Ranchi dist transport dept ups drive against violators

Ranchi: The district transport department has intensified its drive against traffic rule violators in a bid to promote safe mobility of people on city roads and curb tax evasion by vehicle owners.
The officials have been conducting joint inspection drives across the district to inspect and verify the validity and authenticity of documents such as fitness and pollution certificates, driving licences and tax receipts.
The team examined around 170 vehicles, including e-rickshaws, public buses and three-wheeler passenger vehicles on Saturday. A total of 52 vehicles were found flouting norms and fined around Rs 2 lakh.
Speaking to TOI, Ranchi DTO Akhilesh Kumar said, "Our aim is not to impose hefty fines on the vehicle owners or the people who are earning their livelihood by driving vehicles. We are trying to generate awareness among people on the importance of maintaining vehicle documents. Many times in accident cases, people have to face a lot of trouble in claiming insurance as the documents are not maintained,"
The department has been regularly conducting inspection drives against defaulters and would continue to do so in future, he added.

In a drive against the defaulters in multiple locations across the city on May 22, the transport department examined around 189 vehicles, out of which 26 were fined, and five vehicles were seized for not maintaining vehicle documents and carrying passengers beyond their capacities.
Around Rs 6 lakh was collected as a fine.
In April, the district transport department and the city traffic police launched a drive across the city against private school vans operating in the city, which have been flouting guidelines laid by the transport department.
Out of 113 vehicles checked, around 70% flouted the norms. In some vehicles which has a carrying capacity of around 10 students, they were operating at double the size of their capacity.
Deputy commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri on Saturday directed officials concerned to adopt 'zero tolerance' against drink driving to curb road accidents. He also urged them to crack down against those found taping or tampering with number plates to avoid fines.
A total of 226 accidents were reported in the district between January and March. A total of 164 persons lost their lives, 11 sustained serious injuries, and 108 suffered minor injuries in the accidents.

Vijayawada: The NTR district administration has taken up the 'Clean Air' initiative in a big way under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), by launching a series of integrated measures aimed at reducing air pollution and improving environmental standards in Vijayawada. Action is being taken to identify and penalise vehicles emitting high levels of pollutants. Additionally, pollution caused by VTPS ash is to be addressed using advanced technology. On the solid waste management front, construction of proper roads, pavement development, canal bank greening, and mechanical sweeping are being prioritised. The administration is also enforcing ban on single-use plastic, particularly in shopping complexes, farmers' markets, and commercial zones. "All departments must report on plastic control measures and explore alternatives. Awareness campaigns among street vendors are equally important," Dr. Lakshmi added. A stakeholder workshop under NCAP has been scheduled for July 4 to discuss and finalise the next phase of clean air actions.

JDA to construct 71 sector roads
Jaipur: With city roads deteriorating due to potholes, craters, and uneven surfaces, the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has decided to construct 71 sector roads under its annual road maintenance programme. Though these roads were part of the Master Plan 2025, the JDA had been unable to execute them earlier due to various delays. Now, a portion of the road maintenance fund will be allocated for their construction. "We have four categories of sector roads – A, B, C, and D. Out of 226 proposed A and B category roads in the Master Plan, 71 will now be developed. The civic body has already granted administrative and financial approval of Rs 454 crore for the project," a senior JDA official said. During the previous Congress govt, sector roads were prioritised by category, with 'A' being the most critical. A JDA engineer added that these 71 roads were selected based on future traffic needs and planned settlements along both sides. "Several rounds of discussions were held between zone deputy commissioners and zonal engineers to finalise the list of sector roads. We also considered the availability of land and the number of encroachments to be removed before selection. Hopefully, construction will proceed smoothly," said a JDA engineer. Officials confirmed that out of the 71 sector roads, six will be developed near Niwaru Road and Govindpura, 13 near Muralipura, nine in Mansarovar and Bhankrota, two near Delhi and Agra Roads, and 16 in the Vartika area. "Tenders have already been floated for some of them," an official added.

Experts roped in for busy trafffic crossings
Jaipur: To address growing traffic congestion, the Jaipur Commissionerate's traffic department plans to engage a traffic institution for expert solutions at two major city junctions—the MI Road–Tonk Road Junction near the Yadgar traffic headquarters and the Govt Hostel Crossing near the Commissionerate headquarters. Officials said the rapid increase in vehicular traffic has turned these crossings into daily bottlenecks. The situation is expected to worsen with the upcoming construction of Jaipur Metro Line 2 by the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC). The main line will pass through the Govt Hostel Crossing, while a spur from Chandpole Gate will link Line 1 and Line 2 at the same point. JMRC also has plans for metro connectivity to Ajmeri Gate. DCP (traffic) Shaheen C confirmed that preliminary surveys and measures have been implemented. "We are now seeking expert technical input and will appoint a third-party agency to suggest solutions. Institutions like MNIT and others are under consideration," she said. Meanwhile, the traffic department installed sensor-enabled signals at these two crossings.
