Top 10 injury news of the Lions 2024 season - #10 Alex Anzalone's forearm fracture

Yahoo12-06-2025

Defensive injuries are going to take up a lot of this Detroit Lions top 10 injury news list, so let's get things started with Alex Anzalone who fractured his left forearm in week 11.
Anzalone has been an extremely valuable player and captain since joining the team four years ago. One of his most memorable plays in a Lions uniform was when he sniffed out a 4th down play to help end the Packers playoff hopes in 2022.
Losing him late last season was a big concern as the Lions had already lost a number of key defenders.

He ended up having plate and screws to fix the fracture, which left a lengthy scar.

Impact of injury
Despite the loss of this key cog in the middle of the defense, the Lions only lost one of the six games Anzalone missed. Credit to the team for sustaining their winning ways after already losing defensive starters Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, and Derrick Barnes earlier.

Anzalone recovered in time to return for the final regular season game vs the Vikings and the playoff game vs the Commanders.
Interesting tidbits
∎Anzalone played in a game just five days into his 21-day practice window. Typically and ideally, the practice window is timed to try to take advantage of as much of it as possible. The nature of his injury being an arm (not a leg) as well as the importance of the game (Lions vs Vikings - #1 seed to the winner) likely played a role in his early return in the window.
∎Some might say experience is the best teacher. Some might say pain is. Anzalone has both as he broke the same left forearm in college.
Friendly fire injury
Friendly fire injuries were a concern throughout the season and Anzalone's injury fell into that category. Here's the link to my article summarizing the 2024 friendly fire injuries. While Brian Branch was the one who laid the critical hit, I wouldn't place any blame on him as Anzalone was reaching simultaneously and was not close to having the runner wrapped up.
Outlook
Going forward, there are no significant concerns with Anzalone's forearm. He looked great when he returned, and his strong play should continue into next season.
Off-the-field considerations
The main concern as the season approaches may be off-the-field. He skipped the voluntary OTA for unstated reasons, but there are whispers it could be due to the desire for an extension.

The 2025 season will be his final one under his current contract. Anzalone starts the 2025 season at age 30 and turns 31 on September 22. Age is beginning to become a concern, but with no signs of athletic decline, it's possible the Lions will feel comfortable extending him this offseason. The forearm fracture should not have any impact on this decision.
While the health issues are negligible, salary cap considerations are not. At the LB position, Derrick Barnes just received a 3-year deal worth up to $25.5 million with $16 million guaranteed, and the productive, 24-year-old Jack Campbell may be a priority extension next offseason. The Lions also have many younger players who are worthy of big-money extensions such as Aidan Hutchinson, Brian Branch, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta. As training camp nears, it will be interesting to see how Anzalone's status plays out.

Sam Darnold makes eye-opening admission about how things ended with Vikings

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold reflected on his ending with the Minnesota Vikings. Speaking in a recent interview with The Athletic, Darnold admitted the offseason exit was 'tough to swallow,' acknowledging expectations and his own shortcomings down the stretch. Despite an impressive, overachieving regular season, the Vikings greatly underwhelmed in the playoffs, losing 27-9 to the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card round. 'For lack of a better term, we laid an egg as an offense,' Darnold said. 'And I think, for me personally, that sucks. I felt like we were a really good team, but at the end of the day — and this is gonna sound a little pessimistic — but when you get to the end of it and you don't win the whole thing, you failed. 'I feel like I could have played way better, to be completely honest with you. I feel I didn't play up to my standard. I truly feel that way. I feel like if I would have just played better, I would've been able to give the team a chance.' Sam Darnold was a Pro Bowler last year. Getty Images Darnold, who signed a one-year, $10 million 'prove-it' deal in March 2024 with Minnesota, became the starter for a team expected to be one of the worst in the NFC and likely to turn to rookie first-rounder JJ McCarthy, who missed the season with an injury, at some point. Darnold put together career-highs with 4,319 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, a 102.5 passer rating and his first Pro Bowl selection. The Vikings surged to an impressive 14–3 record, with Darnold proving to be a steadying presence during the regular season, but lost 31-9 to the Lions in the final week to miss out on the division title. Sam Darnold led the Vikings to a 14-3 regular season. Getty Images The breakout led to a three-year deal with Seattle worth north of $100 million. 'I think without a doubt, he's got his best football ahead of him,' former Rams receiver and current Seahawk teammate Cooper Kupp told The Athletic. 'I love his competitiveness. He's not OK with things being just OK.' Darnold added, 'I learned a lot last season, from those two games especially. At the end of the day, you go through those experiences, you learn, and you get better. I try every single day to get better. That's it.'

NFL Draft Summer Scouting Report: Denzel Boston, WR, Washington

Summer is here, and it is everyone's favorite time of the year, scouting time. Every year, we do Summer Scouting to preview college football for Vikings fans, but also give them an idea of names to follow and watch in the fall as needs pop up for Minnesota. Are we going to write about quarterbacks? You know it, but why? Because other NFL teams will draft them, just as they will draft every other position. It all matters whether these players end up on the Vikings, the Bears, or the Steelers. We write these so Vikings fans can be the most informed fans. So if you are still with us, enjoy our latest Summer Scouting report as we prepare you for the Fall. Player Information Player: Denzel Boston School: Washington Height/Weight: 6-4/209 lbs. Player Background - 3-Star Recruit - Started on Varisty as a Freshman in High School - Honorable Mention All-Big Ten in 2024 Career Stats Heading into the 2025 Season - 70 Receptions - 900 Receiving Yards - 12.9 Yards Per Reception - Nine Touchdowns Notable PFF Numbers Heading into the 2025 Season - 65.7 PFF Receiving Grade - 5 Yards Per Reception After Contact - 1.73 Yards Per Route Run - Average Depth of Target of 11.1 Yards - 12 Contested Catches Player Traits - Strong Hands to make catches through contact - Not afraid of contact over the middle - Body control to attack the ball in the air - YAC Ability with vision and awareness - Size to play outside and find success Player Summary Denzel Boston has waited his time for the immense talent of the Washington wide receiver room ahead of him to go to the NFL so he can be their WR1. He is poised to be that and more in 2025 as the Huskies look to have a dynamic offense with him becoming the potential face of it. Boston worked a lot across the middle in 2024 and found success that way. He never shied away from contact, either making the catch or after, but he also worked well outside stretching the field. Boston is one of those unique players who can be used anywhere as a receiver so his best days may be ahead of him in the NFL when he can focus on one role. For now, though, just enjoy his playmaking this fall as he potentially enters the draft in April.

He ultimately committed to Texas and is now poised to bring his complete skillset to the Longhorns and the SEC. Endries shined as a blocker and showed he has the strength and awareness to keep doing that as he goes from the ACC to the SEC. Where he will take his biggest leap as a prospect is as a receiver, where he has already showcased his ability to have contact balance, maintain momentum through it, and also have a burst after the catch to pick up extra yards. Look for him to be in contention for the top tight end spot when the NFL Draft rolls around next April.
