Midnight Hammer: inside the strike the US says Iran didn't see coming
The heart of operation 'Midnight Hammer' was a feint. A group of American B-2 bombers – the only jets capable of deploying 30,000-pound (13,607kg) bunker-buster munitions with a shot at breaching the mountains shrouding Iran's Fordow nuclear facility – flew west across the Pacific Ocean. When those planes were spotted on flight-tracker data, they were seen as being deployed as a way to strong-arm the Islamic Republic into negotiations. But in reality, they were decoys meant to maintain tactical surprise, according to US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. While those planes got all the attention, another group of B-2s flew east – literally under the radar. Those moves were part of a 37-hour operation that resulted in strikes at the Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz nuclear sites this weekend, plunging the US directly into a conflict between Iran and Israel in the Middle East and raising fears over deeper violence to come in the region and beyond. The concerns are extending to markets as well, with traders predicting stocks will drop, oil prices will spike and the dollar will strengthen. Twenty killed in suicide bombing at Damascus church
Twenty killed in suicide bombing at Damascus church Civil defence members inspect the damage after a blast rocked the Mar Elias Church. Photo: Reuters At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured in a suicide bombing at the Mar Elias Church in Syria's capital Damascus on Sunday, health authorities and security sources said. It was the first suicide bombing in Damascus since Bashar al-Assad was toppled by an Islamist-led rebel insurgency in December. Syria's interior ministry said the suicide bomber was a member of Islamic State. He entered the church, opened fire and then detonated his explosive vest, a ministry statement added. A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said two men were involved in the attack, including the one who blew himself up. A priest at the church said the congregation had heard shooting outside before two people entered with explosive belts and detonated them during the Sunday Mass. Islamic State has been behind several attempted attacks on churches in Syria since Assad's fall, but this was the first to succeed, another security source told Reuters. Syria's state news agency cited the health ministry as saying that 52 people were also injured in the blast. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the offensive against Assad before taking over in January for a transitional phase, has repeatedly said he will protect minorities. (Reuters)
