Kanpur: Three people, including a 10-year-old girl, lost their lives by drowning in the Ganga in the Bilhaur police station area of Kanpur on Thursday. The police, assisted by divers, retrieved the bodies after receiving information.
The deceased were identified as Balram Nishad (22), son of Chanda Nishad from Shivli police station, Kanpur Dehat, his brother-in-law Sandeep Nishad (20), son of Ramvilas from Bidhnu police station, Kanpur Nagar, and his niece Priyanka (10), daughter of Sarvesh Nishad from Kallupurwa Sen Paschim Para, Kanpur Nagar.
According to reports, Balram was visiting his sister's residence in Kallu Ka Purwa Sen Paschim Para, Bilhaur, on Wednesday with his wife and brother-in-law Sandeep.
They were there to attend Priyanka's 'mundan' ceremony. On Thursday, while Balram's brother-in-law Sarvesh was at the market purchasing medicine for his wife, the family members went to take a bath in the Ganga during Jyestha Dussehra.
The situation turned fatal when Priyanka went into deep waters and started drowning. Balram attempted to rescue her but found himself in difficulty. Sandeep, upon seeing both in distress, jumped in to help but also drowned.
Nearby bathers attempted to rescue them and alerted the police. The three were pulled out and rushed to the nearby CHC, but doctors pronounced them dead.
ACP Bilhaur, Amarnath Yadav confirmed the drowning deaths at Kallu Purwa Akbarpur Sendh Ghat. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and legal procedures are in progress. The police said that Balram had got married in Feb. The incident has raised concerns about safety measures at the ghats, particularly during religious festivals when large crowds gather for ritual bathing.
Local authorities have announced plans to increase safety arrangements, including the deployment of additional lifeguards and installation of warning signs about deep water zones. The police have initiated a detailed investigation into the incident. They are recording statements from witnesses and family members present at the scene. The local administration has said it will provide all possible assistance to the bereaved families.

Odisha Crime Branch begins probe into Gopalpur gangrape; Priyanka Gandhi slams state govt

BHUBANESWAR /BERHAMPUR: The Crime Against Women and Children's Wing (CAW&CW) of Odisha Crime Branch began probe into the gangrape of the 20-year-old student on Gopalpur beach even as Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday lit into the state government accusing it of failing to prioritise women's safety. In a strongly worded post on X on Wednesday, Priyanka said the incident highlighted the growing violence against women in Odisha. 'The brutal assault on a girl student by ten individuals in Gopalpur, Odisha, is a heinous crime that warrants strong condemnation. Harshest words are not enough to condemn the brutality meted out to the girl. The incident highlights the growing violence against women in Odisha,' said the post. While the horrific crime grabbed national attention, the CAW&CW team, led by IG S Shyni, visited the crime scene and examined a radius of 300 metre. It also met the survivor who is now being provided psychosocial support. Sources said, the Crime Branch is looking to fast-track the investigation and submit the chargesheet at the earliest. During probe, it was found that the stretch of the beach where the crime took place on Sunday has seating areas for tourists but does not have illumination. The CAW&CW team also enquired how the rape survivor and her friend reached the beach. It has come to light that around 8 pm on Sunday, Gopalpur police with all-terrain vehicle was patrolling and even passed the crime spot. Seeing the vehicle, the accused apparently gagged the victim and her male friend and waited till the patrol went away. The rape survivor apparently mentioned this in her statement. Though the team refused to divulge any detail about the ongoing probe, sources said, it examined the mobile phone to which the male friend of the rape survivor paid Rs 1,000 using PhonePe. The accused had apparently extorted money from the duo and it was the phone number which helped the police to trace the accused within hours of the incident.

NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old man held a symbolic wedding ceremony with his deceased fiancée before her funeral in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district on Monday. The deceased, Priyanka Madhesia (23), had allegedly taken her own life at her residence the previous night. Prior to her death, Priyanka, who was found hanging, had a disagreement with her fiancé, Sunny Madhesia. The family has not filed any police report regarding the incident. UP Man Performs Symbolic Wedding With Dead Dead Before Her Cremation

Maharajganj: In an unusual gesture, a 29-year-old man on Monday performed a symbolic wedding with his deceased fiance just hours before her funeral in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district. The woman, identified as Priyanka Madhesia (23), allegedly committed suicide at her residence last night. Priyanka, who allegedly hanged herself to death, had an argument with this man named Sunny Madhesia. The woman's family has, however, not lodged any police complaint yet. As the mourning family members and villagers gathered earlier in the day in Krishna Nagar locality of Nichlaul to prepare for the woman's last rites, the atmosphere turned surreal when Sunny stepped forward with vermilion (sindoor) in his hand. Amid chanting of mantras led by a local priest, he solemnly applied sindoor on the deceased woman's forehead and walked seven ritualistic circles around her bier in front of stunned onlookers, including women, who captured the episode on their mobile phones. "This was my way of fulfilling her last wish...I loved her very much," said Sunny after performing the symbolic wedding. "We were going to get married in November. Even though she is no more, I wanted to make her my wife the way we had both dreamt," he added. The symbolic marriage was performed with full Hindu rituals, including an offering of 'aarti'. Sunny later lit the funeral pyre, a role typically reserved for the spouse or a close male relative of the deceased. The local police confirmed the rare sequence of events. Nichlaul Police Station SHO Akhilesh Kumar Verma said the symbolic marriage was carried out with the consent of both families. "It was a mutual decision. Sunny also expressed his wish to organize her 13th-day death ritual (terahvin), which traditionally concludes the mourning period," Verma told PTI. Sunny and Priyanka had been in a relationship for over three years. Sunny, who had first met Priyanka when he moved in as a tenant in her home, later opened a mobile repair and accessories shop in the area and continued to live nearby. The relationship was accepted by both families and the couple was formally engaged. The wedding was scheduled for November 29, 2025. The Station House Officer (SHO) said that a minor argument, however, broke out between the couple on Sunday evening. Priyanka, who was found hanging in her room later that night, was rushed to the Community Health Centre in Nichlaul, where doctors declared her dead on arrival, he added. No formal complaint has been lodged by the family regarding Priyanka's death, police said.
