Lives of Donna and Joe McCaul now, 20 years after famous Eurovision appearance
It's been two decades since Donna and Joe McCaul flew the flag for Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest.
The brother and sister duo appeared at the 2005 contest in Kyiv in Ukraine after victory on the TV show You're a Star, performing their song, titled Love?
Unfortunately, as has been the case for many of Ireland's recent Eurovision participants, Donna and Joe didn't make it through to the grand final and have since embarked on individual career paths, reports RSVP Live.
In 2013, Donna relocated to Los Angeles, where she has lived ever since.
She continues to sing and is a member of a group called Identity Theft The Band.
Last year, she expressed her desire to grace the Eurovision stage once more, this time with her band.
"I want to do it with the experience I got throughout the years, from doing music, different shows and learning about myself vocally and musically," she revealed to RSVP Live.
"This time around, it would be writing my own song with my band. It's our own genre that we would want to bring to the stage."
In 2017, Donna disclosed that she needed to undergo preventative cancer surgery in the US and set up a GoFundMe to help cover the costs, explaining that she required removal of cysts from her breasts and ovaries.
In her fundraising appeal, she stated: "My doctors in the US said I need to get these operations done now rather than later. The breast surgery costs $21,000 and operation on my ovaries is another $21,000. I have to pay for scans as well, and that's how I came up with a $50,000 figure.
"If people want to donate and help, I would be so grateful. It's 100 per cent for medical reasons. I would never make this appeal if I wasn't in a situation where I had do it."
Joe McCaul has mostly retreated from the spotlight since his Eurovision appearance but remains dedicated to music through teaching.
The vocalist made a name for himself with a stint on The X Factor in 2015, progressing as far as bootcamp and the Six Chair Challenge before he was eliminated.
Joe has also had to deal with some health issues and opened up about his multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2014.
"My world crumbled around me," he told the Irish Independent. "I was crying and the doctors just left me be."
"When I got the news nothing made any sense. I couldn't see a life for myself. When I think MS I only see a wheelchair. I'm still coming to terms with it," he said at the time.
"I can either lie down under it or get up and go. When people say to me, but you've got MS, I say, MS hasn't got me. I love to party and I'm living for now. I'm not thinking about what next year has to offer."
Last year, Donna told RSVP Live that once was enough for Joe as far as the Eurovision is concerned but that her brother is a constant source of support.
"Joe has stepped back from that. He's teaching music in a college in Dublin," she said.
"I don't think he has any interest in going back. I think the first time was enough for him.
"He's very supportive. He always says, 'Go for it. It's your dream'."

Former boxer opens exhibit of paintings in Wicklow
Wicklow People Today at 03:00 Artist Joe Farrell, who started painting back in 1978 after giving up amateur boxing, has launched his latest exhibition at the Courthouse Art Centre, Tinahely, which remains open to the public until Saturday, July 5. His These Memories Can't Wait exhibition opened in the Courthouse Arts Centre on Sunday, June 15. Speaking about the inspiration behind the works, he said: 'I have always been interested in the potential for paint and lens to observe, describe and understand the world in different ways. My paintings address the fragile, fugitive qualities of memory by recapturing and distilling my experiences in more than twenty countries over almost five decades. 'The paintings rely solely on memories of people, places and events. The images are built up from multiple layers or frames of memory. As each frame is attenuated by time and distance, the paintings become enigmatic and abstract. Shifting timescales, viewpoints and perspectives coalesce until a precise image emerges from colour, gesture, surface and line.' A painter, photographer and documentary director, Joe's works feature in the Irish State art collection, as well as in private and institutional collections in Ireland, Canada and UK. He has also directed broadcast documentaries and factual programmes in more than 20 countries including Ethiopia, DR Congo, Kenya, South Africa, Korea and Jamaica.

Former Eurovision star considered taking his own life after song contest
Former Eurovision star Joe McCaul has revealed he considered taking his own life after the song contest. Joe was part of brother and sister duo, Donna and Joe McCaul, who represented Ireland at the Eurovision in 2005 in Ukraine with their song Love while Joe was still just 17. After failing to qualify, Joe revealed he faced months of ridicule and only got a holiday to Crete out of it. Speaking to Brenda Dennehy on The Comeback podcast, he said: 'I remember when we didn't get in, the devastating effect that had on me. "I went back to my room, I was only 17, and I struggled very hard because that was more shame, more embarrassment, more rejection. Everyone was going out, and they (Donna and the crew) went to the finals on Saturday night, I didn't go, I just stayed in my hotel room.' He said when he returned to Ireland, he was ridiculed regularly. The Irish Mirror's Crime Writers Michael O'Toole and Paul Healy are writing a new weekly newsletter called Crime Ireland. Click here to sign up and get it delivered to your inbox every week 'I think over the years, I was nearly taken advantage of. I was made an eejit out of by people, people in the media. That was hard because I was saying, 'Where is my self-worth, why can't I be assertive?' 'I found it very hard to be assertive because I didn't like conflict, and then because I didn't like conflict, if I reacted a certain way, some people would say 'Oh that was very aggressive'. So I couldn't even stand up for myself.' Joe said he thought they'd be 'millionaires' but all he got after Eurovision was 'a holiday in Crete'. 'I thought we were going to be millionaires. I thought I was going to be able to buy my mother out of the council estate. I got a holiday to Crete, that's what I got.' Joe is the youngest of six siblings and his mother raised them on her own. 'My dad, unfortunately, passed away a couple of years ago, but I had no kind of relationship with him. Alcoholism, unfortunately, took over his life and then he moved to London.' Joe said when a media outlet discovered his father's issue with drink it caused massive stress on the family. 'Once or twice I thought of taking my own life.' He said he had suffered recurrent intrusive thoughts about suicide from an early age. 'The intensity of it then would probably get a little more if I was under any increased stress or anything significant was happening in my life or something bad was happening… I was always terrified of the thought… I would always be going, 'f**k, I need to see a psychiatrist'.' After a stint on X Factor in 2015, where Simon Cowell called him an 'awful performer', Joe suffered at the hands of social media trolls again. 'And then there was the shame, the embarrassment, the rejection, and I just wanted it to be over there. 'The s**t that was put online, I remember my friends used to be sending them to me and the horrible stuff that people were saying. I used to have to say 'please do not send me this, I don't want to be looking at it'.' Joe revealed in 2014 that he had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the end of 2013. 'I literally just lost the plot then. I think I went on a self-destruct button that was hit. I went off the rails for months.' He said he was on medication that didn't suit him at the time but has since changed medication and is currently symptom free and in remission. 'Fitness, running, doing kind of high-intensity interval based kind of training has been my saviour. Not just for my physical health because that's quite good but for my mental health, which is an ongoing struggle that some days I'm really, really shit. 'But I have really good coping tools and I have a really solid support group around me,' he added.
