And their battle for legendary status has now been ongoing for over 20 years.
Messi, 37, currently stars for MLS side Inter Miami after a dazzling career for Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Argentina.
Ronaldo, 40, continues to tear things up for Saudi outfit Al-Nassr following glory at Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.
And the pair boast 19 league titles between them, as well as nine Champions Leagues and seven international trophies.
As far as Ballon d'Ors go, Messi leads Ronaldo by eight of the individual honours to five.
But despite their rivalry on the pitch, the pair have sought to play down reports of a grudge off it too.
Ronaldo previously declared he 'admired' Messi's career while admitting son Cristiano Jr adored the Argentine's skills.
Meanwhile, Messi believes they have enjoyed a 'great battle' and 'deserve credit' for leading the 'golden era' of football.

Now, the World Cup winner has given a deeper glimpse into his relationship with his Euro-clinching counterpart.
Admitting he's 'not friends' with Ronaldo, Messi told DSports: 'I have a lot of respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and for the career he's had and continues to have, because he's still competing at the highest level.

'The competition with him was on the pitch. Each of us wanted to do the best for our team. Obviously, as always, everything stayed on the field.
'Off the pitch, we are two normal people. We're not friends obviously because we don't spend time together, but we've always treated each other with a lot of respect.'
Ronaldo also had his say on Messi earlier this year.
He declared: 'I have a good relationship with Messi. It was a healthy rivalry, we got along.'

London City Lionesses announce high-profile signing of Danielle van de Donk

33-year-old midfielder, Danielle van de Donk, joined London City Lionesses on a free transfer following the expiry of her contract at French giants Lyon, now rebranded OL Lyonnes. Both OL Lyonnes and London City are part of Michele Kang's growing portfolio in women's football with the American investor continuing to make waves across Europe. This marks a significant first signing for the Lionesses ahead of their inaugural WSL campaign after they clinched the Championship title in May. The club operates independently of any men's team - setting it apart in a league dominated by affiliated giants like Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. Van de Donk brings with her a wealth of experience and a winning streak. She lifted the WSL trophy with Arsenal in 2019 and played a central role in the Netherlands' European Championship victory in 2017, later helping the team reach the 2019 World Cup final. Speaking after the announcement, van de Donk said: 'I feel really good about this decision. It's such a nice environment to be in, the club really appeals to me, it reminds me of a little family, and I want to be a part of it. The project that London City have, it's different but in a good way. London City have to battle for everything and that's my style.' The veteran midfielder has penned a two year deal and will be central to a team aiming to challenge the established order in English women's football. Elsewhere in the women's game the FA has confirmed plans to expand the WSL to 14 teams starting from the 2026-27 season, a move that signals continued growth and investment in the top tier. In the third tier Burnley have appointed two time WSL winning manager Matt Beard as their new head coach, making headlines as they gear up for a transition to full time professionalism. The former Liverpool manager was in advanced discussions with Burnley and told the club's media channels: 'I'm so impressed with everybody I've met at the club and the conversations I've had, and I'm looking forward to getting started.' Beard, who was previously in charge at Chelsea and West Ham, arrives with the club preparing to become a full-time women's football operation from next season.

Kylian Mbappe leaves hospital after missing Real Madrid's first Club World Cup match with acute gastroenteritis

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has left hospital after missing his side's first game at the newly-expanded Club World Cup after suffering from gastroenteritis. Mbappe, 26, was a surprise omission from the first starting line-up to be named by new manager Xabi Alonso against Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal on Wednesday. The Frenchman was sorely missed by his team-mates as they drew 1-1 after Federico Valverde missed a golden chance to win the encounter in stoppage time when his penalty was saved. Following the match, Madrid released a statement on Thursday in which they clarified why Mbappe was absent. The club said that he had been taken to hospital on the day of their match against Al-Hilal to undergo tests, adding that he had made a return to the team's camp. On Friday, Real also confirmed that Mbappe was in the team hotel and undertaking aerobic work as he recovered from illness. Manager Xabi Alonso is unsure if he will be fit enough to feature in his side's next game When prompted to give an update on Mbappe's health on Tuesday, Alonso said: 'Kylian was feeling a bit better in the morning, but not good enough because it's too hot. 'We're going to wait for him until the last moment, we'll decide tomorrow.' After the draw against Al-Hilal, the Spaniard added: 'I don't know if Mbappe will be back for the next game. 'We'll see. He wasn't doing well in the last two days. He's sick.' In Mbappe's place, Alonso opted to start 21-year-old striker Gonzalo Garcia who scored 25 goals in 36 matches for Real Madrid Castilla last season. He notched the opener against Al-Hilal on Wednesday before former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves ensured the spoils were shared.
