Meghan 'terrified' as Harry's decision over UK return 'sealed'
Threats from 'lunatics' and 'terrorists' will stop Harry and Meghan coming back to the UK, an expert says, but the Duke would have missed his dad on Father's Day
The growing distance between Prince Harry and the royal family was highlighted once again at the King's recent birthday celebrations, where the Duke of Sussex was notably absent. At Trooping the Colour – which marks the monarch's official birthday – King Charles celebrated alongside his close family, including wife Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, George, Charlotte and Louis. Sadly, Harry and his family were nowhere to be seen.
Following his High Court defeat in May, the Duke of Sussex, 40, revealed that he was hopeful of a reconciliation with his father, but said that wouldn't be possible until he could keep his wife and children 'safe' while in the UK.
Now, a royal expert says the chances of Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, becoming regular visitors to the UK and growing close to their cousins is looking increasingly unlikely because of Harry and his wife Meghan Markle 's very valid fears.
'Meghan understandably feels scared about coming to the UK with the children,' says former royal editor Duncan Larcombe. 'The threats are real and genuine. The threat is from lunatics, radical protesters that might want to make a name for themselves by jumping in front of them. Then of course you have the worst type, the terrorist threat. And there's no doubt Harry – and his family, as a result – is a huge target.'
While Meghan, 43, appears to be feeling more comfortable sharing her children with the world – with her viral Baby Momma dance video and a Disneyland holiday album posted to her socials – the idea of her returning to the UK with them is another matter.
A source has told the Mirror that while the mum-of-two is feeling more empowered today, it doesn't alter her safety worries.
'In some ways she's feeling stronger and she wants to share that,' our insider said. 'But she's still terrified of putting her kids at risk by coming back to the UK – any parent would panic if they were in Meghan's shoes.
'So even though Harry is really feeling the absence of his dad, especially after Trooping the Colour and Father's Day, the security stuff will probably always be an issue.
'He knows that things could've been so different if things had gone another way, but it's been five years since they left the UK and the chances of them coming back, even for a visit, seem slim to none. It's heartbreaking.'
During his controversial interview with the BBC in May, Harry revealed he 'would love reconciliation' with his family. And our expert believes it's highly likely the Prince now wishes recent events had taken a different course.
'Harry is a sensitive soul and always wore his heart on his sleeve, so whether he'd admit it publicly or not, I'm sure he's full of regrets and wishes he'd done things differently,' says Duncan. With Trooping the Colour and Father's Day falling on the same weekend, it was bound to make him look back at the happy relationships he once had with his brother and dad, and I'm sure he'd love to be able to rebuild those.'
Last month, Harry lost his bid to overturn the decision to deny him and his family state-funded, high level security provided for senior royals while in the UK.
As a result, he said he 'couldn't see a world' in which he would be able to bring Meghan and the children back to his homeland.
Duncan says the death of Harry's mother, Princess Diana, likely weighs heavily on the couple when it comes to their protection, as the absence of official Metropolitan Police protection was a 'contributing factor' in the accident that took her life.
But he stresses that whether the couple are 'liked' or not is irrelevant to their safety.
The key distinction, he says, is the difference between official royal security and private protection, which could mean the difference between life and death.
Official royal security gives royals round-the-clock, armed protection from top Met Police officers and allows MI5 to 'surround them in a ring' of top-level intelligence.
Given Meghan's understandable need to protect her children, Duncan suspects it would be very difficult for the family to feel safe without those measures in place.
'At big royal events, the security you actually see is the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot of undercover officers and agents working, too,' he says. 'Without the official support and security, Harry and Meghan are left with two or three bodyguards who are pretty blind to what the potential threats are.'

A number of celebrities were in attendance at the final day of the Royal Ascot on Saturday - where King Charles and Queen Camilla cheered on the horse racing events Celebrities and Royals mingled together for the 2025 final of the Royal Ascot on Saturday. King Charles III and Queen Camilla were in attendance to oversee an afternoon of high adrenaline - and high stakes - horse racing. His Majesty The King showcased his infamous quintessential style wearing a summer suit - with a pop of colour coming via a pastel yellow waistcoat. The King added a top hat to his look and carried a smart umbrella as the forecast carried a risk of downpours. Meanwhile the Queen donned a light-weight pleated white dress with a matching white jacket. She completed her look with a white had and white heels - and too was ready for any eventuality on the weather front by carrying an umbrella of her own. The royal couple arrived via horse drawn carriage and looked in high spirits as they prepared to supervise an afternoon of equestrian sport. Also in attendance was Princess Eugenie, 35, who stood out in a red dress and hat for the day ahead. While a range of celebrities also turned up to watch all the sun-soaked action. Good Morning Britain star Charlotte Hawkins was among those in attendance at the event on Saturday. She sported a floaty, yellow summer dress with a matching coloured hat resting lightly on her head. The TV star has been giving commentary for ITV about the event - and admitted she might sound more knowledgeable when speaking on air than she really is. In a behind-the-scenes post on Instagram, Charlotte revealed how she frantically makes notes about the various VIPs and royals that will be attending the races. She revealed: "Every day, we get sent an email with the carriage list, and we find out who is going to be in each of the carriages. But sometimes, you know, there are some names that we need to explain. Who they are, what they do." Sharing a look at her cheat sheet, she went on: "I do have this sort of master sheet, which has a whole load of people... And it does become a bit like a craft project, because I get my little handy scissors, I'll snip out who it is, and then I will piece it together on these sheets here. So I'm letting you into all my secrets here." She added: "This is all my own research, but I am actually just double checking that I've remembered exactly who is because there nothing worse than getting your people mixed up and you're talking about something as important as the Royal procession." Also among the stars in attendance on Saturday was EastEnders icon Rudolph Walker - who has played Patrick Truman on the BBC soap since 2001. The 85-year-old looked dapper in a suit with a cream waistcoat and tie, and a jaunty top hat. She made it specially for me... it matches the dress. "And then [hair stylist] Nina [Nikol] has done such a beautiful job on the hair, so you don't see any of the paraphernalia keeping it in place. So together, they really complement each other." She went on to explain that she got her dress from Self Portrait, her bag from LK Bennett, and her shoes from Zara. She then revealed she would be getting some advice later in the day from her mother. Nicki revealed: "Mummy, you're going to give us some good tips. Yes, she is. She's going to stay here and tell us what we should be betting on. But looking forward to today, absolutely." Punters stood to win impressive prizes by betting on the right horse - while those taking part in the sport could win as much as £1 million if they managed to ride their horse to the finish line fastest. Reviewing the events, Paddy Power notes: "Every renewal is worth at least £110,000, the minimum value of a Group 1 has been increased to £650,000, while the most lucrative contests of the week boast £1,000,000 funds." Shearing details of the day ahead, the betting company added: "Among the attractions are Treanmor and Moments Of Joy going head-to-head in the opening Chesham Stakes at 14:30, while the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at 15:40 looks a wide-open contest as Lazzat, Inisherin, Santono Reve, Storm Boy and Topgear all have claims." Despite the Royal Ascot being a fixture in the society diary, horse racing fans were shocked this week when celebrations descended into bloody violence. Two men came to blows at the grounds on Friday, leaving fans stunned. The Daily Mail reported on the violence, revealing: "A group of men attempt to separate the brawling pair. The group could briefly be heard telling the fighting men: 'Stop, stop, boys.' "While one man, dressed in a grey suit, was dragged away, the other was picked up from the ground with blood gushing from his face. "The bloodied racegoer wiped his visage and then bloodied his cream trousers as he seemingly yelled at the man he had fought only moments before." It is unclear what caused the unexpected burst of violence.

King Charles' sweet frozen-in-time tribute to loved one who died decades ago
When one of King Charles's loved ones passed away over two decades ago, he was left totally bereft, experts have revealed in a new documentary - and he was so heartbroken he has kept several tributes to them in one of his royal homes King Charles has a seriously sentimental side - and this heartbreaking tribute to a lost loved one proves just how deep it runs. More than 20 years ago, Charles lost someone who had been incredibly important to him, and experts have revealed that to this day, he has kept a few key aspects of their belongings in his home in exactly the same place - as if they might walk back in the door any moment now. The revelation came in the new Channel 5 documentary, Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary, which details the monarch's relationship with one of his absolutely favourite residences. Birkhall is positioned very near the Royal Family's famous Balmoral estate, where they gather every summer and spend weeks engaged in countryside pursuits like fishing and picnics, in the privacy afforded to them by the Scottish countryside. The nearby Birkhall is a much more modest home compared to the grandeur of Balmoral, and since his childhood, it is said by the experts to have been one of Charles's favourite places to spend time - in part because of who it previously belonged to, his beloved grandmother, the Queen Mother. "For Charles, she was this haven of security and affection, and laughter and love," explained former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond. The expert continued that during Charles's unhappy school years in the north of Scotland, his grandmother's home of Birkhall, and the warm relationship they shared, offered the young prince some welcome respite. "When he was at Gordonstoun school in the north of Scotland, he would, whenever he could, take the two-hour journey to Birkhall to be with his beloved granny." When the Queen Mother died in 2002 at her home of Royal Lodge, Windsor - at the ripe old age of 101 - the Scottish retreat of Birkhall went to Charles, who was left utterly bereft at the loss. "For Charles, the loss of his grandmother was absolutely devastating," explained Jennie, but after taking over the property, he started undertaking essential refurbishments, updating the heating systems, and redecorating much of the place with the help of his now-wife Camilla. However, Charles made sure that the Queen Mother's presence is still felt in the house, "Her coats are still hanging up, on the is really sweet," revealed expert Afua Hagan. This heartbreaking nod to his grandmother in his favourite home is not the only way he has paid tribute to the Queen Mother, the expert also revealed that he has kept the barometer she used to use to check the weather hanging up. The Queen Mother was also a huge fan of clocks, the experts revealed, and used to have eight in the dining room alone - all set to "slightly different times" so they would chime out of sync with one another. The Queen Mother's guests were said to have been sent round the bend by this - but this reaction was something the quirky royal "thoroughly enjoyed". Charles has kept her clocks hanging up, it is revealed in the documentary, "He kept all eight of those grandfather clocks in the dining room," Afua explained, "but he set them all to the same time, so it didn't drive everybody as bonkers as it had done before." A royal author has previously claimed that the Queen Mother was actually "more of a mother" to her grandson than the late Queen Elizabeth herself - putting this down to the former monarch's gruelling schedule as head of state. "In some ways, the Queen Mother was a mother figure to Charles just because the Queen became Queen when Charles was so young. There were a lot of tours of the Commonwealth and every time the Queen had to go away, Prince Charles stayed with the Queen Mother," Gareth Russell, who has written a biography of the Queen Mother explained to People magazine. "They had a great sense of humour, and she always encouraged him." Birkhall: The King's Secret Sanctuary, airs Saturday 21 June at 7.30pm on Channel 5.
