Silver economy far from enough for rapidly ageing Hong Kong

By 2046, an estimated 36 per cent of Hong Kong's population
will be over 65 . The Hong Kong government has
announced 30 measures to
promote the silver economy . While targeting the consumption power of the elderly may provide a much-needed boost to the economy, it is far from a solution to the mounting challenges posed by our rapidly ageing society.

As a carer for two wheelchair-bound parents, I face daily struggles that underscore the urgent need for a more comprehensive approach to ageing. These struggles are not unique to me but reflect systemic gaps that demand immediate attention. Other cities and countries have tackled these issues with foresight and innovation, and Hong Kong has much to learn from their successes.
Hong Kong is far from being a
wheelchair-friendly city . Stairways, kerbs and narrow pathways make navigating
urban spaces a daily ordeal for those with mobility challenges and their carers.
Singapore, by contrast, was recognised as one of 10 most accessible cities in the world in a 2022 travel survey. Compared to Hong Kong's barrier-free access manual, Singapore's barrier-free accessibility code seems to place a stronger emphasis on universal design principles, seamless connectivity between indoor and outdoor spaces, and the incorporation of assistive technologies as part of its smart city initiatives.
In Hong Kong, the health system also poses significant barriers. Elderly people often require regular medical appointments for chronic conditions, but they face a stark choice between expensive private care and long waits for public services. Outside regular clinic hours, the only option for most people is the overcrowded
accident and emergency departments of public hospitals.

Hong Kong needs to embrace teleconsultations at scale to improve healthcare accessibility. In Asia, Singapore has mainstreamed telehealth in both public and private healthcare systems.

In a complaint filed on Tuesday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York, Dr Doreen Benary alleged that her explicit allergy disclosure was overlooked during meal service on Singapore Airlines flight SQ026 from Frankfurt to New York on October 8. Benary, 41, was flying business class and had informed the crew of her allergy to shrimp after boarding, according to the court filing. Nonetheless, she was allegedly served a dish containing the allergen and became ill shortly after eating it. 'Nearly immediately after ingesting a portion of said meal, Plaintiff detected the presence of shrimp and began to feel ill,' the complaint states. When she questioned the crew, a flight attendant 'admitted that she had made an error and apologised'. The flight was subsequently diverted to Paris, where Benary was taken by ambulance and treated at two different medical facilities. Filed under the Montreal Convention – the international treaty that governs liability in international air travel – the lawsuit accuses Singapore Airlines of negligence, arguing the incident meets the legal threshold of an 'accident', defined as an 'unexpected or unusual event or occurrence external to the passenger'.

Two Hong Kong government departments have launched an investigation into an award-winning medication prescription app invented by a student that had already been in use by a clinic three years earlier, the Post has learned. Advertisement The Digital Policy Office and Education Bureau said they were studying the mobile app that a student surnamed Poon, from St Paul's Co-educational College in Mid-Levels, submitted in competitions as her invention. Poon declined to respond to online accusations calling her 'a fake inventor', but told the Post she was going through the verification process with competition organisers. Her father, Ronnie Poon Tung-ping, is one of two doctors at a specialist clinic in Central that commissioned a US-based artificial intelligence (AI) software development agency to create the app in 2022, which was subsequently deployed. The investigations were launched after the incident came to light on June 13, prompted by City University student Hailey Cheng, who raised concerns on social media platform Threads about the research and development culture in secondary schools' STEM education and competitions, as well as the privacy of patients using the MediSafe app. Advertisement MediSafe, a medication management system designed to prevent prescription errors through AI-driven verification of patient information, has won at least six awards since August last year. The honours include a silver medal in the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions, Geneva, in 2025, a prestigious globally recognised accolade.

A Taiwanese car show model has tragically died after receiving a so-called 'milk injection' – the anaesthetic propofol – from the renowned 'Godfather of Liposuction' in an attempt to treat chronic insomnia, triggering widespread outrage and sorrow across social media. Cai Yuxin, in her 30s, boasted over 32,000 followers on Facebook. A beloved figure at car shows, she was affectionately compared to Lin Chi-ling, a famous Taiwanese actress, thanks to her striking looks and impressive height of 5 feet 7 inches (170cm). Having long battled insomnia, Cai sought sleep therapy on May 25 at the recommendation of a friend and underwent a procedure known as the 'milk injection' at Fairy Clinic in Taipei. The term 'milk injection' refers to propofol treatment – a potent, short-acting intravenous anesthetic commonly employed for sedation and anaesthesia in clinical settings, named for its distinctive milky appearance.
