Mysuru: Mysuru district minister HC Mahadevappa on Wednesday directed officials to respond promptly to any damage caused by rainfall.
At the district-level meeting at the Jaladarshini Guest House, the minister emphasised the need for precautionary measures as the monsoon started earlier than expected.
After receiving updates on the water levels and inflow to the reservoirs, Mahadevappa said six animals were affected in Nanjangud taluk due to rain, and relief should be provided to their owners. Additionally, 146 electricity poles that were damaged need repairs.
Measures should be taken to prevent rainwater from entering water tanks and wells during heavy rainfall, ensuring that drinking water remains uncontaminated.
With more rain anticipated in the district, agricultural activities are intensifying. He instructed that farmers preparing for sowing should not face any issues and that adequate seeds and fertilisers should be distributed properly.
With regard to incidents of disrespect towards national leader BR Ambedkar's portraits in Vajamangala, Sindhuvalli, and Hullahalli, Mahadevappa said such incidents should not occur, and police should remain vigilant.
People should be made aware to honour such great leaders, he stated.
As the district reported a few Covid cases, people should follow necessary precautions. If symptoms persist, they should get tested at the nearest hospital and receive appropriate treatment, he advised.
The meeting was attended by DC G Lakshmikanth Reddy and police commissioner Seema Latkar.

When monsoon magic meets climate chaos

As grey clouds roll over the emerald waters of Alappuzha, Baiju P.'s houseboat, anchored along the palm-fringed Punnamada backwaters, is dressed for the season with fresh linens, spicy meals, and a deck perfect for rain-watching. But bookings are thin. The monsoon once brought steady business, but now, with either heavy downpours or none at all, tourism operators find themselves at the mercy of a sky that no longer follows the script. 'Bookings started dropping by mid-May itself. With the monsoon beginning with heavy rains, there were a lot of cancellations towards the end of May. Right now, bookings are very low. There are also cases where people make bookings and then cancel them after checking weather alerts,' says Mr. Baiju. Domestic tourist arrivals from various parts of Kerala have dried up after the reopening of educational institutions. The sector is now dependent on visitors from other States. Tourism operators, especially in the houseboat sector, are rolling out deep discounts and special monsoon packages to attract tourists to the backwaters. But climate change, with its unpredictable weather patterns, is playing spoilsport with monsoon tourism in the region. According to Jobin J. Akkarakalam, president of Kerala Houseboat Owners Federation, bookings have dropped to just one or two per week (mostly on weekends), despite offering 30-40% discounts. 'Promote monsoon tourism' 'Before the 2018 floods, houseboats used to get five or more bookings on average every week during the monsoon period. The floods and the COVID-19 pandemic changed that. Tourists from outside the State who visit Alappuzha usually plan to explore multiple destinations across Kerala. However, weather-related restrictions on tourism activities often force them to alter their plans,' says Mr. Akkarakalam, adding that before the great deluge, monsoon tourism marketing by the State government was strong. 'We need to promote monsoon tourism to woo travellers.' With temperatures soaring in north India, tourism operators expect more people to head to Alappuzha to enjoy houseboat cruises in the coming days. 'Additionally, many people from the West Asia return home for vacations during July and August, so we anticipate a rise in bookings in the coming weeks,' adds Mr. Akkarakalam. Meanwhile, Tourism department officials say that bookings are low, but tourists are still coming. 'Most of them are from States like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The ban that had been imposed on shikara and small boat operations due to heavy rain has now been lifted,' says an official.

Covid-19 Or Common Cold? When Should You Get Tested? Here Are The Guidelines

India is currently witnessing a resurgence in Covid-19 cases. According to the Health Ministry data, 4302 active Covid cases have been recorded in the country as of today. The new variants LF.7 and NB.1.8.1 are spreading rapidly, leading to mild to moderate symptoms. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has stated that both variants are highly transmissible, although they predominantly cause mild illness. With the onset of rain and frequent weather changes, there has also been an increase in flu-like illnesses in recent weeks. Covid-19 can present symptoms that overlap with those of the common cold, making it challenging to distinguish between the two. Therefore, testing remains an effective measure for detecting a potential Covid-19 infection. Keep reading to understand the difference between a common cold and Covid-19 and when should you get tested. Common cold Vs Covid-19 The overlapping symptoms can make it difficult to differentiate between a cold and Covid-19. However, being aware of the symptoms can help. Common symptoms of the new Covid-19 strains include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, loss of appetite, body aches, fatigue, and a runny nose. Some infected individuals may also experience gastrointestinal issues and loss of taste and smell. In contrast, common cold symptoms generally include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, a sore or scratchy throat, and a mild cough with fever. Individuals with a common cold usually do not experience a loss of smell or taste, gastrointestinal issues, and fatigue to the same extent as those with Covid-19. However, due to the extreme similarities, covid can be easily mistaken for common cold and vice versa. When should you test for covid? According to the health ministry, symptomatic individuals need a covid test if: They have a history of international travel in the last 14 days They came in contact with confirmed cases They are a healthcare provider They are hospitalized patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) influenza-like illness (ILI) or severe pneumonia. Asymptomatic people who came in contact with infected individuals should be tested once between day 5 and day 14 of coming in his/her contact. The guidelines also mention that all individuals need not be tested as most cases are reported in individuals with a travel history to the affected countries or close contacts of positive cases. Ernakulam Public Health Committee moots measures to tackle monsoon-related diseases

The Ernakulam Public Health Committee has recommended stringent action as per the provisions of the Kerala Public Health Act in connection with the control measures initiated against the spread of infectious diseases with the onset of the southwest monsoon. A review of the situation pointed out the possibility of a spike in Hepatitis A and dengue cases. The authorities have asked enforcement agencies and local bodies to take action against those responsible for the distribution of contaminated drinking water in tankers. Transporters should possess the required licences/permits from the Department of Food Safety and other related departments. The committee stressed the need to create awareness among the public to keep their premises clean and avoid situation that may result in an increase in infectious diseases. People living in flood-hit regions and involved in relief and clean-up operations should take doxycycline tablets as a preventive measure based on health workers' advice. Those working in waterlogged areas should also take the medicine, besides taking proper safety measures to avoid infection, according to the health authorities. With the increase in COVID-19 cases, the public can adopt preventive measures including wearing masks and avoiding interaction with others after developing symptoms. Local bodies have also been told to ensure that water sources, including wells in apartment complexes and houses, are chlorinated at regular intervals. Forest department officials said that the school authorities in the district may download the SARPA mobile app to get the contact details of volunteers who have been trained in snake rescue operations. The suggestion was made considering the possibility of snakes entering campuses in the rainy season.
