Is Archana Puran Singh paid to laugh at Kapil Sharma Show? Actress shares a 'funny' truth

Time of India18-05-2025

In recent months, veteran actress
Archana Puran Singh
has stepped into the world of
digital content creation
, gradually carving out her space among online audiences. Despite this new direction, her deep-rooted connection with comedian
Kapil Sharma
continues to be a defining aspect of her public persona. Having worked together for several years, Archana and Kapil have cultivated a genuine camaraderie, which often comes to life in Kapil's playful on-stage jibes. One particular recurring punchline that has amused viewers is Kapil's running gag that Archana is 'paid to laugh.'
During a candid chat with SCREEN, Archana addressed the joke, revealing that the line has become so widespread that even her sons have joined in the fun. In one of her video blogs, they jokingly echoed Kapil's quip, teasing their mother affectionately.
Reacting to the banter, Archana explained, 'It's all in good humor now. Kapil jokes about everything, and while audiences sometimes take it to heart, I don't. Comedy thrives on punchlines and reactions—you deliver the line, earn the laugh, and keep it moving.'
She elaborated further, 'When I first started with
Comedy Circus
, I was officially there as a judge. But now, in Kapil's show, I'm not even sure what my exact designation is. I'm more like a recurring celebrity guest. Kapil keeps the jokes coming, and the running theme is that I'm paid just to enjoy myself. I laugh loudly and naturally, which gives the impression that laughter is my job. That narrative has caught on with my family too—my kids now lovingly mimic the same line. But if you watch my vlogs, you'll see me laughing freely, even when no paycheck is involved. I find it all very amusing, and I'm happy to play along.'
Reflecting on their longstanding bond, Archana also recalled how their friendship began. 'Kapil was just one of many contestants on Comedy Circus. Our connection was formed on mutual admiration. As a senior and a judge, I witnessed his brilliance firsthand. Over time, our relationship deepened. What started as professional respect has become something akin to family. Kapil is naturally private, but with me, he opens up. Whether at my place or his, we're both at ease. We share a similar taste in humor, which makes our friendship even more special.'
Professionally, Archana will next be seen in Toaster, the debut production of actor Rajkummar Rao, slated for release on Netflix. She's also confirmed to return in the upcoming third season of
The Great Indian Kapil Show
.
Previously, she appeared in the romantic comedy Naadaniyan, which also introduced Ibrahim Ali Khan to the screen. Despite its high-profile cast, the film, released on Netflix in March, received poor critical reception. She reprised her iconic role from 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' - Miss Braganza.

The Great Indian Kapil Show: Salman Khan warns Parmeet Sethi against wife Archana Puran Singh, calls him ‘nibhaane ka devta'

The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 3 premiered on Netflix India this Saturday. Actor-comedian Kapil Sharma kickstarted his celebrated show with superstar Salman Khan being the first celebrity guest. But what has also been a new addition to the season is Navjot Singh Sidhu. The politician who had quit Kapil's show a few years back due to backlash over a political comment is now back with Kapil Sharma, along with Archana Puran Singh. The show's first episode saw Kapil taking digs at Navjot and Archana sharing screen space. Also Read: Kapil Sharma calls Archana Puran Singh's vlogs 'an excuse for her family to feast for free'; says he could afford Sidhu only after Netflix increased budget A post shared by Netflix India (@netflix_in) When Archana asked Salman if he is tired of questions about his marriage, the actor repled, 'Main humesha kehta hu ki mere shaadi kar lene mein aapka kya faeda hai? Kya aapko maza aa raha hai ki main aapke liye suhagrat mana raha hu? Mai kya kar raha hu jisme aapko itni khushi horahi hai ki main barbad hojau (I always ask people, how does it benefit you if I get married? Are you enjoying the fact that I'm spending my wedding night? What am I doing that brings you so much joy in seeing me ruined)?' He said that people are divorcing over reasons such as snoring and said that at this stage of his life, he cannot start all over again. 'Phir divorce toh chalo hogya, woh aadhe paise bhi toh le jaati hai,' he added. Later, Salman Khan was also seen making fun comments on Archana and Parmeet Sethi's marriage. The Sikandar actor was seen discussing how many relationships don't last today. He also joked that when a partner starts losing weight, they are probably seeking someone else. Joking further, he said, 'I am seeing two people here who have gotten very fit, and they seem to be eyeing someone, Bittu (Parmeet), buddy, be careful. Aaj kal koi nibhata nahi hai bhai, Parmeet is mahaan. Nibhaane ka devta hai yeh (Nobody pulls through a relationship today, so Parmeet is a legend. He is the god of staying loyal in a relationship.)' Archana also responded to Salman, saying that she has equally been loyal for the success of their marriage, to which Salman agreed. Kapil was also seen joking about how Sidhu's return on the show made Archana very restless. Kapil said, 'I would like to thank the audience, and to Netflix for giving us a budget that we can afford Sidhu Paaji. You returned to your seat after years, and even though this is a gatbandhan ki sarkar (coalition government), how do you feel?' A post shared by The Great Indian Kapil Show Only On Netflix (@thegreatindiankapilshow) He also told Sidhu, 'Ever since she (Archana) got to know that you are returning on the show, she has been seeing astrologers to deal with you.' Kapil also told Archana, 'Sidhu Paaji has no issues with you. When he was told that he and you would be sitting together, he said that in matches, I do commentary with someone, here also I will do the same.' All of it was in good humor, and both Sidhu and Archana also laughed at it. Kapil also pointed out how just to get Sidhu on board, they took six months to bring the new season.

Squid Game Season 3 OTT release date: Netflix all set to stream the ‘beginning of the end'; what happened in Season 2?

All set for the Squid Game Season 3 OTT release? As Netflix is all set to stream the 'beginning of the end', the final season of the massively-popular South Korean web series comes just six months after Season 2. The previous season was released on December 26, 2024. After the phenomenal success of Squid Game 1, Season 2 received mixed reviews. While people praised strong acting, deep messages and high drama, the story moved slowly and isn't as gripping as Season 1. 'It was so badly done, you can tell they are performing from a script, so many cutaways to contestant interviews pre-games where they all have your typical reality TV sob stories… Just over the top, overly dramatic, extremely predictable and poorly produced rubbish,' wrote one user. 'Right from the start, it is non-stop annoying commentary from the contestants spouting off every cliche that has ever existed. It's like they gathered up all of the dumbest people from Family Feud and dumped them here,' came from another. Many viewers who liked Season 2 claimed that it was not a fictional TV show, but a reality TV show. 'It's just ABSURD how people are so quick to rate this show so low when their basis is that it's not even related to the previous season. NEWSFLASH!!! It's a reality show INSPIRED by the series,' wrote on viewer on IMDb. Netflix earlier revealed the Squid Game Season 3 OTT release date. The OTT giant will start streaming all episodes on the same date, June 27. As per reports, the season will have 6 episodes. In the Squid Game Season 2 finale, Gi-hun tries to lead a revolt against the game makers. The plan nearly succeeds, but the Front Man, secretly Player 001, betrays him. He kills Gi-hun's close friend Jung-bae and ends the rebellion.

Ahead of M3gan 2.0 release date, actress Allison Williams reveals her worry about AI replacing humans

In M3gan 2.0, the sequel to the sci-fi horror M3gan, actress Allison Williams returns as Gemma. She plays a roboticist who now fights against unsafe AI after her earlier creation turns deadly. Ahead of the M3gan 2.0 release date, she spoke to The Guardian. When asked if she fears AI replacing actors, Williams reveals about her 'worrying' nature. 'If you ask me any question that starts with: 'Are you worried?' the answer is always yes, because I have an endless capacity to be worried about things,' she told The Guardian. Anyway, she believes humans may eventually be replaced. She thinks AI still can't fully copy true human creativity, at least not yet. While she is worried about AI replacing artists, it's way down on the list. Williams has a deep interest in AI and even knows OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman. While researching for her character Gemma, she spoke to robotics experts. M3gan also questions children's exposure to tech. Williams, a mother, recalls using ChatGPT to explain rocket launches to her 3-year-old son. His excited reaction made her realise how quickly kids get hooked on tech. She immediately felt uneasy and decided it'd be better to use books next time. After her parents die in a car crash, eight-year-old Cady moves in with her aunt Gemma, who works at a toy company in Seattle. Gemma has been secretly building M3gan, a life-size robot doll powered by AI. It is meant to be a perfect friend for kids. When M3gan is paired with Cady, it works better than expected. But, soon, M3gan becomes too protective, killing anything that seems like a threat to Cady. As Gemma realises the danger, she tries to shut M3gan down. But, it fights back, even killing Gemma's boss and trying to attack Gemma and Cady at home. In the final fight, Cady and Gemma destroy M3gan using another robot. Though M3gan seems gone, a camera in the house switches on mysteriously, hinting she may still be active. M3gan can be watched on OTT platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
