Harmless Conspiracy Theories That Are So Believable

Harmless Conspiracy Theories That Are So Believable

Buzz Feed12-06-2025

Conspiracy theories can be genuinely dangerous, especially when they spread unchecked on social media, where misinformation can go viral before anyone has a chance to fact-check it. As we have seen in the last few years, these kinds of theories can fuel distrust, incite panic, or even cause real-world harm. But not all conspiracy theories are sinister. Some are totally harmless (and honestly kind of fun), like the ones that claim Nicolas Cage is a time traveler or that birds aren't real.
Recently, I came across a viral Reddit thread from several years ago where user shivas877 asked: "Which conspiracy theory is so believable that it might be true?"
The thread had over 34K responses! While there were some well-known sinister ones in there, most were harmless. Below are some of the top and most often repeated lighthearted conspiracy theories people are convinced could be real:
"Starbucks baristas are told to misspell customers' names so that they post photos on social media of their Starbucks cup. 'Check out how this guy spelled Barry!!! Borreye?!?! Lol, smh.'"

"That your phone's microphone is constantly 'hot' and it's listening for keywords to target advertising.
"The most glaring instance where this happened to me was when I walked into a colleague's office. He had just gotten a standing desk, but one that goes on top of his existing desk rather than a standalone (pun?) Model. That's important to note.I said, 'Nice standing desk, when did you get that?' 'Thanks, just today.' He replied. That was literally all that was said about the desk. We talked about work-related stuff, and as I walked out and checked my phone, there was an ad on Facebook for that EXACT model of standing desk.I have never owned one, wanted one, or googled one before. Yet there it was on my feed. Tin foil hat be damned, they listen in."—Seannj222
"The 'arms' on Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons are backwards. They ought to be rotated 180 degrees. What good are these stubby little arms for? It is now an established fact that T-Rexes were not covered in scales but in feathers, like a bird. Take the 'arms' of a T-Rex and flip them around 180 degrees. Now you have wings like an ostrich.
"Tyrannosaurus rex had wings. Not big wings to fly with, but wings that were perhaps something like those of an ostrich, cassowary, or emu, although likely much smaller in proportion to their body. Ostriches use their wings in mating rituals, to make themselves appear larger, and to signal and communicate. Perhaps the T-Rex used theirs for some similar purpose. They did not have useless stubby little arms."—DemonicP3nguin

"The reason Disney came out with a movie called Frozen was so that when you googled 'Disney frozen,' you would get information about the movie and not websites talking about Walt Disney's body being frozen."

This Cemetery Groundskeeper Did An AMA That Went Viral

Do you love all things weird, dark, and creepy? Subscribe to the That Got Dark newsletter to get your weekly dopamine fix of the macabre! It's a scary good time you won't want to miss. Recently, Reddit user odd_fisch, a cemetery groundskeeper, did a very interesting AMA on r/CemeteryPorn (they also shared the really pretty photo below!). And, unsurprisingly, a lot of people had a lot of questions. Here are the best and top-voted questions and then the answers from odd_fisch: "What percentage of graves get visited?" —finalgirl08 "Do you have many regulars who visit a lot? To visit particular graves, or to take in the whole place, typically?" —turtle2turtle3turtle "How common is it for people to piss and shit on the graves of people they hated in life?" —Famous_Suspect6330 "Can share any particular incident or burial which made you laugh?" —OGadminOP "I volunteer in a previously abandoned cemetery. We have lots of cave-ins where caskets collapsed over time in the wooded sections. Do you experience this at yours? How do you handle it if so?" —isuzupup__ "When a headstone is broken or pushed over, who typically deals with that? Would it be you if you just happened upon it or would the family of the deceased have to ask for it to be fixed? I pick up headstones if I find them toppled or kicked over, and I always wondered who is supposed to do that since some of the ones I've picked up were seemingly like that for years, and no one picked them up. But I know I saw the groundskeepers. So I wasn't sure if it was a 'can't touch it till a report is made' type of situation or not." —Individual_Ad_6777 "Have you ever had any issues with visitors (living or ghosts, LOL)?" —DistinctBell3032 "How many high school metal bands have you caught trying to film music videos?" — GivemTheDDD "Any problems or accidents with the people having 'séances?'" —HanhnaH "I was in a graveyard with my daughter yesterday. We met an older gentleman who was mowing a section of the lawn/graves. He saw us walking and pointed to the stone a little ways away and said, 'That one's mine.' Being certain he wasn't a ghost, how often do families preplace a stone and do maintenance? I'm guessing his family of yesteryear is buried there. It was a tiny cemetery, under 20 rows." —fugensnot "Is your job well compensated?" —alwayssearching2012 "Have you ever seen a ghost in your cemetery before? I think that is the question that everybody wants to know the most." — International-Sea561 "Do you ever feel afraid, especially at night, or are you pretty comfortable being there?" —Wintermoon54 "Have you ever seen anyone ever accidentally fall into a grave?" —No_University6980 "What's the oldest grave there?" —Bleacherblonde "For those old sites, since no one is around anymore to help maintain them, do you guys get together and help those out a little more?" —Oy_theBrave "Do you have a list of your favorite headstones? What is it about them that makes them you're favorite?" —crapatthethriftstore "Have you ever been involved in an exhumation?" —genzgingee "Do you assist with burials (like, set up those things that lower the casket)? What are the requirements to become a cemetery groundskeeper?" —CHAIFE671 "I also work at a cemetery, primarily in the office, but I also help the grounds crew from time to time. What's the dumbest complaint you've heard about the way you keep your cemetery? For us, I'd probably say the lady who complained that our trees weren't trimmed pointy enough." —starwishes20 "Why do I see really old headstones with 'perpetual care' on them, yet they're cracked, toppled over, or broken? Doesn't perpetual care mean they paid so that if it ever broke, no matter how far into the future, it would be fixed? What happens when those old mausoleums start crumbling? Does anyone fix it, or will it just continue to fall apart? What if the mausoleum gets so bad that the coffin is exposed?" —Inevitable-Plenty203 "What do you do during a typical day?" —ImDeepState Finally, "What's your favorite part about the job?" —Queenielauren You can read the original AMA on Reddit. Dad Says His Teen Daughter 'Blew Up' at Him and Refuses to Talk After He ‘Embarrassed' Her at a Sleepover

A single dad says his teen daughter isn't speaking to him after he 'embarassed' her at a sleepover He explained that she broke one of the only two rules he gave her, so he sent her friends home The man shared his story on Reddit, where fellow Reddit users said he handled the situation 'perfectly'A man says that his teenage daughter is refusing to speak to him after he 'embarrassed' her at a recent sleepover, and he's wondering if he potentially mishandled the situation. The 42-year-old parent detailed his story on the popular Reddit forum 'Am I the A------,' a place where people go to seek advice about interpersonal dilemmas. In his post, he explained that he has a 17-year-old daughter named Anya and a 14-year-old stepson named Noah. 'Noah's mom passed a few years ago, and I've had full custody since. He's had a rough go of it, but he's a good kid,' the dad of two wrote, adding, 'He's not antisocial or shy, but he does not appreciate having his space invaded, and when very upset, he can kinda shut down.' He proceeded to write that his daughter — who is 'much more outgoing and has lots of friends — recently asked if she could have a sleepover at their house. The Reddit user said that he agreed under two conditions: He asked that the girls 'keep things down after 11' so that he could sleep and that they not go into his stepson's bedroom as 'the friends who were coming were pretty loud and have a tendency to crowd Noah.' 'In my opinion, these are not strict rules,' he noted. However, the man said that when he went upstairs to check on the teens at about 10 p.m., he found the girls in Noah's room, adding that it 'looked like they'd been there a while.' The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now! 'Two [of the girls] were literally sitting on his bed with him there, one of them was flipping through his sketchbook, [and] another was messing with his other stuff,' he recalled. 'Noah was clearly upset." The man said that he told the girls to leave the room, and he called 'every single one of their parents' to have them picked up. The Redditor said that his daughter then 'blew up' at him and said he had 'embarrassed" her, adding, "But I told her that I gave them TWO rules and they failed spectacularly." He admitted that his daughter is not currently speaking to him, and he is now left wondering if he 'handled things right.' 'AITA [am I the a------]?' the man asked at the end of his post. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Reddit users were quick to say that they thought that he handled the situation extremely well, assuring him that he was in no way the 'a------' here. 'Very good job OP [original poster],' one person replied. 'I am sure Anya is upset, but that is because of her own actions. Noah is upset because his sister intentionally hurt him. Those are different things, and you did the right thing in correcting the former child and protecting the latter child.' 'NTA [not the a------],' another person said. 'This is some of the best parenting I have seen in a long time [...]. You handled this perfectly, and your daughter needs to reflect on what she did to [her stepbrother] in his safe space.' 'One thing I want to point out is how this may be something Noah thinks about a lot moving forward in life,' someone else added. 'You stood up for him against your daughter. Your 'real' kid. As a teen boy living with a stepfather and stepsister, you have to wonder if he thinks you view them equally. You just proved to him that you do. He's as much your son as your daughter. You absolutely handled this the right way.' Read the original article on People

Selena Gomez Catches Heat for 'Rich Person' Behavior After Recent Photo Enraged Fans

is rubbing some fans the wrong way after sharing a seemingly harmless photo from a recent concert she attended. The Disney channel alum is facing criticism after she admitted to watching a New York Knicks basketball game on her phone while attending a concert stop along Beyonce's Cowboy Carter tour. After posting a photo via Instagram Stories of her mobile device situated up on the glass of what looked to be box seating at the highly-anticipated concert series, Reddit users had a field day with the snap, calling the actress' move "rich person" behavior. "Still got my eye on the game," text over the picture read, with the music event taking place at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium down below. The image sparked debates across the internet, with people taking to the sharing platform to express their opinions about celebrity behavior and concert etiquette. Several conveyed disappointment over Gomez's apparent lack of engagement. "Not surprised. Rich people can't appreciate things because they've destroyed the pleasure center of their brain from getting what they want all the time. Selena will never know an Ounce of the happiness I felt in the cheap seats," one top comment read. Another echoed that sentiment, chiming in with, "GIRL…….. and all those empty seats! What a waste. Rich people are sf annoying," in part. On the other hand, many understood the need to be tapped into both events at once. "I live in NYC and plenty of my friends who went to the Cowboy Carter show last night also had the game on their phones… I'm not a basketball fan but apparently it's been a big deal 🤷‍♀️," someone reasoned. "Would that be me at a Beyonce concert, absolutely not! But this is a nothing burger tbh…she likes Bey and she likes basketball, she wouldn't be there if she didn't want to 😭," another candidly pointed out, as another said, "Can't blame her. Knicks pacers series 🔥." An additional Reddit user added, "Not to mention that it was a huge playoff game. I can't blame her for keeping up with it while at a concert. I would absolutely do the same thing." Amid all the online chatter, it should be noted that the Only Murders in the Building star has been a regular at Knicks games, often attending with her fiancé, Benny Blanco. The couple was recently spotted courtside at Madison Square Garden, displaying no shortage of PDA and enjoying the sporting event together. The New York Knicks are currently facing off against the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals—the team's first time making it this far since 1999.
