Pretorius, Senokwane and Yusuf in Proteas squad for Zimbabwe Test series
Five uncapped players, including 19-year-old breakout star Lhuan-dre Pretorius, were included in the 16-man Proteas squad for the two Tests against Zimbabwe later this month.
Lesego Senokwane, who will join the Titans next season, the Lions' Codi Yusuf, Prenelan Subrayen and Dewald Brevis are the other new faces for a short series that is not part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.
The two Tests will be played in Bulawayo, with the first match starting on June 28.
Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs are all being rested from the series, with head coach Shukri Conrad giving opportunities to players who all had excellent domestic seasons last summer.
'We've opted to rest some players to manage their workload ahead of a busy season,' said Conrad.

Proteas Men's Test captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe due to a left hamstring strain. Tony de Zorzi, who did not play in the New Year's Test match against Pakistan earlier this year and the Test Championship final at Lord's last week, will have a crucial opportunity to play against Zimbabwe and challenge for the opening spot when the full-strength team returns to action later this year. The two Test matches do not fall within the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship cycle but will play a key role in giving the fringe players an important exposure to Test cricket and thus widen the talent pool for the Test team. The squad will depart for Bulawayo on Tuesday, 24 June, from OR Tambo International Airport. The latest addition is former Bulls general Chris Smith, who returns from a two-season stint overseas at French club Oyonnax, crossing the Jukskei from the Pretoria side where he last played before leaving the country. Smith, a consistent kicker, had some strong performances in the blue jersey. So, the Johannesburg side will hope he can take his game to another level as they look for a flyhalf who can spearhead the team to the quarter-finals in the coming season. They have struggled for consistency in the No 10 jersey for the last couple of campaigns, with Kade Wolhuter, Gianni Lombard and Nico Steyn sharing the jersey. But none have put their hand up to claim the position, and the arrival of Smith will add to that competition. He is not the only player joining the men from Ellis Park; they also signed two wingers in Angelo Davids of the Stormers and Eduan Keyter from the Sharks. They must fill the void of Springbok Edwill van der Merwe, who has joined the Sharks. Van der Merwe, who became a Bok at the Lions, has been outstanding, and the duo will have big boots to fill. Davids, a former Blitzbok, will seek more game-time after falling out of favour in Cape Town, while Keyter will look to revive his career after a spell of unfortunate injuries while based at Kings Park. They boast some of the most exciting players in the country, but have unfortunately not lived up to expectations over the last couple of seasons. Head coach Ivan van Rooyen will hope the strategic acquisitions can boost the side on and off the field as they use the Currie Cup to prepare for their fifth season in the European competition. Van Rooyen is under pressure, and it will likely be a non-negotiable for the side to reach the playoffs if he wants to take them forward. The Stormers, meanwhile, won their arbitration case with loose forward Ben-Jason Dixon, which will see the Springbok committed to the Cape side until 2027 at least. They also confirmed the extension of midfielder Wandisile Simelane's stay in the Cape. Dixon sought arbitration to resolve a particular clause in his contract, which runs until July 2027. 'Ben-Jason is one of the most committed rugby players around, and has been a vital cog in our team for some time. With this now settled, we know that he will continue to give everything on and off the field for us,' Stormers director of rugby John Dobson said in a statement on Friday. Proteas confidence validated after World Test Championship final win, says Marco Jansen

South Africa have tours to Pakistan and India later this year, two countries where they have not won a Test series in a long time. In fact, apart from their series victory in Bangladesh last year, their first on the sub-continent in a decade, the Proteas have struggled in that region. To make matters worse, having won the World Test Championship, there will be more pressure on the team now as all eyes will be on them to witness how they begin their defence of the trophy in the upcoming 2025-2027 WTC cycle. However, Jansen emphasised that they have added confidence following their heroics at Lord's last week. It is warranted confidence, as they beat Australia to become the world Test champions, a team that are almost unbeatable in the finals of ICC events. 'Winning against them in the final with that bowling line-up, with that batting line-up definitely gives us a lot of confidence going forward,' Jansen said this week. 'We already had confidence, but it's sort of like just confirmation that, okay, cool, we actually can go and we can put the performances in when it's needed. So, yeah, definitely a good feeling.' Jansen missed out on the tour to Bangladesh as he was placed on a strength and conditioning block, and will thus have his first taste of Test cricket on the Asian sub-continent later this year. It is a good thing that the youngster is still looking to grow as a cricketer, as the sub-continent will most certainly serve him a few lessons. 'Personally, I feel I can grow a lot more. For me, it's just all about trying to get better and trying to get ways or find ways to help the team win. I like to say to make the team win. I don't just want to help, I want to make us win, because for me, it's two different things," said Jansen. 'But just also the other guys as well, KG (Rabada) also has been growing that's why he's kept on putting in match-winning performances, the batters, the guys off the field, the management, all of us. 'Everyone has grown in whatever facet. To see that happening over a two-year period is pretty cool to see. 'I think for all of us, you can work as hard as you can for as long as you can, but unfortunately, we're in the business of winning. 'If you don't win, it doesn't really matter what you do or how hard you work. 'For us, it's all about winning, because then that's when all the hard work pays off.' Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs will miss the upcoming two-match series against Zimbabwe as they are rested. Captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out due to a hamstring strain, while Lungi Ngidi will only be available for the second Test in Bulawayo.
