Levi Colwill ‘excited' by Delap arrival after positive Chelsea debut

Levi Colwill says he knew Liam Delap would make it as a professional footballer after he grabbed an assist on his Chelsea debut in their 2-0 win over LAFC.
Delap signed for Chelsea at the start of June from Ipswich Town in a £30 million deal after an impressive first season in the Premier League, scoring 12 times.

The 22-year-old was brought on for his Blues debut in the second half of the west Londoners first Club World Cup match against the MLS side and made an instant impact, crossing for Enzo Fernandez in the 79th minute to secure a winning start to Group D for Enzo Maresca's side.
Speaking after the match, Colwill applauded the impact made by his new teammate, and admitted he was always confident the forward would become a success.
'I've known Liam for a long time now, played against him a load of times,' Delap said. 'Growing up you sort of know the players that are going to make it, and he was one of those players.
'To have him for our team, to train against him, to see him score goals which I know he will, I'm very excited.

'He's a confident player, he's an amazing player, we know he's going to score goals for Chelsea in that no.9 shirt.
'That's the mentality when you're a Chelsea player. He came on and did half his job and got an assist but we need him to score goals and he knows he's got to score goals if he wats to play in our team. That's the mentality we need from every player.'
Colwill also acknowledged the quality of goalscorer Fernandez, with the Argentine having come under constant scrutiny since his £105 million move from Benfica in January 2023.
'We all know Enzo is fantastic player. He's a player you can rely on in the big games to find the goal and to make things happen. He's done it today and in the Conference League final. As a team we believe in him, we all know how good he is and he's definitely under appreciated.'

'Glad MMA can move on': Tom Aspinall, fellow fighters react to Jon Jones retiring, finally dropping UFC title

Tom Aspinall is finally the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion. (Chris Unger via Getty Images) The seemingly endless saga of Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall is finally over. UFC CEO Dana White announced Saturday that Jones has elected to retire rather than fight Aspinall in blockbuster bout to unify the UFC heavyweight titles. As a result, Jones vacates his UFC heavyweight belt and Aspinall, the interim champion for the past 19 months, has been promoted to undisputed champion status. Advertisement The news marks a bittersweet end to Jones' bizarre heavyweight reign, which began in March 2023 with a first-round submission of Ciryl Gane and ultimately contained only one title defense — a November 2024 showdown against Stipe Miocic, who was 42 years old at the time and hadn't won a fight since 2020. After spending the majority of the past two years trying to convince Jones to face him, Aspinall now takes up the mantle as UFC heavyweight king having already almost cleared out the rest of the division's top ranks. The Englishman is 8-1 under the UFC banner, with his lone loss coming in a setback to Curtis Blaydes that saw Aspinall tear his ACL just 15 seconds into the match; Aspinall swiftly avenged that outcome upon his return with a 60-second destruction of Blaydes this past July to defend his interim belt. Advertisement In his first statement Saturday as undisputed champion, Aspinall posted a clip of White's announcement and promised fans that they'd finally get "an active undisputed champion." For you fans. It's time to get this Heavyweight division going. An active Undisputed Champion Considering how long the MMA world waited for resolution to the Jones-Aspinall situation, and Jones' standing as one of the most decorated — yet controversial — figures in the sport's history, it's not a surprise that his long-awaited decision prompted a flood of reactions from his fellow competitors. A sampling of those reactions can be read below.

Man City squad must be trimmed: Guardiola

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola says he must trim his squad down to size after the Club World Cup. (David Ramos) Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said Saturday his club will have to sell players this summer for the stars' own good. The Premier League side brought in several players ahead of the Club World Cup, leaving Guardiola with a large squad. Advertisement Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been linked with a move to Turkish side Galatasaray in recent days. Guardiola said he did not know anything about it, but said several players would have to be sold following the purchases of Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri. "I will love to have the players we have right now all season," Guardiola told reporters in Atlanta. "The problem is they will be unhappy during the season, they will be sad, they will be disappointed. "I don't want that. I do it for them, not for me. For them. We have to see what happens, it's a long time until the transfer window will be closed, we have to see step by step." Advertisement Guardiola has said in the past he prefers a squad size of around 20 senior players, whereas City have more than 30 at present. Before trimming the squad City are hoping to win the Club World Cup in the United States with their new arrivals providing fresh energy. They beat Wydad AC in their first match and face Al Ain on Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium where they can seal qualification to the last 16. Guardiola said Spanish defensive midfielder Rodri was not able to start the game as he continues his comeback from injury. "He's getting better. He can play 20 minutes, 30 minutes at a time. He wants to play to help but we want to protect his knee," said the coach. Advertisement - 'Privilege' - Guardiola said he was keen to take City far in the Club World Cup and it was a "privilege to be here". The coach dismissed some of the complaints about the competition and pointed towards the attitude of the South American clubs as an example of follow. "I love when I see Botafogo, all the Brazilian teams, Argentinian teams, how they celebrate, how they are together, I love them," said Guardiola. "I'm pretty sure for the South American teams, for the Brazilian teams, for Argentinean teams, this competition is maybe the maximum... "I like how all the games are tight, except one or two, and people are surprised, European teams lose. Welcome to the real world. Welcome to the real world my friends." Advertisement Guardiola said Brazilian sides would have a "carnival for one week" if they won the tournament. After Manchester City failed to win a trophy apart from the Community Shield, it would provide a boost heading into the new season. Guardiola said his team and staff, both featuring new arrivals, were enjoying spending time with each other and their facilities in Florida. "It's a privilege to be here... to be back in four years time you have to win big, big, prizes," said Guardiola. "Once we are here why should not we fight to stay longer and longer and longer... "We can say it's annoying to come here (but) I want to arrive to the last stages, and that's the truth." rbs/sev

Ottawa Redblacks weather conditions, down Calgary Stampeders for first win of CFL season

Redblacks 20, Stampeders 12 The Ottawa Redblacks did what they had to for their first win of the Canadian Football League season Saturday. On a windy, rainy and cold afternoon at McMahon Stadium, the Redblacks used a strong running game, a stout defence and the kicking boot of Lewis Ward to hand the Calgary Stampeders their first loss of the season. In the 20-12 victory that improved the Redblacks record to 1-2 and moved them from last in the East Division into second place, Dustin Crum surely improved his standing from third-string quarterback to the primary backup behind the injured Dru Brown by not turning the ball over and picking up the W. Crum, who completed just nine of 22 passes because the conditions gave normally sure-handed receivers slippery fingers, ran 11 times for 64 yards. And, while William Stanback had his best game as a Redblack with nine carries for 82 yards, stealing the spotlight was his platoon partner in the backfield. Canadian running back Daniel Adeboboye scored the game's only touchdown with 5:02 left, when he pulled in a nine-yard pass from Crum. Right before that, Adeboboye made the biggest offensive play of the day when he took a handoff and burst up the middle for a 52-yard gain. Adeboboye finished the game with 10 carries for 96 yards. The Redblacks' defence was credited with five turnovers, including a late fourth-quarter interception by safety Charlie Ringland, and stopped the Vernon Adams Jr.-directed Calgary offence for the third time on a third-down play to seal the outcome. Ward was 4-for-5 on field goal attempts with scoring boots of 34, 22, 26 and 33 yards before a late 48-yard attempt hit the left upright and stayed out. The Redblacks also cleaned up a trouble spot by taking just four penalties for 26 yards. They held a 6-2 first-half lead that could have been mistaken for the score of a Senators-Flames National Hockey League game. On Ottawa's first possession, Crum ran three times for 30 yards during a 10-play, 52-yard drive that ended with a Ward field goal from the 34. When Calgary's Rene Paredes was wide with a 43-yard field-goal attempt later in the first quarter, Devonte Dedmon returned the ball to Ottawa's 12-yard line, but the Redblacks' Robert Priester was called for an illegal block, and the ball was brought back to the one. Two plays later, Crum was sacked in the end zone by Jaylon Hutchings. It was the third time in two games that a Priester penalty preceded points by the opposition. In last week's loss to Montreal, he was flagged for horse-collar tackles before an Alouettes touchdown and a field goal. Ottawa took a 3-2 lead over Calgary late into the first half because of three turnovers forced by the defence. Along with a fumble recovery by defensive back Amari Henderson, the Redblacks 'stopped' Calgary when Clark Barnes dropped an Adams end-zone pass and again when defensive back Adrian Frye snuffed out an attempt by short-yardage QB P.J. Walker. It was another big play in a road game for Frye, who had two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the season opener. From that goal-line stand, the Redblacks ran a 12-play drive powered by Stanback to set up Ward's 22-yard field goal. Stanback, who entered the game with 16 carries for 55 yards on the season, ran the ball seven times for 76 yards on that series alone. Ward's second field goal was made possible because Eugene Lewis, who last week had his consecutive games with a touchdown catch streak ended one short of the CFL record, dropped a Crum end-zone pass that hit him in the numbers.
