Smile-Link banks on digital, AI tools for recovery & growth

The Sun10-05-2025

SHAH ALAM: Smile-Link Healthcare Global Bhd, the parent company of Drs Wong and Partners Dental Surgeons, expects a modest recovery in the second half of 2025 through cost-cutting efforts, downsizing and upgrades in digital and artificial intelligence-powered dental tools.
Managing director Datuk Dr Wong Ruen Yuan said this recovery also depends on macroeconomic factors such as interest rates and consumer disposable income.
'We do not expect revenue to improve in the first half of the year, as there's nothing particularly promising.
'The second half may improve, but any increase would likely be modest – around 5% to 10%. It will not be a dramatic jump. That said, we are seeing some encouraging signs,' he told SunBiz in an interview.
Wong said Smile-Link's recovery is supported by international patients from Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Australia who are drawn to Malaysia's affordable and high-quality dental care.
'We get a lot of patients from overseas – around 10% to 20% of our revenue comes from them. Those who migrate from Malaysia to Australia or the UK, when they want to do treatment, return to Malaysia. Even patients from Singapore, where the cost of living and operating standards are significantly higher,' he said.
These patients generally seek high-value dental procedures, such as implants and cosmetic treatments, rather than basic care. 'They typically do not visit for routine services, it is usually for more complex or specialised procedures,' Wong said.
He rebutted the perception that Malaysia's dental care lags behind that of developed nations.
'There is a common belief that we are behind countries like Germany or the United States, but in reality, we offer comparable quality at just 20% of the cost.'
Many overseas patients return for treatment because they trust the standards.
'There is a common perception that countries like Singapore or Thailand are regional leaders in healthcare. However, whether in medical or dental services, Malaysia upholds comparable standards. Even in prosthetics, we have advanced towards digital integration and AI-driven technologies,' Wong said.
For example, Wong said, the group started digitalising patient records last year.
'Previously, we relied on handwritten records stored in the lab. We have now transitioned to the CLN system, which links all our clinics. This allows us to access a patient's records even if they were treated at a different branch,' he explained.
He shared that the group has allocated between RM1.5 million and RM2 million this year for internal upgrades.
'Our focus is on upgrading our internal infrastructure, including replacing ageing dental equipment such as treatment chairs over a decade old, and ensuring all clinics are fully digitalised,' Wong said.
He added that the group has no plans to open new clinics this year due to the lengthy break-even period and increasing pricing pressure from independent practitioners offering aggressive discounts.
'We cannot arbitrarily reduce our fees, as doing so would compromise service quality and sustainability. However, new solo practitioners often enter the market with lower pricing and frequent promotional offers, which puts pressure on the industry. As a result, expansion is not our immediate priority,' Wong said.
He highlighted Smile-Link's integration of AI and digital tools to enhance treatment quality, reduce costs and improve operational efficiency.
'Given the current economic climate, patients are generally reluctant to pay more for treatment. However, by leveraging AI technology, we can reduce treatment time, enhance the quality of care, and lower material costs,' Wong said.
Smile-Link posted a pre-tax profit of RM715,000 for the six months ended Dec 31, 2024 – a reversal from a RM3.99 million loss in the same period of the previous year. The improvement was primarily driven by cost-cutting measures, including selling underperforming clinics and ongoing internal restructuring efforts to enhance service quality and operational efficiency.
However, revenue declined 17.7% year-on-year to RM15 million from RM18.2 million, mainly attributed to downsizing its clinic network, which was reduced from 86 to 60.
The company remains focused on cost efficiency and service upgrades while working toward resolving its delayed audited financial statement submission and trading suspension on the LEAP Market.
As of end-March, Smile-Link remained under trading suspension on the LEAP Market due to its failure to announce audited financial statements for the 18-month financial period ended June 30, 2024, by the Oct 31, 2024, deadline.
The company replaced its previous external auditors, HLB Ler Lum Chew PLT, via extraordinary general meetings in January and appointed Messrs Ong and Wong as new auditors on March 13.
Bursa Malaysia did not grant a time extension for the delayed filing, and the audit is ongoing.
In line with LEAP Market Listing Requirements, the company is issuing monthly updates under Rule 6.14(3) until the matter is resolved.

Singapore PM Wong to visit China, where he will discuss cooperation to strengthen rules-based order

SINGAPORE: The world is in a state of flux, and countries big and small have to do their part to manage geopolitical tensions and rivalry carefully so as to minimise the risk of conflict and war, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. In an interview with Chinese state broadcaster CCTV ahead of his first visit to China as prime minister, he said a key priority is to discuss broader regional and global developments with Chinese leaders, and explore how both countries can work together to strengthen multilateralism and the rules-based international order. He also said that he hopes to build closer ties with the Chinese leaders, especially with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. His visit from Sunday (June 22) to Thursday (June 26) was announced on June 20 by Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun, who said PM Wong will be meeting Xi, Li and Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People's Congress. The visit comes as strategic rivalry between the United States and China has triggered supply chain disruptions, technological decoupling, and growing fears that other countries may eventually be forced to pick sides. The US has also imposed sweeping tariffs on much of the world, including Singapore, with particularly high duties on China. 'We are in the midst of a very messy and unpredictable transition,' PM Wong said in the interview, aired on the CCTV programme Leaders Talk on June 20. He noted that the US had helped shape the global order after World War II – an order that benefited all countries, including China and the US itself – which is now under strain as America signals a desire to pull back from it. 'There is no country in the world today that can replace the US, no one. So what is our alternative? I think frankly, at this stage, no one knows the answer,' he said. PM Wong said it will take time for a new equilibrium to emerge. Unlike the post–Cold War era, which was dominated by a single superpower, he believes the new global order will be shaped by countries both large and small. But in the meantime, the transition is potentially dangerous. 'Without clear global leadership and coordination, there are many things that can go wrong in this world,' he warned, urging all countries to manage geopolitical tensions and rivalry carefully to minimise the risk of conflict and war. He said the onus is on all countries to continue working together and find win-win cooperation, especially in areas of shared interest. 'And then step by step, we can all work together to lay the groundwork for a new and more stable global order that may emerge in the years ahead. It will take time, but we should all do our part to shape this new global order.' PM Wong will emphasise the importance of upholding a rules-based multilateral order when he attends a World Economic Forum event in Tianjin next week. The event, officially called the Annual Meeting of the New Champions, is commonly known as Summer Davos. In the interview with CCTV, he acknowledged that today's multilateral system is not perfect, but said it should be reformed and improved – not abandoned – to better serve all countries. He explained the US' turn towards anti-globalisation, saying that Americans feel that they are not enjoying the commensurate benefits. Responding to a suggestion by the CCTV journalist that imposing heavy tariffs on much of the world might not be the proper way for the US to compensate themselves for feeling short-changed by globalism, PM Wong said: 'We do not believe it is, but as I said, the administration reflects a growing sentiment amongst the American people that they are paying too high a price to be the world's policeman, to underwrite the global system, and they have not benefited. 'If America were to take an enlightened self-interest, not just a very narrow perspective of its interest, but a wider view of its interests, this system has benefited America too. 'But the feelings are real, because globalisation over the decades has resulted in many cities and towns in America being completely de-industrialised, jobs being taken away, people losing their jobs, incomes stagnating. So the sentiments do exist. And when these sentiments exist, politicians react to the sentiments, and they take actions which they think will respond to these sentiments. That is what is happening in the US today.' Asked about his top concern for Singapore, PM Wong said the increasingly fragmented global environment poses challenges for a small, open economy like Singapore, which depends heavily on trade. But while global supply chains are being reshaped and countries seek greater self-sufficiency, he stressed that trade will continue, albeit in new configurations. Singapore, he said, must stay competitive and relevant to remain a key node in shifting trade and investment flows, and is working with like-minded partners to uphold free trade and a rules-based system. Within Asean, efforts are under way to deepen integration and lower trade barriers. Singapore is also strengthening ties with key Asian economies such as China, India, Japan and South Korea, while reaching out to further markets in the European Union, Latin America, and Africa. 'I believe in every crisis, there will always be opportunities, and so we are finding ways to seize new opportunities for ourselves and for other countries,' he said. Wong described the relationship between Singapore and China as 'a very close and steadfast partnership', nurtured over generations of leaders. 'So I hope to do the same in my visit with Chinese leaders, especially with President Xi and Premier Li, and I think the close ties at the leadership level sets the tone for the overall relationship.' A key objective of his trip to China will be to reaffirm a shared commitment to bilateral cooperation, as Singapore and China mark the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties. The cooperation led to the three government-to-government projects of Suzhou Industrial Park, Tianjin Eco-city and Chongqing Connectivity Initiative. Asked if he envisioned introducing a new project during his term, PM Wong said that he does not consider existing projects as completed and done with, but platforms that can continually host new areas of cooperation. This is in line with bilateral ties, which were upgraded in 2023 to an All-Round High-Quality Future-Oriented Partnership. PM Wong is no stranger to China, having visited almost every year since entering politics in 2011. He described the transformation he witnessed in China as 'nothing short of an economic miracle'. In the interview, he expressed confidence in China's economy despite global headwinds, citing its strong track record and capable leaders who are willing to adapt. Most of all, he said, his optimism stems from the determination of the Chinese people to keep moving forward and improve their lives. 'It's a remarkable transformation, and I continue to wish China every success in its journey of modernisation,' he said. - The Straits Times/ANN

4.8 million Sara recipients use MyKad to buy essential items

GEORGE TOWN: A total of 4.8 million out of 5.4 million recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid have used their MyKad to purchase basic necessities at registered premises nationwide as of this month. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said Perlis recorded the highest usage rate at 94 per cent, followed by 93 per cent in Sabah and Kedah, while Penang recorded 88 per cent. She said the figures reflect the growing effectiveness of the initiative, supported by various awareness and promotional efforts at both federal and state levels. "The ministry will continue to strengthen awareness campaigns to ensure more people benefit from this government aid, which is aimed at easing their financial burden. "We have also significantly expanded the number of recipients from 700,000 to 5.4 million since April," she told reporters during a Sara outreach programme at a hypermarket here today. At the event, Lim met with 100 Sara recipients in Penang as part of the ministry's effort to engage directly with urban communities. She said to date, 3,700 retail premises have registered under the programme nationwide, enabling recipients to shop closer to home. In Penang alone, 190 such premises are available. Lim added that since May 1, the programme was enhanced by expanding the list of eligible items to 14 categories, including household and personal hygiene products, medicines, and school supplies like uniforms and shoes. The maximum Sara aid for 2025 has been raised to RM2,100 from RM1,200 — a 75 per cent increase, she said. In total, the combined allocation for the Sara and Rahmah Cash Aid (STR) programmes has been raised to RM13 billion this year, marking the highest cash aid provision in the country's history. – BERNAMA Nation Feb 8, 2025 @ 12:40am Octogenarian rides pillion 20km to buy essentials after receiving Sara aid Nation Feb 5, 2025 @ 11:41pm Govt expands Sara programme, enhancing access for 700,000 recipients Nation Apr 6, 2025 @ 7:43pm Sara aid a lifeline for families coping with post-Raya expenses Nation Jan 14, 2025 @ 9:07am [EXPLAINER] Sara aid: Direct financial aid through MyKad
