Bengal mourns death of poet Daud Haider

Kolkata, The literary circle in Kolkata on Monday mourned the death of Daud Haider, an exiled Bangladeshi poet, in Berlin and said his poems reflected anger and rebellion.
He lived in India for 13 years before leaving for Germany where he died at the age of 73.
Sahitya Akademy Award-winning Bengali poet Subodh Sarkar told PTI that Haider's poems reflected anger and rebellion and the one for which he was expelled had a controversial line.
He was exiled by the Sheikh Mujibur Rehman government in 1974 after the poem criticising radicalism and bigotry in the country was published in a Bengali daily.
Haider's settling in Berlin was facilitated by Nobel laureate writer Gunter Grass at a time he was not sure about his future moves, Sarkar said adding that lately, his works resonated with a yearning to come back to his roots, his motherland Bangladesh.
Sarkar said he and Haider were in touch and used to make long-distance phone calls from Germany and talk to him for 30-40 minutes.
Recalling Haider's visit to Kolkata during the late '80s, Sarkar said, "We met at the residence of poet Sunil Gangopadhyay several times."
He recalled after living in India for several years, Haider's life took another turn as he headed to Germany and spent 35 years of his life there.
Haider died in Berlin on Saturday and his family and friends confirmed it the next day.
Condoling the death, another Sahitya Akademi-winning poet Joy Goswami said, "Haider was among the foremost poets in Bengali literature belonging to the league of Annada Sankar Roy, Aloke Ranjan Das Gupta and Shakti Chattopadhyay. His demise will certainly create a void."
Goswami recalled as a young poet associated with 'Desh', a prominent Bengali literary magazine, in his earlier years, he used to see Haider chatting with litterateurs like Sunil Gangopadhyay and Shakti Chattopadhyay but did not have much interaction with him on personal front then.
His poems left an indelible mark in the minds of readers, Goswami said.
Born on February 21, 1952, in Pabna district in erstwhile East Pakistan, currently Bangladesh, Haider served as the literary editor of the daily newspaper Sangbad in the early 1970s.

He alleged that during the pre-release event of the film Retro, which stars actor Surya, the actor made statements that hurt the sentiments of tribal communities and caused serious offence. Rathod further claimed that the actor's comparison of tribal people to Pakistani terrorists was racially insensitive. What Vijay Deverakonda had said During the pre-release event of Surya's film Retro, Vijay addressed the Pahalgam terror attack and said, 'The solution to what is happening in Kashmir is also to educate them (terrorists) and ensure they don't get brainwashed. What will they achieve? Kashmir belongs to India, and Kashmiris are ours. India doesn't even need to attack Pakistan because Pakistanis themselves are fed up with their government and will attack them if this continues. The actor clarified that his intention was to promote unity, emphasising that India is one, its people are one, and the nation must progress together. He expressed disbelief at the idea that, while advocating for national solidarity, he would deliberately target or discriminate against any community, all of whom he considers part of his larger family. He concluded, "If any part of my message was misunderstood or hurtful, I express my sincere regret. My only aim was to speak of peace, progress, and togetherness. I remain committed to using my platform to uplift and unify — never to divide. Vijay Deverakonda."

Release of Union Minister Suresh Gopi-starrer movie hits hurdle

Agency: PTI Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 22 (PTI) The release of the Suresh Gopi-starrer Malayalam movie 'J.S.K-Janaki vs. State of Kerala' has hit a hurdle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) denying it screening permission reportedly over the name of the title character, industry sources said. The Pravin Narayanan-directed movie, with Union Minister Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran in lead roles, reportedly revolves around the legal battle of an assaulted woman named Janaki against the state. According to sources, the film was reportedly denied screening clearance, citing that 'Janaki', an alternative name of Goddess Sita, cannot be used for such a character. Narayanan, in a Facebook post, confirmed on Saturday that the Censor Board has denied screening permission for the movie. There would be no release on June 27, he said in the FB post without elaborating. Meanwhile, noted director B Unnikrishnan, the general secretary of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), on Sunday told reporters that the makers of the JSK were clearly informed by the CBFC that the name 'Janaki' cannot be used in the movie. 'They have not received any written information in this regard. A show-cause notice is yet to be received. They expect to get it by Monday," he told reporters in Kochi. The CBFC clearly stated to the film's crew that the name 'Sita' cannot be used either in the title or for the character in the movie, Unnikrishnan said. 'The story is about the legal fight carried out by an assaulted woman against the state. It is said (by the Board) that Goddess Sita's name cannot be given to the woman character who suffered assault," he said. He said another Malayalam filmmaker also recently faced a similar issue over the name of a character called 'Janaki' in his movie, and he was forced to change it to 'Jayanthi" to get Censor Board certification. Terming the Board's action as 'strange", the FEFKA secretary asked where the country is heading. He said the filmmakers are even denied the freedom to give names of their choice to the characters in their films. The director also said that in this circumstance, it would be tough to choose a name for characters belonging to the Hindu religion, as the majority of them would be epithets of Gods or Goddesses.
