Ahilyabai Holkar's tercentenary: PM Modi to attend women empowerment convention in Bhopal today

Indian Express31-05-2025

In a landmark celebration of women empowerment, the Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Women Empowerment Grand Convention will be held in Bhopal today, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending the event.
Organised by Matri Shakti (women power), the event marks the inauguration of the 300th birth anniversary year of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, an icon of good governance, self reliance, and women empowerment.
'On behalf of the 85 million people of Madhya Pradesh, I extend a heartfelt welcome to the Prime Minister. It is a matter of great fortune for us that the celebration of the virtuous Devi Ahilyabai Holkar's birth anniversary, to be held over the coming year, is being inaugurated today from the soil of Madhya Pradesh,' Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said in an official statement.
Ahilyabai Holkar, the revered 18th-century ruler of the Holkar dynasty, is remembered for rebuilding over 130 temples across India, establishing Maheshwar as a cultural and commercial hub.
Her contributions also include granting women rights in property, the right of a widow to adopt a son, and the right to remarry, and made rules to prohibit the dowry system.
To promote holistic development in the state, the Chief Minister announced a 'historic' initiative called Destination Cabinet, aimed at promoting tourism. 'This initiative realises the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote tourism. With the aim of remembering our glorious heritage along with modern development and moving forward by drawing inspiration from ideal heroes, we held two cabinet meetings in memory of Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar,' the CM said.
Two special cabinet meetings under the 'Destination Cabinet' initiative were also conducted in Maheshwar and Indore, aimed at implementing prohibition in 19 sacred sites of the state. The state will also launch the Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Training Programme.
Carrying forward the legacy of Ahilyabai Holkar, the Madhya Pradesh government also launched the Devi Ahilyabai Women Empowerment Mission, targeting education, health, safety, and economic self-reliance for women. The mission supports goals like improving the girl child sex ratio, reducing maternal mortality, and boosting female participation in the workforce.
The initiative aims to strengthen the fourth pillar of the guiding mantra of GYAN — (Garib, Yuva, Kisan, Nari — Poor, Youth, Farmer, Woman).

Opposition Questions Modi Govt's Refusal to Condemn the US For Airstrikes on Iran

New Delhi: Opposition members have questioned the union government's refusal to condemn the United States after it launched airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities early Sunday (June 22). This after Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing 'deep concern' over the escalating situation and calling for 'immediate de-escalation' through dialogue and diplomacy. Congress MP and the party's general secretary media and communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh said that the party 'reiterates the absolute essentiality of immediate diplomacy and dialogue with Iran.' 'President Trump's decision to unleash US airpower on Iran makes a mockery of his own calls for the continuation of talks with Iran. The Indian National Congress reiterates the absolute essentiality of immediate diplomacy and dialogue with Iran,' he said. 'The Government of India must demonstrate greater moral courage than it has so far. The Modi Government has unequivocally neither criticised nor condemned the US bombing and Israel's aggression, bombings and targeted assassinations. It has also maintained a deafening silence on the genocide being perpetrated on the Palestianians in Gaza.' Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas said that it was 'deeply concerning' that Modi called on Iran to de-escalate tensions while 'remaining conspicuously silent on the blatant violations of international law by the United States and Israel.' 'This departure from India's time-honoured commitment to sovereignty and non-interference is alarming. Notably, even staunch US allies like Oman, Qatar, and Iraq have openly criticised the strikes, and Saudi Arabia has unequivocally 'condemned and denounced the violation of the Islamic Republic of Iran's sovereignty,' he said. Modi's statement, confined to expressing 'deep concern at the recent escalations,' made clear that India was steering clear of any condemnation of the US strikes. There was no reference to the attacks themselves, nor any attempt to assign responsibility, with only broad terms used such as the 'current situation' and 'latest escalations.' 'Our foreign policy is so confused' Samajwadi Party chief and Lok Sabha MP Akhilesh Yadav said that India's foreign policy appears 'confused'. 'Our foreign policy is so confused. While we should not be commenting on this but remember the world looks at who you stand with in bad times. If you are not standing with your friend, who once did a favour for you, it is a big betrayal to the foreign policy of our country,' he said. In a joint statement Left parties condemned the US bombing in Iran and called it a "grave violation of Iranian sovereignty and the UN Charter" and asked for the Indian government to "abandon" its "pro-US, pro-Israel foreign policy". "The Indian government must immediately abandon its pro-US, pro-Israel foreign policy stance and join global efforts to stop the war," the statement said. The statement was issued by the Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI (M), Communist Party of India (ML) Liberation (CPI-ML) Liberation), All India Forward Bloc and the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP).

Shashi Tharoor praises PM Modi again: ‘Prime asset for India on the global stage'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remain a 'prime asset' for India on the global stage but deserve greater backing, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said on Monday. These remarks, like some of his recent ones, are likely to irk his party and widen the growing cracks in his ties with its leadership. Tharoor's praise for the prime minister comes at a time when the Congress has been consistently attacking the Modi government over its foreign policy. The Congress party even said that diplomacy was being "shattered" and the country stands "isolated" globally, more so after Pakistan's army chief General Asim Munir had a lunch meeting in Washington DC with US President Donald Trump a few days ago. In an article published in The Hindu, Tharoor said the diplomatic outreach following "Operation Sindoor" was a moment of national resolve and effective communication. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remains a prime asset for India on the global stage but deserves greater backing,' Tharoor wrote. After India launched Operation Sindoor in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, Tharoor has been making comments on the India-Pakistan conflict and the diplomatic outreach that are at variance with the stand of the Congress. Tharoor has often drawn criticism from his own party and jibes aimed at him by Congress leaders for his stand. Tharoor, who took the India case post Operation Sindoorin foreign countries while heading an all-party delegation earlier this month, has, with his remarks, seemingly riled his party for showing support for the Narendra Modi government over recent military actions across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir(PoK). The delegation, led by Tharoor, visited the US on the last leg of a multi-nation tour to brief key interlocutors about Operation Sindoor. The delegation was one of the seven multi-party delegations India had tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community to emphasise Pakistan's links to terrorism. "The diplomatic outreach following 'Operation Sindoor' was a moment of national resolve and effective communication. It affirmed that India, when united, can project its voice with clarity and conviction on international platforms," Tharoor said in the article. In his article, Tharoor said the aftermath of the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack and India's resolute response through 'Operation Sindoor' presented a critical juncture for the nation's foreign policy. "While the immediate military action was decisive, the subsequent diplomatic outreach was equally, if not more, vital in shaping global perceptions and consolidating international support," he said. One of the most striking takeaways is the power of national unity in projecting a strong foreign policy voice, he said. "It underscored that when it comes to national security and confronting terrorism, India speaks with one voice. This transcended domestic political differences, imbuing our message with greater credibility and gravitas in the eyes of our international interlocutors. Last week, while speaking in Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor had said he has differences of opinion with some in the party leadership, but he is not going to speak about them in light of the byelection in the Nilambur constituency. Key Takeaways Tharoor emphasizes the significance of national unity in foreign policy. Praise for Modi's diplomatic efforts contrasts with Congress's critical stance. Operation Sindoor showcases India's decisive military and diplomatic response to terrorism.

"HCL welcomed a delegation from CODELCO (Corporacin Nacional del Cobre), the state-owned copper mining company of Chile, in New Delhi early today.
