Mar. 9—EAST GRAND FORKS — Following a good showing at the Minnesota State VEX Robotics Competition, the East Grand Forks team is preparing to head to the VEX World Championship this spring.
"We had a very good year, all year, and it has been very exciting to see the team the whole time," Coach Nathan Blair said. "I knew they were going to do well (at the competition). ... It's been a pretty big year for them."
The Minnesota State VEX Robotics Competition was held Feb. 27 through March 1 in St. Cloud, and is the state's largest competition for K-12 robotics. The East Grand Forks Robotics program came home with five invites across its three teams to the Worlds Competition. The teams also earned four awards recognizing their design, coding and team skills. Sixty high school-level teams and 54 middle school-level teams competed.
This was the fourth year qualifying for the state competition for the East Grand Forks senior team SynthWave. The team made it to the quarterfinal round of the head-to-head competition and won the skills tournament with the highest score of any team throughout the season, breaking its own season record, qualifying them for Worlds. The team also won the Think Award, which recognizes the most effective use of coding techniques and design for game challenges, also qualifying them for Worlds. The team made up of Nolan Blair, Luke Massmann and Sebastian Olson got two invites to Worlds.
East Grand Forks had two teams competing in the Metal Robot middle school division. The Constructors made it to finals in the head-to-head tournament and won the skills tournament, qualifying for Worlds from both. The Constructors team is made up of Braiden Anhorn, Asher Blair, Andrew Cassanelli and Aiden Kazmierczak. The Robo Turtles made it to the quarterfinals in the head-to-head tournament, and also won the Design Award, recognizing their team's approach to engineering its robot, qualifying them for Worlds. The Robo Turtles team is made up of Zoe Baez, Eli Bowman, Kylen Driscoll and Zaiden Olson.
Nathan Blair also won the Mentor of the Year award and Jessica Johnson won Volunteer of the Year for the time she has put into helping the team compete.
The team is currently fundraising to help fund its trip to the world competition in early May. Around 800 high school teams and 500 middle school teams from across the world will be competing in the VEX V5RC Worlds Competition in Dallas. More information on the fundraising can be found on the East Grand Forks Robotics Facebook page.

AJ Ginnis, former U.S. Ski Team athlete, to be first 2026 Olympic torchbearer

Greek Alpine skier AJ Ginnis, a world slalom silver medalist and former U.S. Ski Team member, will be the first torchbearer of the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympic torch relay that starts Nov. 26. Ginnis, who eyes his Olympic debut in February at age 31, will receive the flame in the ancient Olympic site of Olympia, Greece, to start the torch relay. A Greek athlete traditionally is the first torchbearer before an athlete from the Olympic host nation. 'It is a great honor for me, something that I never imagined as a child,' Ginnis said, according to the Greek Olympic Committee. The relay will culminate at the Feb. 6 Opening Ceremony at the San Siro Stadium in Milan. The relay typically spends multiple days in Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics, before moving to the host nation. For Milan Cortina, the Italy portion of the relay will start Dec. 4 in Rome. Ginnis missed most of last season due to knee surgery. In 2023, he earned what is believed to be Greece's first world championships medal in any Winter Olympic program event when he took slalom silver. The best Greek finish in any event at a Winter Olympics was 13th in women's skeleton in 2002. Ginnis previously raced for the U.S. at the 2017 Worlds, then was dropped from the national team after the 2017-18 season following several injuries and a best World Cup finish of 26th at the time. He switched to his birth nation of Greece, where he had learned to ski at Mount Parnassus, a 2 1/2-hour drive from Athens. He moved to Austria at age 12 and then Vermont three years after that. Ginnis has undergone at least seven knee surgeries in his career. He tore an ACL in summer 2021, ruling him out of the 2022 Winter Games. He thought he was done with ski racing when he went to Beijing to work the 2022 Olympics for NBC. 'When I came back, I told myself, my goal is to go into the next Olympic cycle being a medal contender,' he said at the 2023 Worlds. 'Fighting back from injuries, getting cut from teams, trying to fundraise for what we're doing now. ... This is a dream come true on every level.' Nick Zaccardi,

Marco Sturm hired as new head coach of Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins have hired Marco Sturm to be the team's next head coach, general manager Don Sweeney announced Thursday morning. Sturm, who played five seasons in Boston during his NHL career, will formally be introduced by the Bruins at a press conference next week. Boston was the last team to fill its head-coaching vacancy this offseason. Sturm will be the 30th head coach in Bruins history. He takes over a team that went 33-39-10 under Jim Montgomery and Joe Sacco last season, and missed the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade. "Throughout this process, our goal was to identify a coach who could uphold our strong defensive foundation while helping us evolve offensively," Sweeney said in Thursday's release. "We were also looking for a communicator and leader – someone who connects with players, develops young talent, and earns the respect of the room. Marco impressed us at every step with his preparation, clarity, and passion. His path – playing for multiple NHL teams, coaching internationally, and leading at both the AHL and NHL levels – has shaped a well-rounded coach who's earned this opportunity. "As a former Bruin, he understands what this team means to the city and our fans," Sweeney continued. "We're embracing a new direction with Marco behind the bench and are confident his energy, standards, and commitment to a competitive, hard-nosed brand of hockey reflect exactly what Bruins hockey should be." Who is Marco Sturm? Bruins fans are familiar with Sturm from his playing days, when he spent five of his 14 NHL seasons in Boston. He arrived in the blockbuster Joe Thornton trade in 2005, and had 106 goals and 87 assists over 305 games for the Bruins. His biggest goal for Boston was a game-winner in the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park, lifting the Bruins to a 2-1 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Kings, and the Vancouver Canucks during his career, and finished with 242 goals and 245 assists over 938 games. While he has no head-coaching experience at the NHL level, the 46-year-old Sturm has been coaching since 2015. He spent three years as the head coach of Germany's Olympic team, which included a silver medal in the 2018 Winter Olympics and trips to the quarterfinals in the Worlds. He was back in the NHL as an assistant for the Kings from 2018-22, before he was promoted to head coach of L.A.'s AHL affiliate. Sturm has spent the last three seasons as the head coach of the Ontario Reign, where he's compiled a 119-80-11-6 record and made three consecutive playoff appearances. Now he's tasked with turning around the Boston Bruins as he navigates the waters as an NHL head coach for the first time.

Cole Hocker wants to follow Olympic gold with two more career firsts in 2025

Naturally, Cole Hocker wants to follow his 2024 Olympic gold medal by taking the world title this September, but that's not his only goal this summer. Hocker, who last Aug. 6 became the second American in the last 116 years to win an Olympic 1500m, was asked what would make 2025 a successful follow-up campaign. 'World champion,' he said without hesitation. 'That's, without a doubt, the goal. To go back to back in what I think is one of the most competitive eras that the 1500m has ever seen, that would make it a success without a doubt. Obviously, fast times are always in the cards, and I want to run fast, but most importantly, I want to win.' Beyond winning, the 23-year-old has sights set on another event. 'Also making the U.S. team in the 5k alongside the 1500m, I think that would be a huge step in the right direction for my career,' said Hocker, who was seventh in the Olympic Trials 5000m in his fifth total race of that meet. No American has competed in both the 1500m and 5000m at an Olympics or World Championships since Bernard Lagat, who won both events at the 2007 Worlds and took silver and bronze in 2009. Elle St. Pierre did qualify for both events for the 2024 Paris Games but dropped the 5000m to focus on the 1500m. To make his double happen, Hocker will most likely have to place in the top three in both events at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships from July 31-Aug. 3 at his old college home in Eugene, Oregon. Unlike Olympic Trials, he would only have to race three times at nationals. In the 1500m, the U.S. has developed depth over the last few years, just as the world has. At nationals, Hocker must deal with Olympic bronze medalist Yared Nuguse, Hobbs Kessler (fifth in Paris) and possibly emerging talents like Jonah Koech, who won a Diamond League race last week. In the 5000m, Olympic bronze medalist Grant Fisher was the lone American to finish in the top eight at either the 2023 Worlds or the Paris Games. Hocker, who trains under Virginia Tech coach Ben Thomas, will be race tested like never before thanks to the new Grand Slam Track series. He has faced both Nuguse and Olympic silver medalist Josh Kerr of Great Britain at three meets already this season. Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the Tokyo Olympic champion, hasn't raced since March 23 while recovering from an Achilles injury. In six total 1500m races since Paris, Hocker has finished second, third, third, third, third and second. Hocker's gold medal — won with a kick from third place in the last 100 meters — sits on a dresser in his room. No fancy display case. 'From what I've experienced and what I've gotten, you put feelings and emotions onto this object,' he said. 'I try to detach myself from that and just let it be a mark of what a beautiful season I put together. Look at the full season as almost like a work of art. That was a perfect season for me. So I feel like the gold medal for me is just that all encapsulated into an object, but I hate to give any object too much value.' Nick Zaccardi,
