IPOH, May 29 (Bernama) -- An increase in tourist arrivals and foreign investment into Perak, along with the implementation of the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan, are seen as contributing factors to the increased proficiency in English among the people in the state.
Professor in the Department of English Language and English Literature, Faculty of Language and Communication, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Dr. Raja Nor Safinas Raja Harun, said that several initiatives under the plan ensure that people of various age groups in Perak can acquire good English language skills.
"The Perak Menteri Besar's Office, Yayasan Perak, and the Perak State Education Department have launched an initiative for additional reference books under the Cikgu Sarani Tuition (TCS) program, and this includes English subject and additional reference books along with tuition to improve English proficiency in Perak.
"Besides that, Yayasan Perak also conducts English courses, for example, 'Practical English Proficiency in Working' and 'Business Communication Course' for the public and state government staff," she said when contacted by Bernama today.
Raja Nor Safinas said these courses emphasize and teach participants basic grammar skills, effective communication methods, and the use of English in the workplace, and as a result, it helps people feel more confident speaking the English language.
Additionally, she mentioned that the number of international tourists visiting Perak increased by 11.9 percent in 2024, and through the 2024 Hotel Guest Survey, 970,611 foreign tourists visited the state last year compared to 867,665 people in 2023.
"When there is an influx of international tourists, the people in this state will definitely meet them, and certainly there will be interaction and communication that requires a high level of understanding so that the intended message is conveyed accurately.
"Furthermore, these foreign tourists will also visit the many viral food spots in Ipoh and go to Pangkor Island as a duty-free zone, indirectly increasing the use and mastery of English as a communication tool," she said.
Earlier, Perak was crowned as the champion in English proficiency ranking in Malaysia with a score of 585 in the EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) 2024, surpassing other states.

24 Evacuated From Iran Arrive Safely In Malaysia

SEPANG, June 22 (Bernama) -- A total of 24 individuals, including 17 Malaysians, who were evacuated from Iran following escalating conflict in the country, have safely returned home. Malaysia Airlines flight MH781 carrying the evacuees landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 at 11.03 pm. They were welcomed by the Foreign Ministry's Deputy Secretary-General (Bilateral Affairs), Datuk Ahmad Rozian Abd Ghani. The group comprised 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens, and one Singaporean national. Malaysia's Ambassador to Iran, Khairi Omar, who led the group, told the media they had to travel by land for about 1,000 kilometres to exit Tehran. 'We chose a route away from the source of the attacks, which were coming from the west, so we headed east. Alhamdulillah, we received strong cooperation from the Turkmenistan government, which allowed foreign nationals to cross the border,' he said. He added that around 12 Malaysians were still in Iran and Wisma Putra was closely monitoring their situation to ensure their safety and well-being. According to a statement from Wisma Putra, all 24 individuals crossed the Iran–Turkmenistan border on June 21, 2025, and boarded a Turkmenistan Airlines flight T5 647 on June 22, 2025, to Bangkok, Thailand, before continuing their journey on Malaysia Airlines flight MH781 to Kuala Lumpur. The evacuation, coordinated by the Malaysian Embassy in Tehran, involved a 1,120-kilometre land journey to the Iran-Turkmenistan border. The Malaysian embassies in Ashgabat and Bangkok also facilitated flight arrangements from Ashgabat to Malaysia.

Embrace Diversity As A Strength, Not A Source Of Division

KUCHING, June 22 (Bernama) -- Racial diversity should be embraced as a strength to enhance national unity, rather than as a battleground for rivalry or a means to showcase superiority and ego, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said that in many other countries, such diversity has led to racial and religious hostility, eventually burdening the nation and negatively affecting the people. 'Unity within our multiracial society is increasingly essential to ensure that Malaysia remains strong amid the current uncertain global geopolitical landscape. 'Never underestimate the potential problems if you are disunited. The geopolitical conditions are so challenging and alarming. The future is never certain. But what we can ensure is a united Malaysia,' he said. Anwar was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here tonight, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi were the guests of honour at the event. Anwar said as prime minister, he feels proud in showcasing the country's cultural and racial diversity, especially as Malaysia assumes the ASEAN chairmanship this year and when receiving foreign dignitaries and corporate leaders. He said this was exemplified during a recent meeting with ConocoPhillips Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ryan Lance, where he wore a traditional Iban outfit gifted to him earlier by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. 'So I told him (Ryan) about Sarawak, about the beauty of the culture, that's what we have to do. And I take great pride as a Malaysian to speak to one of the great multi-billion dollar companies, probably one of the biggest oil companies in the world and number one in the United States,' he said.

He said Malaysia's leadership at the regional level has earned recognition from Asean member states as well as external partners who appreciate Malaysia's approach as a multiracial and multi-religious nation living in harmony. 'We have seen several recognitions given by our Asean partners who observe how we develop our country with people of different races and religions living under one roof as one big family. 'In this regard, we in Sarawak certainly give our full support towards positioning Malaysia as a nation respected by the world today,' he said. He was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here tonight. With the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Abang Johari said the state government is committed to realising the Asean Grid project, which has great potential and would enable Sarawak to play a strategic role as a major energy hub in the region. 'I had a brief discussion with the Prime Minister earlier, and I hope that one of the strategies we adopt will help realise your vision for the Asean Grid, which will provide an economic development boost to ASEAN, particularly through Malaysia's contribution,' he said. The Premier also said the presence of Anwar and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the cultural event reflected the strong relationship between the Federal Government and Sarawak. 'In fact, I was informed that the Prime Minister had another engagement scheduled for tonight. But he said, 'No, I want to go to Sarawak'… This reflects the close bond of brotherhood,' he added. Themed 'Peji Kenep Panau Pegep', which means 'United We Progress' in the Kayan ethnic language, the event featured traditional performances by the Orang Ulu, Bidayuh and Iban communities. The celebration was graced by the presence of Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi. Also in attendance, among others, were Dewan Negara President Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Bin Awang Ali Basah, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, and Gawai Dayak celebration main organising committee chairman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. – Bernama Abang Johari Tun Openg anwar ibrahim asean Asean grid
