitors for the forward. Antony is not thought to have a future at Old Trafford. There have even been suggestions that Ruben Amorim will not include him in the club's pre-season squad.
