Yoga Day celebrated in Mysuru

International Day of Yoga was celebrated in the backdrop of the iconic Mysuru palace in the city on June 21 with nearly 15,000 people taking part in the UN's annual event highlighting the health benefits of the ancient Indian discipline. Stakeholders, including members of various yoga organisations in Mysuru, had taken the initiative to organise a series of pre-event activities stretching for three weeks in the run-up to the programme on June 21. A salient feature of the yoga day event was the participation of children with special abilities. In his address, district in-charge Minister H.C. Mahadevappa emphasised the ancient roots of yoga in Indian tradition, and its recognition on the world stage. 'Yoga is a science gifted to the world by India. It brings harmony between the mind and body. Even allopathic doctors recommend yoga for strengthening joints and improving overall health,' he said. Mr. Mahadevappa said a country's progress depends on social harmony and health, values that yoga promotes, and added that yoga contributes to building a healthy, united, and peaceful society. Highlighting the growing relevance of yoga, he said people of any age can start learning and practising yoga to reap health benefits. 'Combining yoga with pranayam (breathing exercise) will do wonders for one's health and help manage stress,' he added. Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar highlighted Mysuru's deep connection with yoga, and described it as the 'birthplace of modern yoga'. 'Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar had brought renowned yoga master T. Krishnamacharya from Banaras to Mysuru. What was once a spiritual discipline, was made dynamic by Mr. Krishnamacharya, trained disciples like B.K.S. Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois, who took yoga to the world,' he added. He urged the people of Mysuru to take pride in this heritage and become yoga ambassadors. 'The global popularity of yoga owes much to Mysuru. Now, the world must benefit from it, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisioned,' he said. The event was inaugurated by lighting a lamp and blowing a conch after which the Common Yoga Protocol was followed. The theme of this year's event was Yoga for One Earth, One Health. Krishnaraja MLA T.S. Srivatsa, Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, and others were present. Representatives and members of Mysuru Yoga Federation, Sri Pathanjali Yoga Shikshana Samsthe and other organisations took part in the event.

Appointment letters handed over to pourakarmikas in Mysuru city

The credit for Mysuru's 'Clean City' tag goes to pourakarmikas, said Minister in charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa while handing over appointment letters confirming their status as regular government employees. Speaking at a function at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru on Friday, Mr. Mahadevappa said the pourakarmikas will now be entitled to all the benefits of government employees. 'Today, all of you are becoming permanent government employees. You will be entitled to all the benefits that government employees in the State recieve,' he said. Pointing out that the pourkarmikas had even been sent for training to Singapore, Mr. Mahadevappa said the very spirit of the Constitution is to give first priority to the most marginalised. 'Our government is pro-civic workers and will ensure all necessary facilities for you,' he added. He emphasised that children of civic workers should receive higher education and reach high positions. 'Everyone should become educated. The government has many schemes – make good use of them,' he said. Tanveer Sait, MLA, congratulated the pourakarmikas for achieving success in their struggle to become regular employees. 'Across the country, lakhs of civic labourers are working on a contract basis. Because of the bold steps taken by the State government, your dream has now come true,' he said. He pointed out that local bodies are densely populated, and emphasised the need to maintain cleanliness. Acknowledging the hardword put in by the pourakarmikas to keep the city clean, especially during Dasara when tourists from different States and foreign countries visit Mysuru, Mr. Sait said the grandeur of the festivities is elevated because of the efforts of the pourakarmikas in keeping the city clean. With the government confirming their employment, Mr. Sait called upon the civic workers to do their job with more responsibility. Former Mayor Narayan said the pourakarmikas should take advantage of the State government's scheme to regularise their employment and work towards building a better future for their children. Regional Commissioner D.S. Ramesh, Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, Mysuru City Corporation Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif, and others were present on the occasion.

There is no question of change in leadership in State, says Mahadevappa

Ruling out any possibility of replacing the Chief Minister in the State, Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa has said that there is no question of change in leadership. 'We do not know when the Congress high command discussed with MLC Vishwanath about a change in leadership in the State,' he quipped. Addressing presspersons in Kalaburagi on Sunday, Mr. Mahadevappa affirmed that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will complete a full five-year term. The people of Karnataka have blessed the Congress for five years and also given an opportunity for Mr. Siddaramaiah to continue in office for five years, he added. Criticising the BJP leaders for their double standards while demanding the resignation of Mr. Siddaramaiah for the recent stampede during the RCB's victory celebrations in Bengaluru, Mr. Mahadevappa argued that a stampede claimed lives during Kumbh Mela, more than 250 people lost their lives in a plane crash in Ahmedabad and seven devotees flying from Kedarnath temple to Guptkashi in Uttarakhand were killed in a helicopter crash. Did anyone demand the Prime Minister's resignation, he asked. It is inappropriate to politicise such tragic and sorrowful events, he said. However, the State government has formed an inquiry commission to investigate the stampede and to look into procedural lapses. 'We shall wait for the commission's report,' the Minister added. Taking an oblique dig at the functioning of the Modi-led government at the Centre, Mr. Mahadevappa said that the glorification of a single individual can be a pathway towards dictatorship. When a leader is praised and his actions are portrayed as infallible, it can undermine democratic institutions and pave the way for authoritarian rule. To uphold democratic values and preserve them, a consortium of various progressive organizations organised in September last year a 2,500-km-long human chain across the State to spread awareness about the Constitution and democracy during the International Day of Democracy. One must remember that equality and harmony can be achieved only by following the teachings of the Buddha, Basava and Ambedkar, he reiterated. MLA Allamprabhu Patil, MLCs Thippannappa Kamaknoor and Jagdev Guttedar and Dalit leader D.G. Sagar were present.

Ashada Fridays: New measures to ease darshan at temple atop Chamundi hills

In preparation for the upcoming Ashada Fridays, the Mysuru district administration has announced a series of new measures to ensure the smooth movement of devotees to the Chamundi Hill temple. Minister in-charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa, addressing the media on Wednesday, said that better coordination among key departments, particularly the police and temple authorities, has been instructed to manage the large footfall expected during the season. The Ashada season begins on June 27 with thousands of devotees expected to throng the hill temple every Friday. To reduce traffic congestion, entry of all private vehicles will be restricted on Fridays and weekends during the season. Instead, free shuttle buses will operate from a temporary bus stand at the foothills to ferry pilgrims to the temple. A new ₹2,000 fast-track darshan facility will be launched this year. Devotees opting for this service will be transported in air-conditioned buses and offered priority darshan. They will also receive a prasadam box containing laddu, kumkum, and other items. A ₹300 special darshan option will also continue, the Minister said. 'There will be no issuance of VIP or special passes during the season,' Mr. Mahadevappa clarified. 'A new queue system will be introduced to make even general darshan more efficient. We are ensuring that those buying barcoded tickets have a hassle-free experience,' he replied. The Minister also directed authorities to take steps to eliminate plastic usage on the hill. 'Awareness campaigns will be launched to educate the public on maintaining cleanliness and avoiding plastic,' he added. In response to concerns about inconvenience to devotees standing in long queues during VIP visits, Mr. Mahadevappa said that a joint system will be put in place by the Deputy Commissioner, Police Commissioner, and temple authorities to prevent disruptions for the general public. An action plan is being prepared to avoid the lapses witnessed last year. 'Police personnel have been instructed to treat devotees with respect and not harass them under the pretext of crowd management or security,' the Minister emphasised. Water sports in Kabini The government will launch water sports activities in the Kabini backwaters, to be managed by Jungle Lodges and Resorts Limited, the Minister announced. Expressing concern over Mysuru district's poor performance in the SSLC exams, the Minister said officials have been asked to take corrective measures to improve results next year. The online auction of 200 MUDA sites will take place later this month. Additionally, approval has been sought for the allotment of 57 Civic Amenity (CA) sites, he added. A survey of 6,000 acres of deemed forest land is underway, with 5,000 acres already examined. Lands not falling under forest classification as per guidelines will be reclaimed for government use, he said. Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, MLA G.T. Devegowda, and other senior officials were present.
