
Giacometti bust goes unsold: How do art auctions work?
Expected to be the highlight of Sotheby's sale in New York, Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti's 1955 bust Grande tête mince (Grande tête de Diego) failed to find a buyer last week.
One prominent reason for this failure was likely the bronze head's estimate — a whopping $70 million. In contrast to the 2015 auction record of $141.3 million for Giacometti's 1947 sculpture Pointing Man, the $70 million figure proved too intimidating.
The auction market disappointment came mere days after a $30 million Andy Warhol painting was withdrawn from a Christie's sale when the consignor, who had put the work on auction, arguably realised it might not meet its asking price.
These setbacks are seen as a sign of a struggling market, one that may require a reassessment of pricing expectations and collector sentiment.
What are auction houses?
An auction house essentially serves as an intermediary between sellers and buyers, receiving commissions from both. They may task a team to source and screen artworks based on market demand.
'Every auction is curated based on the different arts we want to feature, modern or contemporary,' Manoj Mansukhani, Chief Marketing Officer, AstaGuru Auction House, told The Indian Express. 'We need to create a mix that appeals to both seasoned collectors and new buyers. A few months are also dedicated to prepare the catalogue.'
When is an artwork put up for auction?
'Historically, the primary reasons that prompt individuals to consign artworks to auction are the three D's: debt, death, and divorce', according to the Sotheby's Institute of Art. 'However, other factors such as a shift in personal taste or the need to downsize may also influence the decision to sell.'
An auction house may be alerted about the existence of a rare or high-value artwork and subsequently collaborate with the owner to facilitate its sale. Christie's, for instance, remained in touch with Oslo University Hospital for over 13 years before it put MF Husain's 1954 canvas Untitled (Gram Yatra) on sale at an auction in New York in March 2025. This evocative homage to rural and pastoral life in India achieved a remarkable $13.7 million (approximately ₹118 crore), setting a new benchmark as the most expensive work of Indian art ever sold at an auction.
How is the value of an artwork determined?
The value of an artwork is estimated once it is verified and its provenance and authenticity are checked.
Before a lot (comprising an item or a collection of items) is put up for auction, it is assigned a low and high estimate, providing a range of the expected value it could achieve. The auction catalogues reflect these estimates alongside the details of the artwork. The lower estimate typically serves as the reserve price, the minimum a seller will accept for the artwork, and below which a sale will not be made.
The Husain mural sold at nearly four times its higher estimate of $3.5 million.
The signature on the artwork and its provenance traced from the artist's studio onwards play a significant role in its valuation. Where it was exhibited and published are also factors taken into account.
Similarly, its past or present ownership may also elevate the value. In 2016, Greek Landscape by the 'Grammarian of Art', Akbar Padamsee fetched Rs 19.9 crore at a Saffronart sale in Delhi, then a record price for the modernist. The piece was owned by Krishen Khanna, Padamsee's fellow artist and close friend, who had purchased it from artist-collector Bal Chhabda (also their close friend) over five decades back for Rs 1,000.
After Saffronart sold Amrita Sher-Gil's canvas The Story Teller for Rs 61.8 crore in 2023 – then a record high price for Indian art – Dinesh Vazirani, co-founder of Saffronart told The Indian Express, 'The importance of the work in the oeuvre of the artist also plays a significant role. So, an MF Husain (who was very prolific) from the 1950s and 1960s compared to a later Husain will have a completely different (higher) value, and it will be the same for an SH Raza from the 1980s, a VS Gaitonde from the 1970s and 1980s, and a Tyeb Mehta from the 1990s (the periods during which each of these masters produced their most critically acclaimed works).'
It is largely believed that the best works of Indian modernists are perhaps already with serious collectors and therefore rarely come under the auction hammer. When they do, they grab instant attention and escalating bids.
In addition, some artists were less prolific than others, leading to even fewer of their works in the market. Sher-Gil, for instance, is known to have produced fewer than 200 paintings, of which a large number are with the National Gallery of Modern Art, and some are with her estate. This leaves approximately only 30-40 of her works with private collectors.
How a work has been preserved or if there has been heavy restoration are considerations. Additionally, some media are traditionally more commercially favoured than others. For instance, canvases by the same artist are likely to be priced higher than drawings.
A particular artwork might be distinctive in an artist's oeuvre. For instance, in the 1960s, VS Gaitonde had already started moving towards abstraction, inspired by Zen philosophy and spiritual teachings. His 1961 untitled oil with layers of pigment in tones of blue belonged to the same genre, but was cited as one of his last few horizontal canvases. When it came up for auction at a Saffronart sale in 2021, it fetched Rs 39.98 crore — a record for the highest price achieved for a work of Indian art in an auction at the time.
Along with the historical sale price of similar works, the current market demand for the artist's work is also used to calculate the auction estimate.
If there are no bids for a lot, or if the bidding does not reach the reserve price, the lot is bought in, meaning it remains unsold. Unsold artworks are usually returned to the consignor, who could ask the auction house to offer the artwork for auction again. This may be done after a delay, since the unsold work is considered burned, making it more difficult to find a buyer immediately at a similar price.
A different scenario emerges if the artwork has a guarantee, done to ensure that it secures a pre-decided minimum price on its sale. This is practised occasionally for high-value or significant works that come up for auction. A guarantee may be offered by the auction house itself, in what is called a house guarantee. Alternately, it may be provided through an external undertaking, through a collector, gallery, or art dealer known as a third-party guarantee.
The Giacometti sculpture, put on sale from the estate of real estate magnate Sheldon H Solow, who died in 2020, came to the auction without a minimum guarantee.

Europe's growing fear: How Trump might use US tech dominance against it
When President Donald Trump issued an executive order in February against the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court for investigating Israel for war crimes, Microsoft was suddenly thrust into the middle of a geopolitical fight. For years, Microsoft had supplied the court — which is based in The Hague in the Netherlands and investigates and prosecutes human rights breaches, genocides and other crimes of international concern — with digital services such as email. Trump's order abruptly threw that relationship into disarray by barring U.S. companies from providing services to the prosecutor, Karim Khan. Soon after, Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Washington, helped turn off Khan's ICC email account, freezing him out of communications with colleagues just a few months after the court had issued an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel for his country's actions in the Gaza Strip. Microsoft's swift compliance with Trump's order, reported earlier by The Associated Press, shocked policymakers across Europe. It was a wake-up call for a problem far bigger than just one email account, stoking fears that the Trump administration would leverage America's tech dominance to penalize opponents, even in allied countries like the Netherlands. 'The ICC showed this can happen,' said Bart Groothuis, a former head of cybersecurity for the Dutch Ministry of Defense who is now a member of the European Parliament. 'It's not just fantasy.' Groothuis once supported U.S. tech firms but has done a '180-degree flip-flop,' he said. 'We have to take steps as Europe to do more for our sovereignty.' Some at the ICC are now using Proton, a Swiss company that provides encrypted email services, three people with knowledge of the communications said. Microsoft said the decision to suspend Khan's email had been made in consultation with the ICC. The company said it had since enacted policy changes that had been in the works before the episode to protect customers in similar geopolitical situations in the future. When the Trump administration sanctioned four additional ICC judges this month, their email accounts were not suspended, the company said. Brad Smith, Microsoft's president, said concerns raised by the ICC episode were a 'symptom' of a larger erosion of trust between the United States and Europe. 'The ICC issue added fuel to a fire that was already burning,' he said. Khan has been on leave from the ICC since last month, pending a sexual misconduct investigation. He has denied the allegations. The episode has set off alarms across Europe about how dependent European governments, businesses and citizens are on U.S. tech companies like Microsoft for essential digital infrastructure — and how hard it will be to disentangle themselves. Casper Klynge, a former Danish and European Union diplomat who worked for Microsoft, said the episode was in many ways the 'smoking gun that many Europeans had been looking for.' 'If the U.S. administration goes after certain organizations, countries or individuals, the fear is American companies are obligated to comply,' said Klynge, who now works for a cybersecurity company. 'It's had a profound impact.' The tech debate adds to an increasingly fractious U.S.-European relationship over trade, tariffs and the war in Ukraine. Trump and Vice President JD Vance have criticized how Europe regulates U.S. tech companies, and U.S. officials have made digital oversight and taxation part of ongoing trade negotiations. European regulators have argued that they need to be able to police the biggest digital platforms in their own countries without worrying that they will face political pressure and punishment from a foreign government. 'If we don't build adequate capacity within Europe, then we won't be able to make political choices anymore,' said Alexandra Geese, a member of the European Parliament. Since Edward Snowden's leak of scores of documents in 2013 detailing widespread U.S. surveillance of digital communications, Europeans have sought to diminish their reliance on U.S. tech. Lawmakers and regulators have targeted Apple, Meta, Google and others for anticompetitive business practices, privacy-invading services, and the spread of disinformation and other divisive content. Yet without viable alternatives, institutions across the region have turned to U.S. digital services. Amazon, Google, Microsoft and other U.S. firms control more than 70% of the cloud computing market in Europe, which is the essential way for storing files, retrieving data and running other programs, according to Synergy Research Group. The ICC has been a longtime customer of Microsoft, which provides the court with services including the Office software suite and software for evidence analysis and file storage, according to an ICC lawyer who declined to be identified discussing internal procedures. Microsoft has also provided cybersecurity software to help the court withstand digital attacks from adversaries like Russia, which is being investigated for war crimes in Ukraine. In February, after Trump issued penalties against Khan, Microsoft met with ICC officials to decide how to respond. They concluded that Microsoft's broader work for the court could continue but that Khan's email should be suspended. He switched his correspondence to another email account, said a person who has communicated with him. Sara Elizabeth Dill, a lawyer who specializes in sanctions compliance, said the Trump administration was increasingly using sanctions and executive orders to target international institutions, universities and other organizations, forcing companies to make hard choices about how to comply. 'This is a quagmire and places these corporations in a very difficult position,' she said. How tech companies with global services respond is especially important, she added, 'as the broad repercussions are what people and organizations are primarily worried about.' Microsoft and other U.S. companies have sought to reassure European customers. On Monday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella visited the Netherlands and announced new 'sovereign solutions' for European institutions, including legal and data security protections for 'a time of geopolitical volatility.' Amazon and Google have also announced policies aimed at European customers. Still, many institutions are exploring alternatives. In the Netherlands, the 'subject of digital autonomy and sovereignty has the full attention of the central government,' Eddie van Marum, the state secretary of digitalization in the Ministry of Interior Affairs, said in a statement. The country is working with European providers on new solutions, he said. In Denmark, the digital ministry is testing alternatives to Microsoft Office. In Germany, the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein is also taking steps to cut its use of Microsoft. In the European Union, officials have announced plans to spend billions of euros on new artificial intelligence data centers and cloud computing infrastructure that rely less on U.S. companies. Groothuis, the Dutch member of the European Parliament, said lawmakers in Brussels were discussing policy changes that would encourage governments to favor buying tech services from EU-based companies. 'The situation is not tenable, and we see a big push from European governments to become more independent and more resilient,' said Andy Yen, CEO of Proton. European tech companies see an opportunity to win customers from their U.S. rivals. Cloud service providers like Intermax Group, based in the Netherlands, and Exoscale, based in Switzerland, said they had seen a jump in new business. 'A few years ago, everyone was saying, 'They're our trusted partners,'' Ludo Baauw, Intermax's CEO, said of U.S. tech companies. 'There's been a radical change.'

Central banks in Asia scale back currency intervention as dollar weakens

The central banks of India and Malaysia have reduced the size of some derivatives positions they use to weaken their currencies. Taiwan has allowed its currency to surge against the dollar in recent weeks and dropped hints it would be comfortable with more if the moves were 'orderly.' South Korea's giant national pension fund has ended its five-month support of the won. A major reason for these moves is a simple change in the market landscape: The dollar has tumbled more than 7 per cent this year, easing pressure on emerging market currencies. But strategists and investors also point to the risk of a backlash from US President Donald Trump, amid rising speculation that currency policies will be on the table during a series of ongoing — and high stakes — trade negotiations. 'The threat of being labeled a currency manipulator by the US, especially during this period of tariff negotiations, will act as a deterrent to further heavy FX intervention in local markets,' said Rajeev De Mello, a Geneva-based portfolio manager at GAMA Asset Management SA. The shifting approach of Asia's central banks to defending their currencies underscores the sweeping changes in global markets since the election of Trump, whose on again-off again tariff threats have roiled asset prices and raised once unthinkable questions about the dollar's place in the global trading system. Korea confirmed last month that it had held currency talks with the US, sending the won higher amid talk that Trump wants a weaker dollar. But White House chief economist Stephen Miran has denied the idea Washington is working on secret deals to depreciate the greenback, saying the US continues to have a strong dollar policy. The greenback has plummeted against major currencies this year, suffering drops of around 10 per cent against the euro and the Swiss franc. Best bets Traders are now trying to game out which currencies have the most to gain from a period of reduced intervention. The Korean won and the Malaysian ringgit are two obvious candidates, since both countries have large trade surpluses, said Gautam Kalani, portfolio manager for BlueBay fixed income, emerging markets, at RBC Global Asset Management. Reduced intervention will speed up the appreciation of these currencies, he said. The Taiwan dollar is also being hotly tipped by strategists. Although Taiwan's central bank is still likely to use intervention to keep volatility in check, most market participants think it will allow the local currency to appreciate further even after hitting multi-year highs. That suggests room to build on what has already been a widespread rally against the dollar: Taiwan's currency has surged 11 per cent against the greenback this year, making it the region's best performer. The Korean won is up almost 8 per cent, while the Malaysian ringgit is around 5 per cent higher. The retreat from intervention isn't unanimous across Asia. Bank Indonesia pushed back against volatility on Thursday as Middle East tensions hit emerging market currencies. The Philippines' central bank has sent mixed messages, calling intervention futile but also saying it might have to do so 'more seriously' if a current slide in the peso continues. The People's Bank of China continues to keep its currency under a tight leash. But for some of emerging Asia's most interventionist central banks, the calculus appears to have shifted in favor of a less hands-on approach. The US Treasury refrained from labeling any country a currency manipulator in its latest foreign-exchange report, released in June. However, it said China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Vietnam all met two out of three of its criteria.
