Liberal Democratic Party against GRS-BN electoral pact
Kota Kinabalu:
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has taken a firm stance against any potential electoral cooperation between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Barisan Nasional-Umno ahead of the 17th state election.
Speaking at the Annual Conference of 12 West Coast Divisions on Sunday, LDP President Datuk Chin Su Phin (pic) said Malaysians and Sabahans made history in 2018 by toppling the BN-Umno government due to widespread corruption, abuse of power and the 1MDB scandal involving former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

'Umno is unwilling to change its ways after its downfall,' Chin said, citing Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh's tendency to play with racial and religious sentiments and the party's refusal to acknowledge Najib's guilt despite his conviction and incarceration.
Chin also referenced Sabah Umno Chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin's 2022 attempt to overthrow the Hajiji-led GRS government as another reason why GRS should avoid any pact with BN-Umno.

Chin defended the current GRS administration's track record, pointing out notable economic improvements under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's leadership.
He pointed to Sabah's cash reserves increasing to RM8.6 billion and State revenue projected to reach RM7 billion this year, up from RM4 billion in 2022.

Major investments include SK Nexilis Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Kibing Group's RM11.34 billion manufacturing plants in Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park and Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd's RM20 billion natural gas supply project.
The implementation of a six percent sales tax on petroleum products has generated RM1.5 billion annually for the State.

He said the GRS government also secured RM600 million in interior special grants from the federal government this year, notably higher than the RM53 million received during Parti Warisan's governance.
The upcoming state election will feature three main contenders GRS, Warisan and BN. Chin indicated that potential cooperation between GRS and Pakatan Harapan (PH) remains possible if PH contests no more than 20 State seats.
Additionally, he urged Chinese voters against putting all eggs in one basket by supporting Warisan, arguing that the party lacks strong Kadazan candidates and faces challenges in Malay constituencies due to vote splitting.
With only party president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal as a notable leader, Warisan has struggled to attract professionals since losing power two years ago, he said.
'Some Chinese voters have expressed their desire to support Warisan to change the government, but the reality is that Warisan is unlikely to form the next State Government without strong support from the Malay and Kadazan communities,' Chin said.
He urged Sabahans to evaluate candidates based on their backgrounds rather than party affiliation, pointing out the importance of maintaining political stability and continued development under proven leadership.
'The 17th state election is unlike previous polls because its outcome will have major implications on Sabah's political stability and economy,' Chin said, calling for wisdom in selecting leaders who will form the next State Government.

Federal-Sabah ties must be inter-governmental, not intra-party, says Armizan
Armizan Mohd Ali said GRS's 'Sabah first' model does not reject cooperation with national parties, but lays the foundation for local parties to form the backbone of the state government. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Cooperation between the federal and Sabah governments must take place on an inter-governmental and not intra-party basis, according to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah deputy secretary-general Armizan Mohd Ali. Armizan, who is also the domestic trade and cost of living minister, said GRS's 'Sabah first' model does not reject cooperation with national parties, but lays the foundation for local parties to form the backbone of the state government. 'This approach is crucial to ensure that federal-state relations are conducted on an inter-governmental basis, not an intra-party one,' he said when opening the annual meeting of the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah's Darau division today. 'This is because we want issues concerning state interests to be negotiated and resolved through formal channels between the federal and state governments, not within the internal mechanisms of a single party.' Armizan, who is also the Papar MP, said that when the same national party becomes the core of both the federal and state administrations, there is a tendency for issues affecting the state to be discussed and decided within party lines. 'If state matters are resolved through an intra-party process, the risk is that party interests will be prioritised over state interests. More worryingly, some national parties are deeply entrenched in a doctrine that places loyalty to the party above all else, without compromise,' he said. He also said there have been instances when state issues are sidelined simply because the national party prioritises national interests above state concerns. 'A clear example of this is the decades-long struggle over the Malaysia Agreement 1963. Only recently have we seen meaningful federal commitment on MA63 under the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. 'However, we cannot rely solely on the attitude or style of individual leaders, what we need is a structural solution,' he said. He said if there is a framework to ensure that federal-state relations remain inter-governmental in nature rather than intra-party, then state interests will always remain a priority. The state government, meanwhile, must function with state interests as its top priority. 'To national parties, (I say) lead the federal government. We will support and work with you. But let local parties lead the state government. This is the spirit behind the GRS and Pakatan Harapan Plus coalition government we have today,' he said. Sabah Barisan Nasional treasurer Salleh Said Keruak said yesterday the 'Sabahan No 1' is not an empty slogan for BN as it represents the party's struggle to give priority to the interests of the people of the state. Salleh, who had previously asserted that the struggle for the state's rights is not the domain of any one party but of all Sabahans, said Sabah BN moved in tandem with the federal unity coalition government, to ensure the state had a decisive voice in national affairs.

PENAMPANG: GRS direct member Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan has urged a generational leadership shift in Sabah, particularly in Moyog, calling for new leaders with fresh ideas. He said Sabahans have been misled for too long and real change requires space for sincere, critical thinkers, during Moyog Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah AGM on Sunday. Khairul commended veteran Datuk John Ambrose for stepping aside to allow Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun to lead, describing it as a positive example of political renewal. He acknowledged GRS's uneven support across Sabah but said its reform-minded stance under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor positions it well for the future. Ceasar Mandela said Moyog is ready to be a GRS stronghold, citing improved federal funding, reclaimed state powers, and key infrastructure gains under GRS. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
