New care centres are making the health of South Australians a priority
It is every mother's worst nightmare when their newborn baby has difficulty breathing.
For 27-year-old mother-of-three Talisha Wagner, it became reality when faced with her five-month-old daughter Paisley struggling to breathe.
Calling the healthdirect helpline, Wagner was advised to immediately head to hospital or the Elizabeth Medical and Dental Centre, where she could access urgent care services for her daughter.
Paisley was then referred to and treated at the Elizabeth Priority Care Centre, a centre her mum was previously unaware of.
Faced with a daunting wait in a hospital emergency department, she chose to try the clinic, where the young family was in and out in 90 minutes armed with a diagnosis and the information necessary to tackle the problem facing the newborn.
'It's happened before and we have taken her to the hospital – twice,' Wagner explains.
Paisley's condition – known as laryngomalacia – is caused by floppiness of the laryngeal tissues above the vocal cords.
When breathing in, the tissues above the vocal cords fall in towards the airway, causing partial obstruction.
The doctor quickly diagnosed the issue, which Paisley will eventually grow out of as she gets bigger and her muscles become stronger.
'They taught me different ways for her to swallow to kind of bring it back,' Wagner says.
'It was really great as they showed me what to do in the event it happens again.
'Now she wears a sock monitor so I can keep a close eye on it.'
SA Health, in partnership with the Adelaide Primary Health Network and general practices, established four Priority Care Centres across metropolitan Adelaide in Marion, Elizabeth, Para Hills West and Hindmarsh, with an additional centre located in Mount Barker.
These centres provide vital community-based healthcare and treatment for eligible patients such as Paisley and her mother with urgent but non-life-threatening conditions who would otherwise be seeking treatment at a hospital emergency department.
The referral-based centres can also provide a range of other services including radiology, pathology and pharmacy services, and can refer on for follow-up care.
Patients who are eligible for Medicare can also access a Priority Care Centre at no cost.
Talisha Wagner is a big advocate for the centres. 'Absolutely, they were amazing,' she says. 'It's not as chaotic as an emergency department and from my experience I think they have more time to be thorough and you're not having to wait around for hours on end to get the help you need.'
New service is a breath of fresh air to consumers
When Carolyn Ohijenko was having difficulty breathing, the 70-year-old feared yet another trip to the emergency department and the potential of a lengthy wait.
Recently diagnosed with asthma, Ohijenko was having problems managing her breathing along with her medications, when ambulance officers were called to her home.
Upon assessment they made a call to the SA Health Urgent Care Hub-Playford clinic, a new, dedicated out-of-hospital healthcare service, next door to the Lyell McEwin Hospital.
Part of the SA Health Urgent Care Hubs, these referral-only services provide various, rapid assessments and acute care for patients whose care needs are unable to be met by primary care providers and would otherwise need to visit an emergency department.
After spending up to 18 hours in departments in the past, Ohijenko was blown away by the speed and care she received at the Urgent Care Hub.
'I'm new to having experiences of bronchial asthma and after my first episode which took me to emergency, I was very scared,' she explains.
'I would have these coughing spasms and despite having the medications, they didn't seem to be working. The second time the ambulance came to my home – they were the ones who rang the new hub, which I found very fascinating.'
Just a week earlier in mid-March, Ohijenko had similar breathing problems and was taken to an emergency department. She says the experience at the hub was much smoother and more comfortable.
'I was very impressed with the whole area, the medical staff and how well they looked after me,' she says. 'It was very attentive and immediate. I didn't have to sit in a plastic chair and wait to see someone. As an older person that is very uncomfortable. The people were looking after me from the moment I entered the place and they had all my complete medical history in front of them and could look after me straight away.'
Located in Sefton Plaza, Woodville, Playford (Elizabeth) and Daw Park, the SA Health Urgent Care Hub multidisciplinary teams are made up of nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors, physiotherapists, pharmacists, social workers, podiatrists, occupational therapists and dietitians. It is a referral-only service, received from SA Ambulance Service, SA Virtual Care Service, general practitioners and community health care providers, while non-government organisations or consumers can even be redirected from emergency departments.
Ohijenko says these hubs take some of the strain off our emergency departments. 'For us older people, we have complex issues, so sometimes we don't have a choice but to make an emergency call,' she explains.
'I would 100 per cent use the services again. They did everything they could for me, from showing me how to use the medications properly to making recommendations to my local GP. They were great.'
Been there, lived that
Jess Rolevink speaks with authority about the crucial role peer support plays in helping people deal with their mental health challenges.
As the peer practice lead at the Northern Adelaide Medicare Mental Health Centre, she sees every day the impact empathy and understanding from people with lived experience has on those who may be struggling with issues such as extreme anxiety and depression.
And she only wishes the service – designed to help give people the care they need when they need it to keep them out of hospitals – existed when she was dealing with her own distress.
'During my teenage years and my twenties, I really struggled with anxiety and depression quite badly,' she says. 'It was so hard to get help. I was in and out of hospitals. 'That was it back then – there was no such thing as valuing lived experience. For me, my experience was one of isolation and of feeling judged. There was no one there that could say to me, 'you know what Jess, I get it. I absolutely get what you've been through and you're going to be OK'.
'I never experienced that and so this is why this role is so important. It just helps so much.' Rolevink works with a team of 25 peer support workers and a similar number of clinicians at the walk-in Elizabeth centre, described as 'a welcoming place for people to access mental health information, services and supports from qualified professionals over extended hours.'
Anyone can reach out for support for themselves, a loved one, friend, colleague or community contact. The service is free and no appointment, referral or Medicare card is needed. Similar centres are in Adelaide, Mount Barker, Mount Gambier and Port Pirie.
Northern Adelaide Medicare Mental Health Centre operations lead Rebecca Ljubic says all five centres are tailored to meet the needs of their local communities. 'When people experience a mental health crisis or distress they often turn to a hospital and emergency department and that's not always the best fit, given EDs are really tailored for physical health needs, and not so much mental health needs,' she says.
The service aims to – where appropriate – provide immediate support to reduce distress; provide in-house assessment, treatment and support; and connect people with the most appropriate ongoing support.
Ljubic says the focus is on providing a 'warm and welcoming' space, far removed from a cold, clinical setting.
'There's a lounge room environment for people, all the consulting rooms are very low stimulus, there's mood lighting,' she says. 'It's relaxed and comforting to help support people in a homelike, relaxing sort of environment.'
There has been growing local demand for the service.
'For our immediate access – the walk-in component of our service – we are currently seeing more than 300 people a month. And that's just stepping up and up and up each month.' Ljubic agrees the 'peer-first' lived experience component of the service helps provide a balanced and holistic care model.
'A lot of people come into the service feeling distressed, in crisis and hopeless but having that peer connection – having someone there who believes in them – helps them to regain some of that hope,' she says.
'Not everyone requires clinical intervention either. Some people might come in and they'll be able to talk with a peer and talk it through.
'Some may come in and might have some very serious things happening in their life where safety is concerned. That's where a clinician will become involved and provide some support around some of those more complex situations.'
Rolevink says hearing others talk about their own lived experience in a 'purposeful and authentic way' can have a powerful effect – and reflects again on the lack of post-hospital care during her own mental health journey.
'What I would have loved back then would have been a combination – someone with lived experience and someone with the clinical know-how to essentially walk alongside me. And that's what we do here.'

Electrolytes are having a moment in Australia – whether it's powders, ready-to-drink beverages or gummies – and it seems they're not just for athletes anymore. Walk into any supermarket, pharmacy, or gym, and you'll find hydration products promising to quench your thirst, boost your energy, and keep you focused. What was once a niche market for elite athletes has evolved into a trendy wellness phenomenon, with electrolytes now marketed as a daily staple to fitness and health-focused consumers. In 2022, the global demand for flavoured and functional water was valued at $50.3 billion (AUD $77.6 billion), a figure expected to nearly double by 2030. In Australia, the sports and energy drinks market, which includes electrolyte-enhanced beverages, is also booming. According to the IMARC Group, the market reached 133.5 million litres in 2024 and is projected to grow to 226.7 million litres by 2033, with an annual growth rate of 5.58 per cent. But what actually are electrolytes? And do we really need them as much as our favourite influencers espouse? What are electrolytes Electrolytes are essential substances that have a natural positive or negative electrical charge when dissolved in water. They help your body regulate chemical reactions, maintain the balance between fluids inside and outside your cells, regulate nerve and muscle function and help maintain proper pH in the blood. Your body gets electrolytes from the foods you consume, with sodium, for example, found in table salt, or potassium in bananas. You can notice if you're low in electrolytes, as the symptoms will be similar to dehydration, including muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, and nausea. You can lose electrolytes through excessive sweating, vomiting and diarrhoea. The benefits Dr Zac, a leading GP, explains that while water is essential for hydration, drinks with added electrolytes can be more effective at hydrating the body in certain contexts. 'Plain water is quickly absorbed and excreted, especially if you drink it on an empty stomach or when not dehydrated,' he tells 'But drinks with electrolytes – like oral rehydration solutions or sports drinks – help your body retain fluids longer. These electrolytes pull water into your cells and maintain a healthy balance in the blood, which can improve hydration efficiency.' He also emphasises the significance of osmolality, which refers to the concentration of particles, such as salts and sugars, in a solution. 'Drinks with slightly higher osmolality than blood plasma, such as oral rehydration solutions, stay in the body longer and hydrate more effectively,' he notes. For most people, however, water is enough for daily hydration. However, if you are sweating heavily or engaging in gruelling workouts, feeling unwell, or need to rehydrate efficiently, something with electrolytes and nutrients will 'outperform water' alone, he explained. The risks Despite their benefits, not everyone needs to supplement with electrolytes daily. Dr Zac points out, 'In most daily situations, water is enough'. Highly active people, those who sweat profusely, or people recovering from illness may benefit most from electrolyte replenishment. For the average person eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, nuts, leafy greens, and protein, and drinking plenty of water, additional electrolytes are likely unnecessary. There are also risks associated with overconsumption. Too much sodium, for example, can lead to high blood pressure in susceptible people. Excessive intake of certain electrolytes can also disrupt the body's delicate balance, leading to issues such as gastrointestinal upset, and impaired kidney function. As with any supplement, moderation is key. Choosing the right hydration product Mark Robinson, a sports dietitian for BSc, emphasises the importance of looking carefully at the ingredients of a hydration product, if you have identified yourself as someone who needs them. 'It's all about the total electrolyte count as well as the type of electrolytes', he says. 'You're looking for a combination of all five key sports minerals: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride. Sodium is the most important one for rehydration, since this is what is mostly lost in sweat, which can lead to dehydration. A 2:1 sodium-to-potassium ratio is optimal.' Mr Robinson also recommends opting for low-sugar choices. 'The added sports minerals are what make these drinks more beneficial than water, as they replenish salts lost typically in sweat', he explains. 'But you don't want to undo the benefits by consuming excessive sugar.' Aussies lead the trend This advice aligns with market trends, as consumers are increasingly seeking out natural ingredient-based, low-sugar products with added functional ingredients. Aussie entrepreneurs Austin Xenos and Madison Verrocchi, co-founders of LVL UP, identified a gap in the market for a clean-ingredient hydration product that catered to a broader audience, not just elite athletes. 'We decided to launch LVL UP in 2023 after noticing a clear gap in the market for a functional but fun product – something you'd actually look forward to drinking, whether you're at the gym or recovering from a night out', the pair told The rise of health-conscious consumers has dramatically reshaped the hydration market in Australia. 'People now read ingredient labels and are more aware of how hydration impacts energy, focus, and recovery', they added. 'This shift is pushing brands to innovate, offering cleaner formulas, natural flavours, and more transparency. Consumers aren't just buying sports drinks anymore. They're choosing functional hydration solutions for all parts of their lives'. It's true that electrolyte drinks can make you feel more energised and focused – but they don't provide instant energy like caffeine. Rather, they help support your body's energy use more efficiently, especially during exercise. There are still misconceptions about these sorts of products, though. 'One big misconception is that hydration products are only for athletes,' they say. 'In reality, we lose electrolytes every day through excessive sweat, stress, or even just a busy lifestyle. 'Another is that all hydration products are full of sugar or artificial additives, which isn't always the case.' The founders note that LVL UP contains just 3.5 grams of glucose per sachet, which helps with electrolyte absorption. The future of the industry Looking ahead, the co-founders predict that the future of the industry is about 'multifunctional hydration'. 'People want products that do more. Hydration that supports focus, energy, immunity, or recovery', say the duo. 'Clean labels, convenience, and flavour will continue to drive decisions.' The bigger picture So why the sudden focus on electrolytes? Aside from the increased interest in health as a whole, some experts have noted that electrolytes are gaining popularity as they're a small, easy addition to daily life that requires minimal effort. 'People feel like they're doing something good for themselves without it feeling too expensive or complicated, which can be an issue with some supplements,' one dietitian told The Guardian. And others compare the boom to the protein movement seen in 2016. 'Suddenly, people had a much greater awareness of the benefits of getting enough protein in their diet and realised that the benefits go beyond what sportspeople need,' Joe Welstead, founder of electrolyte retailer, Oshun, said. 'It's a similar story with electrolytes: if you can get past going for caffeine first thing in the morning and focus on being properly hydrated instead, you're going to feel so much better.' The takeaway? If you are already eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, and not sweating excessively, you can probably go about your life without worrying too much about extra electrolytes. But if you are sweating a lot – and, let's face it, you probably should be, at least occasionally – they are worth thinking about.

GPs will be able to diagnose and treat ADHD under Tasmanian Liberals' election pledge
Tasmanian Liberals have pledged to make it easier for Tasmanians to access attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis and treatment by allowing GPs to undertake assessments. On Saturday morning, Premier Jeremy Rockliff announced that if re-elected, the Liberals would expand Tasmanian GPs' scope of practice to enable them to diagnose, treat, and manage ADHD for both children and adults. Appearing alongside Mr Rockliff, Liberal Lyons candidate Steph Cameron, whose six-year-old son Bruce has ADHD, became emotional when discussing the challenges it had presented. Ms Cameron also has ADHD. "I look at kids who have ADHD … and often they're told that they're the naughty kids," she said. Currently, in Tasmania, it can be time-consuming and expensive to seek a diagnosis and treatment for ADHD. The wait for paediatric assessments can be 18 months or more. Last year, Tasmanian GP Kate Bendall told the ABC it could involve multiple medical practitioners and cost more than $800 to receive a diagnosis. When the state parliament last year held an inquiry into how ADHD is assessed and treated in Tasmania, it received 60 submissions, many of which raised the lack of available medical professionals. Mr Rockliff said the pledge would allow Tasmanian GPs to provide diagnosis and treatment options rather than referring adult and child patients to specialists. "We need to ensure we move with that need and ensure we have more flexibility and opportunity." He said the announcement would provide better, cheaper, and faster access for the families seeking help. The announcement comes just one day after the South Australian Labor government made a similar pledge. It also reflects changes that have been made in New South Wales and Queensland in recent years. The Tasmanian chair of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, Toby Gardner, said the peak body welcomed the announcement. "This is something we've been advocating for for a long time nationally," he said. Dr Gardner said the long wait times for children to be diagnosed could dramatically affect their educational outcomes. He said if adults were unable to access care and treatment, it could cost the national economy in lost productivity in the workplace. Ms Cameron, who has ADHD, said if she had been able to walk into a GP clinic and get the care her son needed, it would have been "life-changing". "To get the support [parents] need when they ask for it, without question or putting any doubt in their minds … it's so important," she said. Labor leader Dean Winter on Saturday also said his party supported the policy. Greens candidate for Bass, Cecily Rosol, said she was on the parliamentary inquiry into ADHD and supported the policy. "Having GPs being able to make an ADHD diagnosis is a sensible move that will improve diagnosis, reduce waiting times and ensure people are able to get the treatment and support they need," Ms Rosol said. Mr Rockliff said if his government was re-elected, it would also amend legislation to allow interstate prescriptions for ADHD medication to be dispensed in Tasmania.

Suicide prevention workshops in language try to help refugees, asylum seekers find mental wellness
Listen to Australian and world news, and follow trending topics with SBS News Podcasts. Nuha Abdul Razaq arrived in Australia from Iraq as a refugee in 2005. She says the topic of suicide is something many from the Arabic-speaking community find especially difficult to talk about. "It's a topic which they never talk about it in our country. When I was in Iraq or many people, I have clients from Syria, from different countries, from Lebanon or from Jordan, maybe we didn't talk it, we didn't talk about suicide in our countries. It's like, some people they feel it's shameful." She now delivers suicide prevention workshops in Arabic for refugees and asylum seekers. The workshops are part of a program launched by Wesley LifeForce which provides training in suicide prevention in six languages: Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Karen, Khmer and Tamil. It's co-designed with survivors of torture, trauma and forced displacement, paired up with the program by an organisation called Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors - STARTTS. Ms Abdul Razaq says the success of the training is in large part because it's delivered by people like herself who understand the challenges and stresses of displacement and resettlement. "To move to another country, it's not easy. Some people, they stay in camps for 10 years, 12 years, moving to other country, which is different languages, financial, most of them, they don't have any money to spend, even if they move to other country, if they want to find a job, it's struggling to get a job. And when you get settlement to Australia, another one, you have all (the) stress comes with you." Recent research shows refugees and asylum seekers in Australia experience disproportionately high rates of suicide. Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows between 2007–2020, humanitarian entrants to Australia were 1.7 times more likely to die by suicide compared to other permanent migrants. Bethany Farley, the National Training Manager at Wesley Lifeforce, says the broader figures around mental wellbeing for refugees and asylum seekers are also deeply concerning. "There's reports that show that over 50% do actually report that they have poor mental health with more than 25% experiencing PTSD. There are some other reports around thoughts of suicide, which for men can be as high as 10% and for women can be as high as 17%." Deputy CEO of STARTTS Lachlan Murdoch says the trauma of war and displacement presents complex psychological challenges for refugees and asylum seekers. "So being pushed out of your country in traumatic circumstances, exposure to conflict and war, being subjected to things like shelling and bombardment, in some cases being imprisoned and being held in circumstances of great deprivation. Experiences of torture. So all those things impact people in ways that affect their psyche. So refugees experience much higher levels of anxiety and depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal ideation." He says for asylums seekers, these experiences of trauma can be further complicated by fear of being returned to the country they have fled. "Asylum seekers are in a situation where they're living in protracted uncertainty. And so there's not clarity for them about whether the person will remain in a situation of relative safety or could be returned to circumstances of danger. So that experience of uncertainty also compounds the traumatic effects of exposure to violence and to conflict." Ms Farley says these challenges are exacerbated by a lack of access to culturally appropriate care for refugees and asylum seekers arriving in Australia. "Then you add the other challenges of a language barrier, not understanding how the processes work. And finding services that have translators or people that can actually understand the nuances of how their community and culture responds to different situations, to different processes. The mental health models themselves can be alienating in that they do not meet the needs of a multicultural community." The suicide prevention training delivered by community members like Ms Abdul Razaq aims to address some of these issues by facilitating workshops where participants can share experiences in their own language and learn from each other about the supports available. Ms Abdul Razaq says the stigma attached to speaking about suicide was initially a barrier for her. "And at the beginning I was stressed when I was trained for the first time and I hearing something, some information, but later I accepted that if that's happening in the community, we need all the community to know about it." After delivering the first training session, she says she was inspired by the openness of the participants, and their ability to move past any shame they might associate with talking about suicide. "Nine women attended and it was very good and I liked the way they talk about it. They open their mouth and talk about their stories as well. And it's to build comfortable space between us and to build the trust between us. When they want to talk, they will talk in a normal way."
