Passengers on particular aircraft, like Airbus A320 and Airbus A330, often hear a distinctive 'barking sound' that closely resembles the noise of a saw. Often, the grinding noise can be disturbing, sounding like a strange sound, or you may feel concerned about your safety. It's just a routine aircraft mechanism, explained Colonel Rajgopalan, founder of Aviation Training India.
It is the sound of a hydraulic pump that operates automatically to maintain the pressure. This occurs during the single-engine taxi operations and is caused by the Power Transfer Unit (PTU).
According to Rajgopalan, to save fuel during taxing and before takeoff, an aircraft switches on one engine and continues taxing when it is near a holding point before takeoff. 'When one engine is operating, then only one hydraulic system is working. The other one (which is yet to be switched on) becomes unbalanced, creating pressure. That is the reason why this particular sound occurs,' he said.
In simple terms, when the PTU activates, it rapidly switches between the two hydraulic systems, creating a reciprocating flow of hydraulic fluid. This reciprocating action generates the barking or grinding noise.

The sound is not a sign of any engine problems or danger, and it's a regular part of the A320's hydraulic system operation. 'It is nothing to be worried about. It is part of the aircraft's mechanism,' asserted Rajgopalan.
The PTU onboard the A320 is a hydraulically powered unit that exists to maintain a minimum pressure across two of the aircraft's hydraulic systems, unlike traditional motors or pumps, which are most likely electrically operated, said Rajgopalan.

Rajgoapalan also mentioned that because of the PTU's location on the aircraft, you're more likely to hear the sound if you sit close to the aircraft's wings. According to him, the PTU is located near the main landing gear, which is positioned close to the wings, allowing passengers to distinctly hear the sound.

Contrary to this, the ex-pilot revealed that airlines habitually overlooked the safety measures, resulting in such tragic incidents. He ruled out bad weather as one of the significant reasons behind the incident and went on to explain the loopholes of the airlines. In a well-informed video on his YouTube channel, Taneja highlighted the safety standards in the Indian aviation industry while addressing various theories about the tragic Air India Flight 171 crash. He said the dual-engine failure was possibly the only reason the Air India flight crashed. 'In the event of bad weather, the aircraft warns the pilots to either delay takeoff or abort takeoff… A 787 has two radars, one on the left and one on the right. For dispatch, it is necessary for at least one to be functional," he said. He continued, 'If the aircraft has 100 pieces of equipment, the rulebook says that it can function even if 30 of them have failed. For instance, an aircraft can fly safely with even one functional weather radar. To compete with them, Boeing unveiled the 737 Max, and decided that pilots can safely fly the aircraft with just a two-hour iPad training," he stated. However, according to Taneja, the airlines often neglect to inform pilots about the MCAS system (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System), a flight control system developed by Boeing, specifically for the 737 MAX aircraft, which was designed to enhance the aircraft's stability and wondered what if a different software issue could have caused the Air India crash. Further, highlighting the safety standards of the airlines, he said, 'A pilot told me that aircraft are in a pathetic state. Remember I told you about the MELs (Minimum Equipment Lists), and that a plane can fly with even one working radar? These snags are quite common. Every flight has snags. But they have a habit of overlooking these snags." The license applies to aircraft registered in India and select neighboring countries, reinforcing SIKAs focus on expanding its regional MRO capabilities. Sika Interplant Systems operates across engineered projects and systems, interconnect solutions and electrical module integration, MRO services, and value-added distribution. On a consolidated basis, net profit of Sika Interplant Systems rose 30.74% to Rs 7.91 crore while net sales rose 23.84% to Rs 46.02 crore in Q4 March 2025 over Q4 March 2024.
