Sainsbury's shoppers 'gutted' as popular dessert range quietly axed

Sainsbury's shoppers have been told not to expect a popular dessert range to be seen in store any more. The news was confirmed after a curious shopper posed the question online and was told about the supermarket's decision.
Patisserie Valerie is a British café and bakery chain that sells cakes, pastries, and continental-style desserts. Sainsbury's and Patisserie Valerie partnered as early as 2017, and the company's cakes and gateaux were available in a handful of bakeries before rolling out to hundreds of stores nationwide.
It sold some of the brand's most popular treats, including the Salted Caramel and Chocolate Bombe, Strawberry Gateau and Baked Cheesecake Slice, alongside celebration cakes such as the Triple Chocolate Delight. But, the cakes are set to become non-existent, at least in supermarket stores.
A user called @Paigemwhitehead took to X to ask: "@Sainsburys do you still sell Patisserie Valerie range?" The official supermarket responded with: "Hi there, unfortunately, this range has been discontinued."
Another shopper also found out that the dessert range was being scrapped from stores. They wrote: "Oh no! The Patisserie Valerie counter in Sainsbury's has gone! #gutted"
Searching on the Sainsbury's website offers no results for the sweet treats. If you do manage to find the page via Google, the cakes are listed as 'out of stock'.
However, shoppers do not have to miss out completely. Patisserie Valerie runs standalone cafés and delivers cakes across the UK through its online service. However, the convenience of popping into your local Sainsbury's will no longer be an option.
The decision comes after the supermarket announced it would be closing its remaining patisserie, hot food, and pizza counters by early summer. The move comes as Sainsbury's attempts to streamline the supermarket shopping experience for its in-store customers.
According to Ceres, Sainsbury's bosses are making these moves as a "cost-cutting initiative aimed at simplifying its operations". It is part of a wider strategy that goes beyond just axing some items for sale.
Sainsbury's is also trialling its version of scan and shop, which is already common in Asda and Tesco. Only two supermarkets are involved in this test, which sees customers without a traditional checkout lane.
Instead, customers simply need to pay before printing the receipt or having one emailed to them. Shoppers then return the handset to the designated SmartShop ports and leave.

The Premier League champions have paid Bayer Leverkusen £100million for the 22-year-old Germany international but that fee could potentially become a British record as there are £16m of add-ons included. If achieved that would surpass the existing mark of £115m which Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023 and it is understood Liverpool will be happy to pay these 'aspirational bonuses' as it will mean they have enjoyed considerable success at elite level. And that is what Wirtz, one of Europe's hottest properties, is determined to contribute to. 'I'm not coming (to) have fun here, I want also to achieve something and give the fans what they deserve,' he told the club's website. 'Of course I want to keep going at this performance. So yeah, that sure gives motivation to achieve more. 'I would like to win everything every year. First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work. In the end, we want to be successful. 'Last season they won the Premier League, so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious.' Wirtz has signed a five-year deal and at 22 has his best years ahead of him. Swansea University achieved its highest ever score in the prestigious QS list while Cardiff climbed five places. They buck the trend with most of the UK universities listed dropping down the ranks. The best UK university was named as Imperial College London which kept its place as second best on the planet after Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. Of the 90 British universities on the score sheet 54 fell. Edinburgh plunged seven places to 34th, and the London School of Economics and Political Science, dropped from 50 to 56. After a tough year with deep cuts and job losses Cardiff University was ranked 181 on the list, up five places compared to last year and 26th best in the UK, although not its best ever QS score. Swansea University at 292 achieved its best ever ranking on the list and is up one place on last year. A Swansea University spokesperson said: "This marks consistent growth over the past five years, with Swansea advancing 182 places since 2021, when it was ranked 474th. Cardiff achieved an overall point score of 57.8 while Swansea had a 46.2 score for these. Swansea said its success in the latest score was driven by strong performances in international students, sustainability and employer and academic reputation. Cardiff said it saw improvement in areas including international research network, faculty student ratio and employment outcomes. Professor Paul Boyle, vice-chancellor of Swansea University, said: 'This year's QS ranking is a clear reflection of Swansea University's growing global reputation and a testament to the excellence and outstanding dedication of our staff. Rising to 292nd place and maintaining a position in the world's top 300 for the second consecutive year is a significant achievement, of which we are justifiably proud. 'This accomplishment underscores the strength of our academic reputation, the diversity of our international community and our growing impact in key areas such as sustainability. I extend my sincere thanks to everyone across our university community whose collective commitment has made this success possible over successive years.' Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wendy Larner said: 'It's really encouraging to see Cardiff rise in the QS World Rankings. It reflects the dedication and expertise of the entire University community.' Of the other Welsh universities Bangor was placed 566 with an overall score of 29.3 and Aberysywyth ranked between 741 and 750th place and with no overall score recorded. The University of South Wales, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Wrexham and the University of Wales Trinity St David were not on the list. Across the top UK instutions Oxford and Cambridge both fell one place each to rank fourth and sixth respectively, Bristol University climbed three places to 51 with an overall score of 82.5, Birmingam was 76th place with an overall score of 73.8, Exeter was ranked 155 on the list and the University of the West of England (UWE) was ranked at between 721 and 730th place.
